#651 -- The Two Sides of George Carln

Aug. 24, 2020, 1:56 p.m.
Comedian / satirist / critic George Carlin is in peak form in these satiric sketches from the 1990s--not previously broadcast on New World Notes. With sharp and strong satire he skewers much of American culture and politics. A gentler satiric style is included as well, in Carlin's comic discussion of the silly idioms (such as "down the tubes") we use in American speech. All (now) suitable for airplay. (Grumble!) With a little commentary, here and there, by KD.

Tom Suarez on How Terrorism Created Modern Israel (R)

Aug. 24, 2020, 11:08 a.m.
Tom Suarez has written an important book exploring the roots of Zionism, a history largely denied by mainstream Zionists because of its dependence on terrorism to advance its agenda against the Palestinian people. The book is meticulously documented from British military archives, but despite its authenticity, Suarez is attacked almost everywhere he speaks or tries to speak. The accepted Zionist history and narrative that is proclaimed today is largely based on myth that cannot be documented from historical archives, yet those who present the documented true story, like Tom Suarez, are pilloried and called anti-Semites. It is a dark story of deceit, terrorism and the exploitation of Jewish refugees and holocaust survivors. Our feature presentation today is Tom Suarez discussing his book, State of Terror: How Terrorism Created Modern Israel (2016), at the Palestine Cambridge Forum at the Argyle Street Coop in Cambridge, England. This book shows how the use of terror by supporters of the idea of a Jewish state in Palestine was systematic, routine, and accepted by Jewish leaders as necessary to achieve their aims. At the height of the British Mandate in Palestine, terrorist acts were carried out at a frequency and with an intensity that has been largely forgotten, even though daily newspaper headlines in the US, Britain, and Palestine spoke of bombings, assassinations, and massacres against Arabs and British civilians, as well as soldiers. Suarez tells this story using the terrorists' own accounts in secret internal papers boasting of their successes, and quoting from contemporary intelligence briefings and secret diplomatic correspondence. For more, visit palestinechronicle.com/terrorism-created-modern-israel-book-review/. This legacy show was originally aired on 5/28/2017.

True Story of Lebanon Crisis

Aug. 23, 2020, 9:26 p.m.
The Taylor Report interviews Zafar Bangash of Crescent International about the fallout from the explosion in Beirut, and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Israel. Concerning Beirut, Bangash notes that French President Macron paraded through the streets of the city like a viceroy issuing orders and demands to the Lebanese, while famously offering "no blank cheque" to aid the 300,000 homeless or 7,000 injured, whereas Syria, Iraq, and Iran immediately sent humanitarian aid with no strings attached. The demonstrators who hit the streets in Beirut were paid for by Hariri's Future Movement, who basically asked Macron to put Lebanon under trusteeship. On the other hand, Hezbollah, which has majority influence in Lebanon's parliament (but none at the Port of Beirut), called for a complete reset of Lebanese politics along the lines of one person, one vote. This in opposition to the current constitutional structure created by French colonialism, which guarantees systemic inequality and sectarianism. On the UAE, Bangash says that the Arab monarchies have been moving to normalize relations with Israel for some time, due to US pressure and to fear of the rising influence of Iran in the region. The UAE move may have helped Trump and Netenyahu's electoral chances but only serves to further isolate the monarchical regimes from the people over whom they dictatorially rule.

Big Questions About Your Future (replay)

Aug. 23, 2020, 7:37 p.m.
This week we catch up with extreme heat coming to American cities " it will be literally off-the-charts. Dr. Kristina Dahl from the Union of Concerned Scientists reports. Then we check in with Canadian climate scientist Simon Donner on a wide range of big questions about your future. My thoughts go out to the millions of people in California worried or on the run as hurricane winds drove super fires across the landscape. A weakened jet stream allowed a polar blast to sweep over North America. Some of those winds flowed back over the desert toward the Pacific Coast to become a rare hurricane-level Santa Anna. Images from the fire-fight look like Hell to me. Stay safe friends. Recorded November 6, 2019 but sounds like today!

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 188 The Campaign Begins

Aug. 19, 2020, 10 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Dame Shirley & Kate Magruder - Women and the Gold Rush Part 2

Aug. 19, 2020, 6:35 p.m.
When word that California had gold in its creeks and streams reached the United States of America in 1848, fortune seekers from all over the world soon began to arrive in California by boat, covered wagon, and on foot. Some people made their fortunes by selling provisions or services and very few actually found enough gold to take home. Louise Smith Clapp of Amherst, Massachusetts, using the name of Dame Shirley, wrote detailed and vivid descriptions of the life and ways of the gold seekers and of mid 19th century California. In this two-part program, we will talk to Dame Shirley in the person of Kate Magruder, a Chautauqua performer and participant with the California Council for the Humanities Sesquicentennial Project, Rediscovering California at 150. 1 Dame Shirley recommends The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Kate Magruder recommends “Days of Gold,” by Malcolm Rhorbough & “The Shirley Letters,” by Dame Shirley. Originally Broadcast: March 16, 1999 & March 23, 1999
