#623 -- Corporate Plunder & Popular Revolt, Part 1
Feb. 9, 2020, 5:42 p.m.
Journalist CHRIS HEDGES traces the rise of the Corporate State, the destruction of democracy, and the corporate plunder of society. And (in Part 2) he surveys successful examples of nonviolent popular rebellion.
This week he discusses how corporations subverted democracy in the US since 1914. And he takes us to some of America's "sacrifice zones"--areas devastated by unrestrained corporate plunder. (Continued under "Credits"...)
Walter Hixson on the history of the powerful Israeli Lobby
Feb. 9, 2020, 5:41 p.m.
The power of the Israeli lobby is manifesting itself all through American society today. It certainly has been felt locally, as Cambridge and Somerville experienced when activist groups tried diligently for months to get Israel-boycott legislation and resolutions through their City Councils only to witness a last minute blitzkrieg by the well-financed Israeli lobby that faced down both city councils. We also see the power of the Lobby in systematically flooding state legislatures all across the country, including Massachusetts, with unconstitutional anti-BDS legislation. (BDS = Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions.) And of course we see the power of the Lobby almost daily on college campuses as pro-Palestinian programs and speakers are censored and professors attacked. We need not look further than attempts by the Lobby to pressure Tufts to terminate Professor Tom Abowd.
So this week we feature Professor Walter Hixson of Akron University, who has studied the Israeli Lobby for years, speaking in Washington DC.
Hixson's most recent book is "Israel's Armor: The Israel Lobby and the First Generation of the Palestine Conflict" (2019). From Amazon's description: "A critical component of the special relationship is the pro-Israel lobby. Although the lobby has been a controversial topic in public affairs, it has been widely understudied. Israel's Armor fills a gap in the existing literature by examining the origins and early history of the Israel lobby, looking at its influence on American foreign policy, and weaving its activities into the diplomatic history of the first generation of the Palestine conflict. ..."

The Media War Against Cuba
Feb. 7, 2020, 4:27 p.m.
When it comes to socialist Cuba, our "liberal" media discards all pretence to fair and balanced reporting. Keith Bolender, who worked as a reporter and taught journalism, explains that the mainstream media is owned by a handful of monopolies with close links to our ruling political parties.
Keith details the half-truths and outright lies that so-called "reputable" media have used to demonize Cuba, a country that had the temerity to overthrow an American puppet and to become a sovereign socialist country admired around the world.

Mostly I focus on proper names, especially place- and personal names. This discipline is called onomastics. My place-name work is mainly about finding out the origin of English place-names created before about 1500 A.D., but frankly any place-name of any period can be interesting if you look at it in the right way.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 160 Here Comes The Sun King
Feb. 5, 2020, 11:20 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 10 episodes, but with impeachment cancellation is possible at any moment. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.
Black athletes and conquering racism
Feb. 5, 2020, 8:44 p.m.
Patrick Mahomes is as good a quarterback as any who played in the NFL, and so is Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. But due to racism/segregation of modern American history they do not have enough years in the game to be included in the official list of Ten Greatest NFL Quarterbacks, all of whom are white.
Sports fans have for years been robbed of the "best," and black athletes have been denied. A study of this phenomenon will tell much of what needs to be known about Black history---and the need for Black History Month.
