Sonic Cafe #140/Won't You Be My Neighbor?

June 13, 2019, 7:51 a.m.
Sonic Café. Hey, howdy neighbor. This is episode 140 and I’m your host Scott Clark. This time our eclectic mix of music, comedy and pop culture presents a parody of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, the beloved kids show that featured 895 episodes played out over three decades. To make it happen we’ve pulled up an almost endless string of comedic bits and parodies. Listen for Jim Carey, Johnny Caron, Eddie Murphy, Aaron Burnell, the National Lampoon Radio Hour and more. All played against an eclectic music mix pulled from 46 years, that evokes feelings of returning home, to your neighborhood in your home town. Listen for Supertramp, Ozzy Osbourne, Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, The Peddlers, Eric Bibb and of course many more. So put your sweaters on boys and girls, look out the window, and watch as our moving van pulls up to the house next door. Whew that’s a scary thought, huh? All this time from our neighborhood of make believe, here at little café on the big, blue Pacific coast. We’re the Sonic Café.

Sid Ryan - A Grander Vision

June 12, 2019, 6:36 p.m.
Canadian labour leader Sid Ryan discusses his new book, part autobiography, and part prescription for social movements and Labour. Sid recounts his early life, and how it developed his capacity to resist inequality and oppression. These lessons would serve him well as President of CUPE and the OFL. Fraught by divisions in Labour and the lack of synergy with the NDP, Sid calls for a social vision of unionism in Canada that melds struggles of class and anti-oppression into a cohesive programme against neo-liberalism.

Prof. Don Huber: The Impact of GMOs and the Herbicide Roundup on Crops, Animals, People and the Environment, Part TWO of TWO

June 11, 2019, 6:23 p.m.
A revolution in our food supply and in agriculture has taken place in the last 20 years that has remained unknown, secret or unrecognized – depending on your point of view. However the efforts to label genetically modified organisms by consumers and the forceful resistance to the right to know what we eat by corporations that produce the genetically engineered corn, soy, beets, alfalfa etc. have triggered a fundamental question. If GMO plants are nutritious, safe and ecologically sound – why are corporations not proud to label their GMO foods? Dr. Don Huber, Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology, Microbiology, and Soil-borne Disease Control came out of retirement to speak out on the dangers of glyphosate and genetically modified plants. He was one of the early critics of GMO food and of the use of glyphosate on GMO plants that were bred to survive applications of the weed-killer. In this part of his talk he reports on the findings of his lab at Perdue University. GMO plants sprayed with Monsanto’s Roundup that contains glyphosate are less drought tolerant, have smaller root-balls, need more irrigation, lack in important minerals, are susceptible to disease, and can damage the liver and reproductive capacity of animals fed with them. Also glyphosate persists much longer in the soil than claimed by Monsanto. Some of these lab results now have become public as Monsanto had to disclose internal papers and e-mail in the damage claims that have been successfully raised in court by a school grounds keepers and home owners who used Roundup and now suffer from cancer (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma). Prof. Don Huber came to the second annual Heirloom Seed Expo in Santa Rosa, California, in September 2012, to present his research. Recorded 9/12/2012

Adam Sobel: Science In The Eye Of The Hurricane

June 11, 2019, 2:26 p.m.
It's summertime! That means county fairs, stone fruit, and hopefully a cool body of water in which to dip one's toes. Of course, it also means record temperatures and the beginning of hurricane season. Today on Sea Change Radio we are talking weather with Adam Sobel, an atmospheric scientist at Columbia University. We discuss the difference between climate and weather, learn about the importance of accurate forecasts in the age of extreme weather, and dispel some preposterous myths about climate scientists.

Scott McCloud - The Invisible Art

June 11, 2019, 1:30 p.m.
Understanding Comics, A Rather Colorful Display: The Invisible Art Comics have come to hold quite an important place in contemporary society. Satire, particularly political commentary, is perhaps closest to its essence when expressed in the visual comic. However, it also can be argued that comics have played a far greater role in the history of humanity, tracing back to all images depicting a sequential number of actions. My guest in this program is Scott McCloud, author of “Understanding Comics, A Rather Colorful Display: The Invisible Art,” a book about the history of comics. Scott McCloud recommends “Jar of Fools,” by Jason Lutes. Originally Broadcast: August 27, 1994

The Ominous Parallels - 8

June 11, 2019, 10:40 a.m.
The Nazi synthesis was an entreaty to all, to the reactionary, to the radical. I was meant to placate the devout, to intrigue the pagan, soothe the old, intoxicate the young, reassure the haves and offer a new day to the have-nots. The Nazis promised everything to everybody in a manifesto issued in February, 1920, titled the 25-point Program aka the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, about which German political scientist and historian of the Weimar Republic Karl Dietrich Bracher wrote “was little more than an effective, persuasive propaganda weapon for mobilizing and manipulating the masses. Once it had brought him to power, it became pure decoration: ‘unalterable,’ yet unrealized in its demands for nationalization and expropriation, for land reform and ‘breaking the shackles of finance capital.’ Yet it nonetheless fulfilled its role as backdrop and pseudo-theory, against which the future dictator could unfold his rhetorical and dramatic talents.”
