#638 -- Potpourri 8

May 25, 2020, 1:53 p.m.
A bouquet of this and that, not random but loosely structured. Features a fine talk by Mumia Abu-Jamal, two classic satires by The Firesign Theater, and commentary by KD. The commentary focuses on corruption of language as a tool of the powerful, the sea of propaganda in which we swim, the historical uses of potpourri, the sad similarities of 17th and (U.S.) 21st century responses to pandemics, and the meaning of "Ring Around the Rosie." And yes, the topics are all related.

Deportation Contagions in the Age of COVID-19

May 23, 2020, 5:28 p.m.
Deportation Contagions: How the Age of COVID-19, Anything Other than Ending Deportations is Disastrous. with Jorge Cullar professor of Latin American, Latino & Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College reporting from San Salvador Deportations, have been shown to put people in situations of danger and existential risk. Deportees leaving U.S. detention for their home countries face significant challenges as they return to the contexts that prompted their outmigration"of course, after their now required quarantine, their multiple temperature checks, their lasting stigmatization. Now, with COVID-19 affecting Central American countries and expected to worsen, there exists an immediate viral risk associated with return, to both deportees themselves and to Central American societies as they haphazardly maneuver through the developing pandemic.

May 22, 2020, 7:14 a.m.

We look at how the South Africa Revenue Service was established in very challenging times to become a world class institution. Yet also how quickly such achievements can be set back… Also, as all eyes turn to Central Banks during this coronavirus pandemic, we ask who are they serving? And how do people forge a new relationship and a new role for them that fits modern times? We look at the profound implications of a little-known court ruling this month in Karlsruhe by the German Constitutional Court concerning the actions of the European Central Bank – the second-most important central bank in the world

Herman's Radio & Record Room #4

May 21, 2020, 3:59 a.m.
My father Herman Frederick Moe was a radio repairman, country & western cowboy singer, and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him. My father was a radio engineer and electrician; yet he loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music & radio shows from mid century America. This is music I believe he would have enjoyed.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 175 O Death

May 20, 2020, 11:11 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 11 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Sonic Cafe #188/George Carlin Grumpy Old Man

May 20, 2020, 1:50 p.m.
Sonic Café, hey welcome, glad you could drop by the café. I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 188. This time the Sonic Café remembers a man who was revered as a comedian, but in truth, was more of a scholar, and probably one of the greatest cultural observers of our time. We’re talking about George Carlin. George has been gone now for over a decade, but his observations seem more relevant today than ever before. We’ll feature a series of clips captured from his final, grumpy old man years. A time when no body was safe from his razor sharp wit, especially if your name happened to be Todd. Carlin’s comments about our culture are wrapped in a music mix pulled from 36 years. We’ll hear from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bloodrock, the Talking Heads, Jonny Lang, Off Broadway and many, many more. All straight ahead this time as the Sonic Café presents George Carlin, the grumpy old man, from that little café on the coast in the amazing Pacific Northwest, we’re the Sonic Café.
