Pio Pico & Roberto Garza - Meet the Last Mexican Governor of California

April 28, 2020, 11:25 p.m.
In this program, we are going to go back into California history about 150 years, and visit with the last Mexican governor of California, Pio Pico. Pio Pico was born at the San Gabriel Mission in 1801, of Spanish, Italian, Indian and African ancestry. Both as a politician and as an entrepreneur, he espoused the views of many native-born Californarios over distant seats of government. As the last Mexican governor of California, he presided over the secularization of the missions, and turned over their vast land holdings to private hands. Although he fled California during the American takeover, Pio Pico returned to build the first major hotel in Los Angeles. Later, he served on the Los Angeles City Council. I met with Pio Pico in the person of Roberto Garza in February of 1998. Pio Pico recommends “Pio Pico, A Historical Narrative,” by Pio Pico. Roberto Graza recommends “Pio Pico Miscellany,” by Martin Cole & “Decline of the Californios,” by Leonard Pitt. Originally Broadcast: February 27, 1998

Trump and Biden promoting division and havoc

April 28, 2020, 8:29 p.m.
The World Health Organization is under attack by the United States because the US is losing its control over the world. Canada should not be associated with these attacks. We should instead be promoting mutual respect, peace, and cooperation between major states. On China, Biden is as bad as Trump. In Canada, the media has been baiting China, showing that we are a vassal state following the Americans.

Marie Mutskui Mockett: American Harvest

April 28, 2020, 3:12 p.m.
Anyone who has gone to the grocery store during the COVID-19 health crisis must have wondered to themselves at some point why there was no toilet paper, milk or flour all of a sudden. It’s an important reminder that most of us have very little idea how things go from being planted in the ground to being stocked on our shelves. On this week’s Sea Change Radio, we speak with Marie Mutsuki Mockett, an author whose family owns a wheat farm in Nebraska. Her new book, “American Harvest,” takes us inside the world of wheat harvesting. We get a glimpse into the lives of the farmers she met while researching her book, discuss how those in the industry are coping with the pandemic and take a closer look at some of the agricultural industry's practices.

David Quammen: Is the Coronavirus the Byproduct of Human Behavior?

April 28, 2020, 1:28 p.m.
In his seventh week of sheltering in place in Milano, Italy, the filmmaker Olmo Parenti called the science writer and explorer David Quammen. He was sheltering in his home in Bozeman, Montana. Olmo had read Quammen’s 2012 book: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic; and asked Quammen how he was able to predict 8 years ago the rise of the Coronavirus pandemic. Olmo Parenti is a member of “A THING BY” a collective of young filmmakers based in Milan. David Quammen has won many awards for his books and magazine articles, including from the National Association of Science Writers. His work with National Geographic is best known, and has taken him on many difficult treks through the wild, such as chronicling J. Michael Fay’s 2,000 mile survey hike through the forests of Central Africa, The Megatransect. In the course of his travels and studies David Quammen has come in contact with emerging diseases — such as Ebola, SARS, bird flu, and AIDS — and with the wildlife they emerge from. Spillover, the rite of his book, is a scientific term, it is the moment when such a virus passes from wild animals into people.

Poultry Industry is Killing Essential Workers

April 25, 2020, 9:34 a.m.
How the Poultry Industrys Delayed COVID-19 Response Is Killing Americas Essential Workers with Edgar Fields, former professional football defensive tackle who played for the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions and now having committed his life to worker organizing in the deep south is Southeast Council President of the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which represents 100,000 members throughout the United States. Elose Willis served as Secretary of Local 938, representing poultry workers at Tyson in Camilla, Georgia. She was a proud and committed member of the RWDSU and worked at the facility for 35 years. She passed away due to COVID-19 on April 1, 2020. Mary Holt was a member of Local 938 of the RWDSU Southeast Council and worked the poultry line at the Camilla, Georgia Tyson plant for 27 years. She was a member of the RWDSU Southeast Council. She passed away April 6 from COVID-19 complications. Annie Grant was a member of Local 938 of the RWDSU Southeast Council. For 13 years, Ms. Grant worked at the Tyson plant in Camilla, Georgia. She passed on April 7 due to the coronavirus. Grant worked tirelessly at Tysons poultry plant in Camilla, to provide a future for her children. Annie Grant, 55, had been feverish for two nights. Worried about the coronavirus outbreak, her adult children had begged her to stay home rather than return to the frigid poultry plant in Georgia where she had been on the packing line for nearly 15 years. But on the third day she was ill, they got a text from their mother. They told me I had to come back to work, it said. Ms. Grant ended up returning home, and died in a hospital after fighting for her life on a ventilator for more than a week. Two other workers at the Tyson Foods poultry plant where she worked in Camilla, Ga., have also died in recent days. My mom said the guy at the plant said they had to work to feed America. But my mom was sick, said one of Ms. Grants sons, Willie Martin, 34, a teacher in South Carolina. He said he watched on his phone as his mother took her last breath. At the Tyson facility in Camilla, Georgia, where the RWDSU represents 2,000 members, three members have died from the virus and many are sick or in quarantine. Tyson employs a largely Black workforce that commutes from Albany, Georgia and surrounding cities to the facility daily. Workers debone chickens elbow to elbow with no access to masks. They work at speeds of upwards of 80 chickens per minute, while upper management, largely white and clad in protective gear, oversees production. *****************************
