Herman's Radio & Record Room #2

April 23, 2020, 4:48 a.m.
My father was a radio technician, country & western cowboy singer, and guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s before he enlisted in World War II as a radio technician. This show is my homage to him. My father was a radio engineer and electrician; he loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music & radio shows from mid century America. This is music he would have enjoyed.

David Quammen: Shaking the Viral Tree

April 21, 2020, 7:21 p.m.
In his 2012 book Spillover, Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic, the science writer David Quammen predicted another Corona Virus outbreak. At the end of March 2020 the editor of Emergence Magazine, Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee talked with Quammen who was sheltering in place in his Bozeman, Montana, home. Their conversation explored the ways in which viruses are embedded in the same systems of ecology and evolutionary biology that we humans are. As we disrupt wild ecosystems and shake these viruses free, and experience the consequences, COVID-19 offers an opportunity to reimagine our relationship with the natural world. Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee is a filmmaker, musician and executive editor of Emergence Magazine. David Quammen is an award winning science writer, explorer and author of four books of fiction and eight of non-fiction, including Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic; and The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life.

Dave Brown: How We Shop For News

April 21, 2020, 6:58 p.m.
Media critics have pointed out that news stations these days tend to have a political bent - gone are the days of “objective" journalism. At the same time, it must be acknowledged that MSNBC and Fox News differ greatly in their treatment of what is factual. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio thinks it's all garbage. We are talking with Dave Brown, an attorney, podcast host and freelance sports columnist. We debate the merits of cable TV news, look at the impact it makes during a global health crisis, and speculate about what, if anything, can be done to remediate the bloviation.

No evidence that Covid-19 is causing huge loss of life

April 21, 2020, 11:56 a.m.
Professor Michael Levitt, a Nobel laureate and Stanford biophysicist, says there is no clear evidence that Covid-19 is causing massive loss of life, despite evidence to the contrary in places like Europe and New York City. In fact, Levitt, who is currently stuck in Israel, says it has not been a particularly bad year for flu deaths. And the people who are dying from coronavirus are those who are at risk of death anyway. Professor Levitt believes we're been 'primed for Covid-19 panic.'

Michael Gurian - Let Boys Be Boys Part Two

April 21, 2020, 9:44 a.m.
The Wonder of Boys & A Fine Young Man Boys do not have an easy time growing up and maturing in our complex world these days. The same standard of behavior is frequently expected of boys and girls, often without recognizing the special and different needs of boys. Testosterone is a prime mover in the shaping of boys behavior resulting in their special and different needs. This is a two-part program from the archives of Radio Curious with Michael Gurian, the author of a 1997 book entitled, The Wonder of Boys: What Parents, Mentors and Educators Can Do To Shape Boys Into Exceptional Men. I spoke with Michael Gurian in January of 1998 from his home in Spokane, Washington. Michael Gurian recommends Sex on the Brain, by Deborah Blum & Beyond the Birds and the Bees, Beverly Engle. #633 -- Surveillance Capitalism (R)

April 20, 2020, 6:10 p.m.
Shoshana Zuboff--with Ralph Nader--discusses how Americans have lost their privacy, their freedom, and their personal autonomy. Digital technology is the MEANS of these losses. But the real CAUSE of the problem is "surveillance capitalism," which has taken control of our digital technology. And now it's not just social-media companies. For instance, Ford Motor Company has decided to have its automobiles record, analyze, and deliver for sale information on (literally) your every move. Intro, by KD

Anxiety and the Flight to Safe Living

April 19, 2020, 6:41 p.m.
Margaret Klein Salamon is a clinical psychologist turned climate warrior. Five years ago Margaret claimed a climate emergency and called for mass mobilization. Now cities and countries all over the world have called for a climate emergency. She's written a book about how to overcome eco-anxiety. While all things Corona overwhelm our lives and the news, greenhouse gas emissions have not stopped, and climate change continues to drive more vicious events, including fire, floods, extreme storms, drought, and soon extreme heat in the N. Hemisphere. Forget what will happen by the year 2100 - new science shows large ocean systems will begin to die off during this decade, with land ecology collapsing a decade or two later. Dr. Alex Pigot joins from London to explain this major paper published in the journal Nature.

COVID-19 presents enhanced danger for African-Americans

April 18, 2020, 5:12 p.m.
Déjà Vu All Over Again: Warning! Warning! COVID-19 Presents Enhanced Danger for Nation’s African American Communities with Dr. Donald Moore, a full-time general medicine practitioner, distinguishing for his service to his community and to his profession and who teaches medical students from Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and nurse practitioner students from New York University and Hunter College Nursing Schools. He is a board member of the New York Metro chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. He has been recognized for his humanitarian efforts in health care delivery by the New York State Senate and U.S. Congress. There is a proverbial elephant in the room regarding the potential devastating impact COVID-19 presents for African-Americans says Dr. Moore. There’s an old saying in some African-American communities that is often applied to the broad-stroke disparity of the nation’s economy: when white folks catch a cold, Black folks get pneumonia. Loosely translated, this clichéd quip means a downturn in the economy might pose hardships for some white Americans, but it’s deadly for those Black Americans who are already mired at the bottom of the economic ladder and politically marginalized. Now, too many in the Black & Brown communities lack the resources to effectively combat COVID-19, lacking access to paid sick leave or living without health coverage and are more likely to work in an industry that has been most affected by the pandemic, putting them in greater economic jeopardy or increasing their exposure to the virus. We are facing a global public health crisis, and as in all emergencies, the most marginalized are at increased risk. Communities of color are likely to suffer the brunt of the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus crisis and any legislative response must contain targeted relief.
