Israel: A Beachhead in the Middle East

Oct. 24, 2019, 8:02 a.m.
Stephen Gowans describes how Israel was first created as an extension of 19th century European colonialism and functions today as a means of power projection for the United States. The U.S. seeks to dominate the Arab world, and Israel has demonstrated its value in weakening Arab forces that seek self-determination. Gowans traces the history, from the early marriage between the racist and pessimistic ideas shared by Zionists and European imperialists alike, to the U.S. desire today to keep the Arab nation divided and off-balance. Donald Drumpf Theatre Vol. 145 Quid Pro Quo

Oct. 23, 2019, 8:54 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 15 episodes, but there are threats of cancellation. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Horace Greeley & David Fenimore - Go West, Young Man, Go West!

Oct. 22, 2019, 11:10 p.m.
Newspapers were the primary means of mass communication in 19th Century America. They not only told the news, but they pervaded social and political ideas of the times. Horace Greeley was one of the most colorful and outspoken newspapermen of his day. “Read and judge yourself,” was a slogan of his, almost as well known in his lifetime as his slogan, “Go west, young man, go west,” is known now. I spoke with Horace Greeley through the personage of Chautauqua scholar David Fenimore during the 1996 Democracy in America Chautauqua series that visited Ukiah, CA. Horace Greeley recommends “Democracy in America,” by Alexis de Tocqueville. David Fenimore recommends “Breaking News: How the Media Undermine American Democracy,” by James Fallows & “Who Will Tell the People?” by William Greider. Originally Broadcast: February 26, 1997

5G Cellular Network Technology - Boris Johnson and Devra Davis

Oct. 22, 2019, 7:12 p.m.
Late in the evening of September 24, 2019, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson surprised the UN General Assembly in New York City when he stepped to the podium. He gave an extraordinary - even poetic - description of the digital surveillance age. He said that digital authoritarianism is not the stuff of dystopian fantasy but of an emerging reality. Devra Davis earned a PhD in science studies at the University of Chicago. She founded the non-profit Environmental Health Trust in 2007 to provide basic research and education about environmental health hazards and promote constructive policies locally and internationally. She is currently visiting Professor of Medicine in Israel and Turkey. She was interviewed by podcaster David Wolfe about 5G and Mobile Phone Safety. Two days earlier, on August 21, 2019, the Chicago Tribune had shaken up the smartphone industry by publishing tests by an accredited lab, that showed that radiofrequency radiation exposure from the most popular smartphones measured higher than the legal safety limit. In one case more than five times higher than the manufacturer reported to federal regulators. Dr. Devra Davis is founder of the non-profit Environmental Health Trust at ehtrust.org. Her most recent book is: Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Is Doing to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family.

Making America Care Again: Why Americans Should Oppose War

Oct. 21, 2019, 4:13 p.m.
War is “out of sight, out of mind” to most Americans most of the time. Yet, day after day, the U.S. government is murdering people abroad while depriving our communities of badly needed resources at home. Peace activist Rich Whitney cuts through the disinformation about U.S. foreign policy that trivializes war. His presentation will remind listeners of the horrific consequences of war abroad and at home, the illegality of war, the real economic drivers of war– and the crucial importance of engaging in a renewed struggle against war and the system that perpetuates it. Rich Whitney is an attorney from Carbondale, Illinois, now working as an appellate public defender. He is a founding member of the Illinois Green Party and served as the Party’s first candidate for Governor of Illinois in 2006 winning over 360,000 votes. His current activist roles include serving as co-chair of the Illinois Green Party and as an active participant in the Green Party Peace Action Committee, the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism and he is also active in several other progressive organizations.
