Nurses Blast Government And Hospital Readiness For Coronavirus

March 27, 2020, 6:03 p.m.
Nurses Blast Government And Hospital Readiness For Coronavirus with Deborah Burger, practicing nurse and co-president of National Nurses United and president o the California Nurses Association (CAN). CNA now represents over 57,000 nurses in 164 facilities across California. With CNA, California nurses have led the nation in ground-breaking patient advocacy legislation such as staffing ratios and whistle-blower protections. In the midst of Covid-19, the union National Nurses United surveyed its members and found they were lacking the equipment, training and clear guidelines they need right now. The nurses fighting the spread of coronavirus in response to the survey have unleashed a flood of criticism on the federal government and their employers, saying they have been left poorly equipped to care for their patients and protect themselves amid the outbreak. Members of the union said they have faced shifting guidelines and a shortage of supplies as the tally of known infections has increased. They called on the Centers for Disease Control to quickly increase testing for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and demanded that federal officials implement emergency standards for hospitals and clinics around the country. The CDC has been behind the ball at almost every step of the way, said Jane Thomason, an industrial hygienist for the union

In a second segment, Phil talks about Tulsi Gabbard, the Democrat member of the US Congress who condemns regime change wars, calls for immediate withdrawal of American troops from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan; lifting of sanctions on Iran; and supports Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. Sonic Cafe #180/Good Times at the Craft Store

March 26, 2020, 10:05 a.m.
Sonic Café. That’s the late, great Joe Cocker from 1972. Hey welcome, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 180. This time the Sonic Café presents a music mix pulled from 51 years. Listen for a very rare Steely Dan recording captured at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1974. It’s famous for the, shall we say inebriated, band introduction from Jerome Aniton, who was the bands truck driver back in the day. We think it’s one of the best intros of all time, and hope you agree. Then listen for classic jazz from Andrew Hill, also great blues from my cousin Fast Eddie Clarke, ahh he’s not really my cousin, but what the heck, and of course many more. Then later the Sonic Café checks in with comedian Jamie Lissow who’s hanging out at your local craft store… should be a good time… and finally a huge Sonic Café welcome to our latest sponsor, new Soothe Cough Medicine, featuring the patented cough killing concoction of codine, morphine and alcohol. Take Soothe and you’ll soon forget you ever had a cough, your name ahh and where to properly go to the bathroom. All that and of more this time from that little café on the big, blue Pacific coast. We’re the Sonic Café.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 167 Afraid of Everyone

March 25, 2020, 9:53 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 11 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Jane Dymond - A Juror Speaks

March 25, 2020, 8:33 p.m.
The Eugene “Bear” Lincoln murder trial ended in the fall of 1997 in Ukiah, California, with an acquittal of the defendant, Mr. Lincoln, on charges of first degree and second-degree murder, and with the jury divided ten to two, on acquittal from manslaughter charges. Apart from the divisive nature of this criminal trial, it also carried a particularly extraordinary aspect. Seven of the twelve jurors chose to come forward and talk about their responses to what they heard and saw in the courtroom. Jane Dymond was a member of the Lincoln trial jury. She attended every session of the trial, and every aspect of the jury’s deliberation. She is our guest in this edition of Radio Curious. Jane Dymond recommends “Independent People,” by Haldor Locksmith. Originally Broadcast: October 10, 1997

Dr. John Campbell: Corona Virus Update

March 24, 2020, 8:43 p.m.
On March 23rd, 2020, as global confirmed Corona cases top 400,000, Donald Trump stresses the need to Reopen America and ease up on stay at home orders - at the same time India announces a 21-day lockdown across the country; and UK prime minister Boris Johnson - after weeks of inaction - announces a strict lockdown all across England. Just before this news became public Dr. John Campbell, in his daily updates on his YouTube channel, explained how important the stay at home orders are. Dr. Campbell is a retired Nurse Teacher based in England The second commentary by Dr. Campbell deals with treatment of fever. Since fever has become the most important first line diagnostic indicator of a Covid 19 infection it may be frightening for anybody to discover that we are running a temperature. Many might react by searching for a pharmaceutical to bring the fever down. Dr. Campbell says that that could be the wrong thing to do. He comments on specific advice given by the French Minister of Health Olivier Veran. Veran warns that some anti-inflammatory drugs may worsen the Corona infection. Campbell says that fever is generally a protective mechanism that helps combat the infection. He agrees with Veran with one reservation. His advice on fever is presented here to listeners to get advice from doctors or nurses to know what’s best for us when we experience fever. Self administering drugs - many of which are available over the counter - can be the wrong thing to do. I want to credit Dr. Campbell’s daily friendly and learned and low-tech commentaries and advice on the corona epidemic on his YouTube channel CampbellTeaching. For a quarter century Campbell has taught nurses, lay people and health care workers in Asia and Africa. In 2007 he expanded to YouTube with his personal and casual approach and home made slides and time tested wisdom and ongoing research. He currently posts at CampbellTeaching on the spread of the Corona virus.

Matt Haney: COVID Contingencies

March 24, 2020, 2:40 p.m.
Over the years, we’ve learned from countless sustainability experts that in the climate change fight it makes sense for humans to live more densely and efficiently. Now, however, in the midst of a global pandemic, we recognize that density may have other ramifications. This week on Sea Change Radio, we dive into the Covid-19 planning policy weeds with San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney. Haney has been an outspoken advocate for more equity in this city now famous for its extreme wealth divide, so the impact of this crisis and the shelter-in-place order on those living on the margins is of particular interest to him. We discuss his work with local hotels to shelter people experiencing homelessness, the struggle to develop smart policy responses to a situation in constant flux, and what can be done to protect seniors, small, local businesses, and gig-economy workers.

Last show until our radio station resumes broadcast: three important pieces

March 24, 2020, 7:50 a.m.
This Week In Palestine is produced at WZBC-FM, a student operated radio station at Boston College. Due to the pandemic, Boston College students have been sent home and will not return until Autumn 2020. Therefore, programming has been suspended at WZBC for the immediate future. We welcome you to access our permanent archive at truthandjusticeradio.org: click on “This Week in Palestine Archive.” You’ll find our past broadcasts all the way back to 1-6-2008. Here are the three pieces we have squeezed into today's edition: 1. Devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Palestinians, especially those in refugee camps; what is required but not available; the community's heroic efforts to mitigate. We read portions of a communiqué from our friend in Bethlehem, Abed Abusroar, who directs the Al Rowwad Cultural Center in the Aida Refugee Camp. 2. Daunting mental health challenges to an imprisoned people held under military siege, especially those in Gaza. This mental health crisis is the subject of our feature presentation today. Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei, director of the Gaza Mental Health Center, talks to Steven Sacker in a podcast called Hard Talk that was recorded in London, England. 3. Will humanity fail or rise to the challenge? A comprehensive analysis of our plight. Before we sign off, there is one more Palestinian voice we need to hear. Mazin Qumsiyeh, founder and director of the natural history Museum at Bethlehem University, longtime friend, and activist extraordinare, has written this analysis, which we share in full. Thank you for listening! In our absence, you can go to imemc.org for good current reporting from Palestine (but not audio) while we are off.
