Black athletes and conquering racism

Feb. 5, 2020, 8:44 p.m.
Patrick Mahomes is as good a quarterback as any who played in the NFL, and so is Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. But due to racism/segregation of modern American history they do not have enough years in the game to be included in the official list of Ten Greatest NFL Quarterbacks, all of whom are white. Sports fans have for years been robbed of the "best," and black athletes have been denied. A study of this phenomenon will tell much of what needs to be known about Black history---and the need for Black History Month.

Bob Blincoe - "The Kurdish People"

Feb. 4, 2020, 6:31 p.m.
The word millet is a term from the Ottoman Empire that ruled parts of Europe Central to the Near East from 1430 to 1921 and means “a recognized people or cultural group who have no homeland.” Millet now applies to the Kurdish people, who live in the Zagros Mountains, where the borders of eastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and northwestern Iran converge. Starting with Gulf War of 1991, 25 million Kurdish people live homeless and stateless in the Zagros Mountains. They are subject to frequent attacks from the Turks and the Iraqis. Bob Blincoe, a Presbyterian minister, lived and worked as a community organizer among the Kurds in the Zagros Mountains for five and one-half years until the Fall of 1996. At first he spoke Arabic, so he wouldn’t stand out as someone working with a suspect minority. He quickly learned Kurdish and has many interesting stories to share. Bob Blincoe recommends “A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern World,” by David Fromkin. Originally Broadcast: May 14, 1997

Shoshana Zuboff: Surveillance Capitalism and Democracy, Part TWO of TWO

Feb. 4, 2020, 10:13 a.m.
Shoshana Zuboff is the author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. She reveals a world in which technology users are the raw material for new procedures of manufacturing and sales that define an entirely new economic order: a surveillance economy. Some now claim that Facebook and Cambridge Analytica played a larger role in Donald Trump’s election victory than Russia. In this part of her talk Zuboff describes how human behavior is not just observed but influenced to make a particular consumer or political choice. Zuboff is the author of three books. “In the Age of the Smart Machine: The Future of Work and Power” foresaw how computers would revolutionize the modern workplace. Her influential “The Support Economy: Why Corporations Are Failing Individuals…” predicted the rise of digitally-mediated products and services tailored to the individual. Now her masterwork, “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power” reveals a world in which technology users are the raw material for new procedures of manufacturing and sales that define an entirely new economic order: a surveillance economy. Shoshana Zuboff is Professor Emerita at Harvard Business School. She spoke in Berlin, on November 6, 2019,at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.

Feb. 2, 2020, 1:37 p.m.
Illusion vs. reality in America today. Getting lost on Groundhog Day inspires a reflection by K.D. on S.I. Hayakawa's maxim, "The map is not the territory." The "map" of reality handed to us by the corporations and politicians falsely depicts the lay of the land (so to speak). Plus--making similar points--a selection from a Virtual Renderings audio collage. Includes commentary by Woody Harrelson, Chris Hedges, and Jordan Maxwell and a timely song by Jackson Browne.
