#607 -- Searching for the Authentic on a Motorcycle (R)
Oct. 19, 2019, 8:42 p.m.
A "personal essay" in the tradition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It's about motorcycle design, the rebirth of the "Indian" brand, and the quiet, subtle virtues of a Harley-Davidson. It's about how New England place-names begin to make sense after you've lived here 20 to 30 years. It's about the phony food and the phony architecture of corporate franchises. And it's about searching for the authentic on a motorcycle--and sometimes finding it when you get far enough out of town.

Analyzing Bernie Sandersâ Workplace Democracy Plan
with
Shaun Richman is an In These Times contributing writer and the Program Director of the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies at SUNY Empire State College.
Senator Bernie Sanders has announced his Workplace Democracy Plan to build worker power on the job by protecting unionizing and strikes by workers. In many ways it goes back to the intent of New Deal Legislation which have been seriously weakened over the years by right wing legislation and court decisions. But it also builds on them calling for new private and public sector workers rights and forms of union representation that transcend the National Labor Relations Board framework of enterprise based contract bargaining.
As a labor movement now is the time to demand more. Much more! So letâs analyze Senator Sanders proposals and his ideas to give private and public sector workers a fair shake.

Campaign 2019: The Issues Nobody is Talking about in the Canadian Federal Election
Oct. 18, 2019, 8:55 a.m.
With the Canadian federal election just days away, the Global Research News Hour tackles critical issues, particularly foreign policy, not being addressed by the major political parties or the media.
In the first half hour, we convene a discussion with Canadian foreign policy critic and author Yves Engler and with anti-war activist Ken Stone about the myths and realities surrounding Canadian involvement in the Middle East and militarism more generally and what distinctions if any exist among the different political parties in these areas. In the second half hour, journalist and writer Arnold August discusses Canada's 'policy shift' toward Venezuela and Cuba and why he sees Trudeau's 'slavish' attitude toward the U.S. as unprecedented in modern times. Finally, award- winning freelance writer and researcher Joyce Nelson talks about the Canada Infrastructure Bank and how this little discussed Crown Corporation threatens to oversee the privatization of water and wastewater services across the country.

Oct. 15, 2019, 7:12 p.m.
Chaim Potok, the author of âThe Chosen,â âThe Gift of Asher Lev,âDavidaâs Heart,â and many other novels, chronicled the life of a Russian Jewish family in the non-fictions story, âThe Gates of November.â This true story of the Slapeck family, Solomon Slapek, his son Valodya, and daughter-in-law Masha, spans 100 years. Beginning with Solomonâs childhood at turn of the 20th century, his escape to America and return to Russia, it eventually describes Valodya and Mashaâs life after they apply for an exit visa to leave Russia in 1968, in order to emigrate to Israel. Chaim Potok died July 23, 2002, at his suburban Philadelphia home of brain cancer at the age of 73.
The book Chaim Potok recommends is âThe English Patient,â by Michael Ondaatje.

Blanchet of the Bloc Quebecois: Leadership means not bowing to United States
Oct. 15, 2019, 5:20 p.m.
Robin Philpot appears on the Taylor Report to discuss the comments by Yves-François Blanchet, leader of the Bloc Québécois, that the Trudeau government was wrong to arrest Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the bidding of the Trump Administration.
"When youâre facing a powerful foe like China," argued Blanchet, "you donât try to show biceps if you have only tiny biceps.â
Blanchet repeated the point at both the English and French Leaders' Debates and elsewhere. But the media seems to have completely ignored the remark. Blanchet deliberately made the remark because of how Canadian farmers, and especially farmers in Quebec, were affected.
The Bloc is leading in Quebec ridings among Francophone voters because Blanchet's remarks have resonated with them.
