Chomsky is 'militantly naive' on Syria

Nov. 5, 2019, 4:15 p.m.
Phil catches Stephen Gowans on the street to discuss his searing new article about Noam Chomsky. Chomsky, commenting on the complex foreign intervention against Syria, is calling on the U.S. to maintain a military presence there in order to 'protect the Kurds.' Gowans disputes Chomsky's reasoning. 1. The occupation isn't 'small' as Chomsky alleges. Besides ground troops, there's the U.S.-directed YPG, and the massive power of the U.S. Air Force. 2. Chomsky ignores the purpose of the U.S. occupation, which is to weaken Syria and its control over its own oil, and block transit between Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Does Chomsky have a tenuous grasp of the facts, or is he a sophist? And why does he rely on Western power to sort things out?

Homelessness and Austerity

Nov. 4, 2019, 10:10 p.m.
In this episode of Back in the USSR, Siegfried discusses the crisis of homelessness in Guelph, Ontario as winter closes in. But this local crisis is hardly an isolated case in a capitalist society that treats so many people as "surplus", "worthless", "unprofitable", "expendable". All around the world we are facing a capitalism gone berserk, an austerity regime that cuts human services to the bone and facilitates the plunder of whole nations in the name of the Fortune 500. This is the monster that working class and oppressed people are rising up against all over the world. It is the monster they must slay through international solidarity.

Ajamu Baraka: Canadians should join resistance to the new colonialism

Nov. 4, 2019, 6:26 p.m.
At a time when U.S. interventionism rampages in more countries than one can count, people who think of themselves as 'liberals,' 'progressives,' and 'anti-war' are standing around with their hands in their pockets. (or even aligning themselves with the U.S. state.) It is in this atmosphere that journalist Max Blumenthal was snatched by militarized police for his earlier action in defending the Venezuelan embassy. Ajamu Baraka will be speaking on all these issues: how "humanitarian intervention" and the "responsibility to protect" are part of a neo-colonial U.S. drive to dominate the Global South. From the colonial era to the present, Euro-Americans have employed violence to reorder the world. And when the colonial state becomes stronger abroad, it has more forces to deploy at home. Baraka explains the need for Canadians to join the growing resistance.

Rebuilding the Anti-War Movement - Why and How?

Nov. 1, 2019, 2:26 p.m.
Kevin Zeese spoke to a group of peace and justice activists organized by Chicago Area Peace Action. He was in town as part of a multi state tour to raise funds for the trial defense of the Embassy Protection Collective; a historic action by private citizens to defend International Law and the right of another nation to spend its wealth on housing, health and education for the majority of its citizens rather than allow it to be stolen by wealthy elites and foreign corporations; the real reason the CIA promotes coups abroad and at home. There is, he says, a growing movement, at all levels, to break from the idea of a national defense policy based on conflict, coercion and war to one of diplomacy, cooperation and peace. Kevin Zeese speaks of the campaigns that he is involved in to that end, and the work of Popular Resistance which, with his partner Dr.Margrett Flowers, is engaged in education and movement building around a national consensus. He speaks of how the much hyped "military parade" that Trump wanted was defeated. Social movements have eight stages according to the Bill Moyers model of social struggle. That the corporate media, in collusion with the wealthy elites that own it underplay the successes won is not surprising he says. Often activists are unable to see what they have achieved, yet the Moyer's model explains that moment as but a specific stage in the struggle towards victory . History has shown that a successful movement needs only 3% support from the population to win.
