The Kashmir crisis can be resolved by referendum

Jan. 12, 2020, 7:57 p.m.
Phil interviews Michaela Lavis, a graduate student at York University, following the publication of her OP-ED piece in the Toronto Star entitled, "My Christmas in Kashmir's Refugee Camps." Lavis explains that she visited 4 camps in Azad Kashmir (in Pakistan), which have housed some 40,000 refugees fleeing persecution in Indian-Occupied Kashmir since 1990. These are people whose family members were assaulted or arrested by Indian occupation troops or whose houses were burnt down. In these camps, the occupants have not heard a word from their families in Indian-Occupied Kashmir for six months since the Indian government unilaterally locked down Kashmir and annexed the territory. The problem, Lavis notes, began in 1947 during the British partition of India.

#619 -- Economics and Inequality, Part 1 (R)

Jan. 12, 2020, 2:57 p.m.
Economist Joseph Stiglitz shows that economic inequality in the US is bad, and it is getting worse. The causes are our dysfunctional style of capitalism and a political system that increasingly serves only the economic elite, not "the 99%." Our economic inequality is bad for democracy, bad for the U.S. economy, even bad for capitalism, Stiglitz argues. Stiglitz's talk is short on solutions, but it is an excellent, lucid, and very listenable survey of the problems we face--and their causes.

Nate Hagens: The Collision

Jan. 12, 2020, 2:38 p.m.
Is climate change just a symptom? Dr. Nate Hagens says we need a change of cultural purpose, away from money - but that can't happen until we pass through a financial "recalibration" and emergency. Humans need to stimulate our primitive brains without wrecking the planet. The author of "Reality 101", Hagens has the big picture diagnosis and a start on the cure.

Criminalizing Dissent: UMassAmherst Autumn Conference (part 3 of 3): Shaun King and panel discussion

Jan. 12, 2020, 8:47 a.m.
Today we finish our coverage of the November 12, 2019 Criminalizing Dissent Conference held at Umass Amherst. This was an enormously important conference, held despite the fact that the Zionist lobby as well as University officials tried to stop it from even happening. They were not successful, and with the help of a court order, the conference proceeded. The auditorium was packed, as was a similar conference held in the Spring of 2019, and as you will hear, this one was also challenged by audience hecklers, who were were expertly handled by the panelists. This was an important moment in the conference and we have not edited it out. This morning you will first hear the presentation of organizer Shaun King, and then the closing panel discussion with all the participants whose speeches were presented in our two preceding broadcasts. The panel consisted of Linda Sarsour, Tim Wise, Cornel West, Dimi Khalidi, and Shaun King.

CIA War Powers Resolution Allows War

Jan. 11, 2020, 2:02 p.m.
“You have to understand Slotkin is CIA. This is, sort of, the CIA’s War Powers Resolution backed up by Pelosi and the rest of the hardcore Democrats. Slotkin served as a CIA analyst and as a Department of Defense official. The resolution it’s riddled with so many holes that it really doesn’t restrain Trump from doing anything. However another resolution was just unveiled by Ro Khanna and supported by Berrnie Sanders. Having read through it, in Boyles opinion this resolution is fully consistent with the War Powers Clause of the constitution, the War Powers Resolution of 1973, and the UN Charter. This resolution stands a chance to actually limit the Presidents War Power and bring the decision of declaring war back to the Congress where it belongs according to the constitution.

Also great blues from the David Bromberg Band and Fast Eddie Clarke, plus Chaz Jankel with the story of Johnny Funk, then M83, Everlast, Hall & Oates and more in an eclectic mix spanning 45 years. Oh and a big Sonic Café welcome to our newest sponsor. If you’re eager to sharpen your math skills, make sure to listen for a word from The Joe Johnson Math Learning System. Donald Drumpf Theatre Vol. 156 War?

Jan. 8, 2020, 8:22 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 10 episodes, but with impeachment cancellation is possible at any moment. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.
