This weekâs guest on Sea Change Radio believes US currency now rests unofficially on the price of oil. What will a successful Green New Deal will look like if the underlying currency upon which the US economy rests is based on fossil fuels? We speak to James Quilligan, the Managing Director of Economic Democracy Advocates and longtime policy analyst in the international development space. Quilligan explains the history of the commons and monetary policy, points out some of the shortcomings of capitalism, and lays out how to ensure the survival of democracy. Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen: Into Eternity ONE of TWO
Oct. 1, 2019, 8:28 p.m.
This is a conversation between Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen whose film, Into Eternity, premiered in the US in February 2011. Into Eternity is a documentary about the building of the world's first permanent repository for nuclear waste in Finland. It shows not only the construction under way that will take 140 years, but introduces the people involved, the scientists, regulators and corporate executives who oversee this project. None of them will be alive when Onkalo, as the repository is called, will be finished in 2120; and they must expect this repository to remain intact and untouched by future humans for at least 100,000 years. Such is the danger and longevity of waste from nuclear power plants.
Helen called Madsen "One of the more extraordinary people I've ever interviewed". This is a thought provoking exchange between the veteran campaigner, Helen Caldicott, who dedicated her life to alerting us to the nuclear danger, and the young Danish artist. He introduces thoughts about civilization, language, danger and eternity.
In their conversation they say they question how anybody can even contemplate a human made repository that will last 100,000 years and possibly continue without human maintenance. Does this means that the builders do not expect for civilization to last? Or do we have to create an archive of knowledge about the danger of radiation that needs to be maintained? And who maintains that archive?
As mind-bending such a project as Onkalo is, we need several hundred more repositories like Onkalo since most of the waste of the worldâs nuclear power plants is sitting next to these plants in the open. Is it fair to future generations to impose such a burden on them?

UMass "Not Backing Down" Forum's Panel Discussion (3rd and final part)
Sept. 30, 2019, 7:05 p.m.
On May 4th of this year, an important event took place at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. It was a forum called ânot backing downâ and dealt with the constant assault by pro Israeli organizations to shut down pro Palestinian voices. Ironically, which in fact made the point, there were serious attempts to prohibit this very forum from taking place by the Zionist lobby, including an unsuccessful lawsuitâ¦which emphasized the need for this forum to challenge this systematic campaign to silence the Palestinian narrative.
Today we feature voices from the UMass forum, the third of our presentations of the event on This Week In Palestine. You will hear moderator Vijay Prashad, Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, Temple University Prof. Marc Lamont Hill, and Pink Floydâs Roger Waters in a panel discussion which followed the speakersâ presentations. You will hear that there were audience interruptions by pro-Israeli hecklers. We have edited out some interruptions, but have left others so that you can hear how the panelists dealt with this obstructionist behavior. So here is the Panel discussion of the UMass Forum, âNot Backing Downâ.

Sept. 29, 2019, 11:38 a.m.
Classic Parenti from 1993. He shows that "conspiracies" are both real and common--one tool among many that elites use to advance their class interests.
This week he discusses more proven conspiracies. They include the business elite's reversal of US progress towards social democracy (from the 1970s). The State Department's covert scuttling of a peace treaty in Nicaragua (1980s). And the almost-unknown assassination of President Zachary Taylor (1850).
