Dr. Larry Brilliant: Covid 19 - Outbreaks are Inevitable, But Pandemics are Optional

March 31, 2020, 7:58 p.m.
In the Spring of 2017, at a release party for his book: Sometimes Brilliant he sketched out his extraordinary voyage from civil rights movement, to medical training to helping out as physician during the occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes. In the Bay Area Larry Brilliant connected with the psychedelic and music counterculture, and followed the hippie trail from London over the Khyber Pass to India - with his wife Elaine, Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm commune. One of India’s best known spiritual teachers, Neem Karoli Baba, told him his destiny was to work for the World Health Organization to help eradicate smallpox. Larry Brilliant became a key participant in eliminating that 10,000-year-old disease that killed half a billion people in the 20th century alone. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980. On March 24, 2020, Larry Brilliant was interviewed by Dr. Daniel Kraft, Chair for Medicine, Singularity University Brilliant currently serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Board for Ending Pandemics. He also works with the charitable organizations launched by the major technology corporations such as Google and the Skoll Group.

Chinese Air Quality + Ekoru Search Engine

March 31, 2020, 4:42 p.m.
Looking for some good news as we enter yet another week of sheltering-in-place? Perhaps you feel like doing a Google search to discover an upside to the slow down? As this week’s first guest on Sea Change Radio, Liz Kimbrough, notes, there are no true silver linings from this pandemic. But if you squint hard enough, it’s possible to catch a glimmer of light at the end of this scary, dark tunnel. Kimbrough, a writer for the online environmental journal, Mongabay, takes us through some of her recent reporting. First, we discuss the impact that global economic stagnation is having on our air quality and then we look at efforts that are being taken to protect the 1000 or so mountain gorillas that remain on earth from contracting COVID-19. After that, we speak to Ati Bakush about his company Ekoru, a Malaysian-based search engine that runs on water power and donates 60% of its revenues to ocean conservation. After learning about Ekoru, perhaps you'll feel like switching out your default search engine before you run that search for good news!

Nurses Blast Government And Hospital Readiness For Coronavirus

March 27, 2020, 6:03 p.m.
Nurses Blast Government And Hospital Readiness For Coronavirus with Deborah Burger, practicing nurse and co-president of National Nurses United and president o the California Nurses Association (CAN). CNA now represents over 57,000 nurses in 164 facilities across California. With CNA, California nurses have led the nation in ground-breaking patient advocacy legislation such as staffing ratios and whistle-blower protections. In the midst of Covid-19, the union National Nurses United surveyed its members and found they were lacking the equipment, training and clear guidelines they need right now. The nurses fighting the spread of coronavirus in response to the survey have unleashed a flood of criticism on the federal government and their employers, saying they have been left poorly equipped to care for their patients and protect themselves amid the outbreak. Members of the union said they have faced shifting guidelines and a shortage of supplies as the tally of known infections has increased. They called on the Centers for Disease Control to quickly increase testing for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and demanded that federal officials implement emergency standards for hospitals and clinics around the country. The CDC has been behind the ball at almost every step of the way, said Jane Thomason, an industrial hygienist for the union
