My guest in this program is Sam La Budde, a catalyst, if not the catalyst, in getting dolphins out of tuna nets. He has been an activist with the Earth Island Institute and a number of other organizations. In this conversation, we discussed the history of the dolphins, endangered species in Taiwan, and a potential economic boycott of redwood lumber. This program was originally broadcast in September of 1992, when Radio Curious was called Government, Politics and Ideas.

The Authoritarian Absurdity of the U.S. Constitution ONE of TWO
April 9, 2019, 5:41 p.m.
Paul Street is an independent radical-democratic policy researcher, teacher, journalist, historian, and author of seven books. In this talk, that he gave at the Open University of the Left in Chicago in March 2019, he offered arguments and proof that the US constitution is not the sacred document protecting the "Peoples Rightsâ, but on the contrary is authoritarian and anti-democratic by design.
For the 18th Century slaveholders and merchants popular sovereignty was the ultimate nightmare and they embedded safety mechanisms into the constitution that remain in force today via the Senate, Supreme Court and Electoral College. Street details how U.S. politics and policy are badly distorted by the nation's exceptionally durable charter and how we might finally stop playing "Simon Says" with militant anti-democrats like Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay.
Paul Street has authored seven books to date, among them: Racial Oppression in the Global Metropolis: a Living Black Chicago History; The Empireâs New Clothes: Barack Obama in the Real World of Power; Crashing the Tea Party: Mass Media and the Campaign to Remake American Politics; and They Rule: The 1% v. Democracyâ¦
Paul Streetâs essays and commentaries have appeared in a wide variety of media such as CounterPunch, Truthdig, Black Agenda Report, the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and CNN to name only a few.
Georgina Gustin on the Farm Bureau
April 9, 2019, 5:21 p.m.
You may or may not have heard of the Farm Bureau but it is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in this country, representing over six million members. And what does the Farm Bureau advocate for? More than you might think. As this weekâs guest on Sea Change Radio, Inside Climate News reporter Georgina Gustin, explains, the Farm Bureau has been pushing conservative policies for over four decades now. Gustin gives us a better understanding of what the Farm Bureau does, whom it represents, and the environmental threat that it poses. Then, we revisit our discussion with Zero Mass Water CEO Cody Friesen who explains his companyâs unique technology that turns humidity in the air into drinking water, using solar energy.
Mystery History Theater - 7
April 9, 2019, 4:53 p.m.
John Wilkes Booth, a Southern sympathizer and a war profiteer, signs on to abduct Lincoln for Southern, Northern and British business interests, not to revenge the imminent demise of the Confederate States of America.
But principals in the wheeling and dealing are not content with Boothâs dramatic posturings and lack of results. They want Captain James William Boyd, a Confederate spy and capable guerilla, to take over the abduction plan.
Did the Money Men unwittingly sign Lincolnâs death warrant? Or did a higher political power decide Lincoln had to be deposed, not for just a âfortnightâ but permanently?
The clock begins ticking louder and faster as the Ides of April near an unforgettable end.
Reverend Mariama White Hammond's reportback ...
April 9, 2019, 2:47 p.m.
Today we finish up our presentation of the reportback by Nancy and Hubert Murray and the Reverend Mariama White Hammond. Last week we featured Nancy and Hubert Murray's presentations. As promised, this week we feature White Hammond's presentation, followed by the very rich question and answer discussion. This was a particularly inciteful reportback because of the historical perspective offered by this particular delegation.
Rev. White-Hammond is an advocate for ecological and social justice, youth engagement, and Spirit-filled organizing. As former director of Project HIP-HOP ("Highways Into the Past - History, Organizing and Power"), she used the arts as a tool to raise awareness for social issues from juvenile incarceration to funding for public transportation. She is very committed to engaging the faith community, and particularly the Black church on climate change and ecological justice issues. She presently serves as the pastor at the New Roots AME Church in Dorchester, MA.
Before we end, here is an update on the continuing assault by the Israeli lobby on campus groups who stand in support of Palestinian liberation and in particular the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign (BDS). Recently there have been provocations on 2 campuses, Swarthmore on the East coast, and Pitzer in the west.
The outside pressure on groups at Swarthmore has been so intense that it fostered a letter of support, which we read, from prominent educators and activists across the country. At Pitzer, a Mondoweiss article, which we read, begins with this summary: "Pitzer Collegeâs governing council took an historic vote to suspend a program of study at the University of Haifa because of Israelâs discriminatory policies. And just three hours later that resolution was vetoed, emphatically, by the college president."
Stay tuned!

interviews Bruce Gagnon from the Global Network
April 7, 2019, 8:58 p.m.
Latin Waves host Stuart Richardson interviews Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and publisher of a blog called Organizing Notes. We speak about the ongoing US coup attempts in Venezuela and how this is causing global insecurity with Russia, how many nations and the corporate media are red baiting to demonize the public towards Russia.
How this may be connected to resources now becoming available in the Arctic due to climate change, this maybe the area of future conflicts. We speak about how the Global Network is sending a peace delegation to Russia to try and calm tensions. And most importantly how we can come together regarding climate change.

Racism in America's Military
April 7, 2019, 12:09 p.m.
Twenty year career veteran of the United States Air Force with a specialty in logistics, Natasha Erskine, having reached a rank of Senior NCO, speaks about her experience, the awards and advancements she received, her coming to terms with the institutional racism she encountered in her military career and how she had to fight to receive her retirement benefits after reporting the white nationalists, racist and bigots she found herself working with during her last deployment, just ahead of eligibility for retirement. She speaks of how the military regularly betrays minorities by rifting them out after doctoring their service records.
She speaks of the trauma to self and friends that the multiple foreign deployments, required for career advancement, in a culture that discourages seeking mental health counseling, that placed women at risk of rape by servicemen and contractors alike, on the U.S. bases where they were deployed once the US declared it's "War On Terror". Though always "behind the wire" she began to recognize her roll in the violence and killing as an enabler and the connection between the military and policing in the United States following the killing of Michael Brown. The same equipment she was shipping from the battle fields of Iraq as surplus ended up in Ferguson, Missouri and eventually in her own community on the South side of Chicago.
She now councils inner city Chicago high school students, whose career options have been narrowed by the racists efforts of Chicago's out going mayor Rahm Emanuel and other liberal Democrats who have pushed JROTC into certain schools,
limiting career options and steering students toward the military; even instituting a program of "no diploma" unless one has enlisted in the military, has a job, is admitted to college or doing community service following graduation. The last question she answers address the campaign to demilitarize the Chicago Public Schools, demanding that it returns the skilled trades programs that it removed, programs and training that can provide realistic alternatives to the military.
Phantasms of Freedom, Part 9
April 7, 2019, 8:20 a.m.
How well do we know the history of our nation? As for our Founders, what is fact? What is myth? While we have been told we are free, we face an increasing onslaught of laws, edicts, and proclamations governing our lives as American citizens. We have been told that âwe need to get our Constitution back.â Do we truly need to do that?
We are, during every election cycle, given a âchoice.â But is it a real choice? Or a Hobsonâs choice? Were our Founders the godlike, towering figures we were taught? Were they above reproach? Or were they human beings, subject to the same avarice, temptations and lust we all are?
What were their motivations in starting this country? Were they benign in nature, inspired to offer their fellow countrymen âlife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?â Or were there other instincts at play?
Was the Constitution truly designed to be the bulwark of freedom? Why were the Articles of Confederation jettisoned? Who were the Anti-Federalists? Why did they get such short shrift by history? What was the worth of the Founders? Were they Everymen? Or rich elites?
The answers, when explored from an âunofficialâ vantage point, may surprise you.
Listen along as Eric the Blacksmith discusses American history with Al Aric and Theo. Current events are interspersed. Explore the nooks and crannies of suppressed information as the book âHologram of Libertyâ by Kenneth Royce is reviewed and its bibliography examined.
#579 -- Chris Hedges: The Algebra of Revolution, Part 2 (R)
April 7, 2019, 7:27 a.m.
Part 2 of the hard-hitting speech by journalist/essayist Chris Hedges. It's about the corruption of "the System," the ever-increasing power of "the one percent," the betrayal of the people by the Democratic and Republican parties, the century-long crackdown on dissent, and our increasingly meaningless national politics--in which our nation's real and pressing problems are seldom even mentioned--let alone debated, let alone put to a vote.
