Chicago Protests Continue - Torture and Human Rights Abuse Still At Homan Square

Aug. 6, 2020, 8:22 p.m.
Speakers represent Let Us Breath Collective, Black Abolitionist Network and Chicago Torture Justice Center. Five years earlier the Let Us Breath Collective and Black Lives Matter setup a tent community in an empty lot across from the Chicago Police Department warehouse at Homan and Fillmore after hearing reports of children and adults be held off the books by police. Prisoners were hidden from their lawyers and family, denied access to lawyers and a phone and as you will hear bathrooms. Former Mayor Rahm Emanuel and current Mayor Lightfoot have refused to close the facility or enforce the laws requiring that prisoners be registered and allowed access to a lawyer. Called a "black site" in a Guardian Newspaper expose, local lawyers disputed that claim. Nothing that transpired at Homan was any different than what happens at any other police station in Chicago they claimed. Speakers are calling for de-funding the police. The #3 demand in the BAN list of demands is for the City Council to pass the Civilian Police Accountability Council Ordnance, CPAC. The protest took place ahead of Trumps threat to bring Federal Goons into Chicago to stop the on going protests that followed George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police. This black lead movement intends to end police impunity and the racist policing that accompanies it. They were not intimidated and were joined at the rally by many white and Latinx supporters who later marched through the neighborhood.. Damon's talk starts late and the last speaker an Alderman was not recorded. A cultural program followed that demonstrated how its the community that provides actual safety.

Aug. 6, 2020, 8:03 a.m.
Sonic Café No Sympathy, that’s music from Flash Lightnin’… so hey welcome, I’m Scott Clark and this is another must listen moment in the history of the Sonic Café. This is episode 199, nearly four years of the Sonic Café! Wow, when we opened the café we never imagined we’d get here, but because of you, and the support of community radio stations across America, here we are. So a big Sonic Café thank you to everyone who has stopped by our little radio café over the years. To celebrate, the Sonic Café spins up a music mix from 45 years. Listen for Led Zeppelin, Dave Matthews, The Cure, T. Rex, Colosseum, plus a really rare cut of CSNY performing Long Time Gone, from a 1969 TV broadcast, featuring Tom Jones on lead vocals. It’s really quite cool. Then the Sonic Café checks in with comedian Mike Siegel, who as an older single guy, gives a glimpse into his exciting life. And finally get out your check book and give a giant size Sonic Café welcome to some nice folks who help impoverished people everywhere with only 39 cents or ahh so a day. All that and more as the Sonic Café celebrates our 199th episode, here at that little café in the Pacific Northwest, we’re the Sonic Café.

Dame Shirley & Kate Magruder - Women and the Gold Rush

Aug. 5, 2020, 11:07 p.m.
When word that California had gold in its creeks and streams reached the United States of America in 1848, fortune seekers from all over the world soon began to arrive in California by boat, covered wagon, and on foot. Some people made their fortunes by selling provisions or services and very few actually found enough gold to take home. Louise Smith Clapp of Amherst, Massachusetts, using the name of Dame Shirley, wrote detailed and vivid descriptions of the life and ways of the gold seekers and of mid 19th century California. In this two-part program, we will talk to Dame Shirley in the person of Kate Magruder, a Chautauqua performer and participant with the California Council for the Humanities Sesquicentennial Project, Rediscovering California at 150. 1 Dame Shirley recommends The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Kate Magruder recommends “Days of Gold,” by Malcolm Rhorbough & “The Shirley Letters,” by Dame Shirley. Originally Broadcast: March 16, 1999 & March 23, 1999

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 186 Delay The Election

Aug. 5, 2020, 9:58 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Labour and Politics: CLC in Limbo

Aug. 5, 2020, 8:52 p.m.
Phil interviews Tony Leah about the situation of Canadian labour. Leah lucidly describes the lack of leadership in the CLC under Hassan Yussuf, who has enjoyed a term extension as a result of COVID-19. Yussuf is not entitled to the CLC presidency, as his union left the Congress, and has engaged in raiding. UNIFOR, and by extension Yussuf, are following the political line of cozying up to the Liberal Party. In contrast to the capitulationist politics discussed here, Taylor and Leah bring up the political activity of Dimitri Lascaris and Sid Ryan. These individuals are talking about matters that are outside the borders of Canada, such as alliances between workers, and respect for international law. Ryan and Lascaris have supported the Green Jobs Oshawa campaign to nationalize GM in order to produce green vehicles. And there are other progressive policies, as well. We need leaders who are comfortable with words like "democratic planning," "confrontation" and "nationalization." The tragedy of COVID-19 has shown the ineptitude of the U.S. system, and the compassion of the socialist countries. Lascaris has stood up for Venezuela, which distinguishes him from the approach of most Canadian politicians.

Laura Briggs, Author of Taking Children, A History of American Terror; Vietnam Vet Mike Hastie, the Wall of Vets, Standing Up Against Trump in Portland

Aug. 4, 2020, 9:43 p.m.
Laura Briggs, Taking Children. For 400 years the United States has taken children for political ends. Black children, Native children, Latinx children, and the children of the poor. In chilling detail we see how Central Americans were made into a population that could be stripped of their children who would be put in Trumps concentration camps. Mike Hastie joined the protests in Portland, Oregon as part of the Wall of Vets. He was pepper-sprayed in the face by Trump's storm troopers.

"Vertical Farmers Never Have To Pray For Rain"

Aug. 4, 2020, 2:31 p.m.
Nine years ago on Sea Change Radio, we spoke to the self-proclaimed founding father of vertical farming, Dickson Despommier, about the concept of moving crops onwards and upwards (literally). In an interesting twist, the global COVID pandemic has resulted in a lot of abandoned office buildings. To proponents of vertical farming, these spaces may represent unprecedented opportunity. We thought this seemed like a good time to revisit our original Sea Change Radio interview with Dr. Despommier, unedited, in its entirety. In fact, Dr. Despommier co-authored a paper just last week for the Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) titled "Wheat Yield Potential in Controlled-environment vertical farms." In the paper, the authors write that "although it is unlikely that indoor wheat farming will be economically competitive with current market prices in the near future, it could play an essential role in hedging against future climate or other unexpected disruptions to the food system." Now, let's go back to our interview from November 2011.

Paul Grignon: Money as Debt (TWO of TWO) Best of TUC

Aug. 4, 2020, 12:15 p.m.
This update of TUC Radio’s 2009 Film on Radio version opens up concepts for groundbreaking bank reform and explains three astounding quotes by American presidents: “All of the perplexities, confusion, and distress in America arises, not from the defects of the Constitution or Confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, so much as from downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit, and circulation.”
John Adams, Founding Father of the American Constitution “Whoever controls the volume of money in our country is absolute master of all industry and commerce … and when you realize that the entire system is very easily controlled, one way or another, by a few powerful men at the top, you will not have to be told how periods of inflation and depression originate.”
James A. Garfield, assassinated president of the United States “The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credits needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers. By the adoption of these principles, the taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest. The privilege of creating and issuing money is not only the supreme prerogative of government, but it is the government’s greatest creative opportunity.”
Abraham Lincoln, assassinated president of the United States With over 2 million downloads between 2006 and 2009 and translated into 20 languages, the film has remained to this date one of the extraordinary teaching tools and inspiration for the monetary reform movement.
