The Axis of Resistance

March 22, 2020, 12:10 a.m.
Dr. Tim Anderson's new book is as much about Empire as it is about Resistance. "The Axis of Resistance" details how U.S.-led imperialism uses sanctions, "humanitarian intervention" and juvenile propaganda in order to undermine the rights and protections of Global South states. It's also, naturally, a treatment of the elements that constitute resistance to U.S. power in West Asia (the "Middle East"). Anderson discusses why regional integration is essential to resisting an external hegemon, and his book explores the origins and connections between Hezbollah, the Islamic Republic, and the Syrian Arab Republic. "Axis of Resistance" is a must-read for those seeking to understand the past 20+ years of U.S. war on the "Middle East," and why it is falling apart.

Extreeme neurotypical 'social distancing' vs. shame during a red cross blood shortage.

March 20, 2020, 5:51 p.m.
Mad love and a plea to remember those at risk of dying from anything else about now. Can we start to question and think about surviving coronavirus pandemic and about our needs should any of us make it after all? I can do this NOW because I have POST traumatic stress disorder (both blessing and curse). After the mass crises the U.S.A. and wider world faces what will become of the old societal norms? My biggest anxiety these days: Will the world itself succumb to institutionalization?

Chicago Food Policy Summit - Keynote Speeches

March 20, 2020, 4:10 p.m.
Malik Yakini, co-founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, speaks about food security within the larger context of building power, self-determination, and justice in a landscape of white supremacy, capitalism and patriarchy. It could be seen as a liberation struggle, one to free people oppressed by the corporate capture of their food supply and its corresponding colonization of their consciousness. I read his goal that they regain control over their nourishment, culture and community through local production and distribution systems that reconnect people both to the land and community. Detroit is where he has put into practice what he learned from mentor Will Allen, founder of Milwaukee based Growing Power, and the many years of social justice agitation, community organizing and work as a high school principle. Malik also contributes to the international food sovereignty movement that seeks to check the destruction of indigenous food and cultural production by multinational corporations in the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa. He is on the leadership team of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance. His talk highlights a model program that links black urban farmers in need of land and food producers with Black Churches who often have both land and commercial kitchens that can bypass the endemic lack of access to capital. Navina Khanna is founding director of the HEAL Food Alliance. for the past 15 years she has worked to create more just and sustainable world through transforming food systems. Based in Oakland, California she is an educator, community organizer and policy advocate.

March 19, 2020, 9:57 a.m.
Sonic Café that’s Consumption, ZZ Top music from the La Futura album release, so what’ goin’ on? I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 179. This time the Sonic Café presents the real reason everyone can’t seem to get onboard and support the changes we need to make to battle this whole global warming thing… problem is, it’s just not scary enough. Comedian Bengt Washburn has all of the details, plus some great insights into how we can use a couple of ideas from the 1970s to turn this thing all around. Ahh Yeah. We’ve wrapped his thoughts in a music mix pulled from nearly 40 years. Listen for The Killers, Garbage, Maroon 5, the Talking Heads, Smashing Pumpkins and more. Oh and a big Sonic Café welcome to our latest sponsor. Listen for a word from Amu-nation. When the grid goes down and the dystopian future begins Amu-nation will have your back. All that and some more neat stuff too, as the Sonic Café brings you the problem with Global Warming, it just Isn’t Scary Enough from that little café on the coast, with a John Fogerty from Blue Moon Swamp… this is 110 Degrees In The Shade. We’re the Sonic Café.

Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 11 months of episodes. Joan Jacobs Brumberg - An Intimate History of American Girls Part 2

March 18, 2020, 7:40 p.m.
The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls Advertising has had a major effect on how we view our bodies and on our individual self-image. The history of how this advertising has come to affect American girls as they pass through menarche and adolescence is presented in a book called “The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls.” This book describes the historical roots of acute societal and psychological pressures that girls feel today. It shows how the female adolescent experience has changed since 1895. The author, Joan Jacobs Brumberg, is a Professor of History and Women’s Studies at Cornell University in New York. In this two-part program, I spoke Professor Brumberg in October of 1997 and asked her what drew her to write “The Body Project.” Joan Jacobs Brumberg recommends “Learning to Bow,” by Bruce Feiler & “The Grass Link,” by May Vinchi. Originally Broadcast: October 14, 1997 & October 21, 1997
