Spectrum Cable Strikers Propose Forming A Workers' Cooperative To Take Over The Cable Franchise

Spectrum Cable Strikers At Two Year Mark Keep On Keeping On & Are Even Looking Into Forming A Workers' Cooperative To Take Over The Cable Franchise
with
Troy Walcott, Local 3 IBEW Shop Steward and striking Spectrum Technician
and
Ray Reyes, striking Spectrum technician
Some 1,800 workers represented by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, (IBEW), Local 3 struck Charter Spectrum Communications (Spectrum) , the company which bought out Time Warner Cable in May 2016. They struck in response to employer proposed cuts to healthcare and pension benefits in the wake of the buy-out. To add insult to injury, as the resolve of the workers not to capitulate hits its two-year mark, Spectrum seeks the decertification of the union " to remove the union as the sole bargaining agent for the unit. If successful, the bargaining unit would no longer be in a union.
Meanwhile on the political front the strikers have suffered another blow. While Spectrums license to operate the cable franchise with the state and the city is up for renewal in 2020, despite Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio having proclaimed their support of the strike and having argued against its renewal, a recent ruling by the N.Y.S. Public Service Commission may still pave the way for the renewal. This latest affront seriously weakens the strikers political pressure point to force the cable behemoth to negotiate a fair contract.
Nevertheless despite the toll the strike has taken on these intrepid workers keep on keeping on, and have even, with the support of their union been exploring the creation of a workers cooperative to actually take over the cable franchise. The workers say a co-op would improve broadband service across the city, offer reduced cost, expand access, create good jobs, and ensure net neutrality in New York and the Mayor seems to be listening.

#577 -- Propaganda, Capitalism, Empire, Media
March 21, 2019, 5:53 p.m.
Media scholar Mark Crispin Miller explores how the government--aided by the corporate media--molds public opinion through massive and unceasing campaigns of propaganda. This propaganda manufactures widespread public consent for imperialism, neoliberal economic policies, and military adventures abroad.
In a brief introduction, KD analyzes the propaganda saturating a N.Y Times "news" article on Venezuela (March 13, 2019).

Is It So, what we hear, about Venezuela?
March 21, 2019, 11:50 a.m.
Charlie Hardy, a former Catholic priest from Wyoming, works with the poor of the barrios of Caracas Venezuela. He speaks about how the Bolivarian revolution changed Venezuela, from their viewpoint, and how, prior to Hugo Chavez, the U.S. supported two party "democracy" addressed the needs of its poorest citizens. He played a clip from a documentary on the changes he witnessed after Chavez's election to the Presidency in 1998.
Charlie spent 10 years living in a public housing project that became, literally, a mountain of human shit as the government provided no running water, sewers or sanitation system for its thousands of inhabitants. He offers practical advice on taking care of "business" should one find themselves in such a circumstance.
In 1985 when he arrived, U.S. Corporations owned most of Venezuela's economy and exploited its natural resources with little of the profits returning to fund Venezuelan social needs. The oil wealth, though publicly owned, went to the richest and whitest members of society. Now, under the Bolivarian Constitution, mineral wealth is a public resource to fund the needs of the many, not just the few. That's a policy that outrages the domestic and U.S. ruling class who have worked to reverse the advances made in health, housing, education, food security and human rights, and noted by the UN as some of the most outstanding in the world prior to the all out campaign of economic war and industrial sabotage orchestrated by the United States.
Charlie explains the election system, the origins of the constitutional crisis that is stoked by U.S. interference in its internal affairs, and Venezuela's election system that puts what exists in the U.S. to shame according to the President Carter Center that monitors election integrity.
Hear how the Venezuelan people are organizing to prepare for US aggression, and how the US sanctions are hurting their lives. Charlie's great fear is that the U.S. will soon start bombing as in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yugoslavia on the pretext of providing aid to people in need.

Phantasms of Freedom, Part 7
March 20, 2019, 6:10 a.m.
How well do we know the history of our nation? As for our Founders, what is fact? What is myth? While we have been told we are free, we face an increasing onslaught of laws, edicts, and proclamations governing our lives as American citizens. We have been told that âwe need to get our Constitution back.â Do we truly need to do that?
We are, during every election cycle, given a âchoice.â But is it a real choice? Or a Hobsonâs choice? Were our Founders the godlike, towering figures we were taught? Were they above reproach? Or were they human beings, subject to the same avarice, temptations and lust we all are?
What were their motivations in starting this country? Were they benign in nature, inspired to offer their fellow countrymen âlife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?â Or were there other instincts at play?
Was the Constitution truly designed to be the bulwark of freedom? Why were the Articles of Confederation jettisoned? Who were the Anti-Federalists? Why did they get such short shrift by history? What was the worth of the Founders? Were they Everymen? Or rich elites?
The answers, when explored from an âunofficialâ vantage point, may surprise you.
Listen along as Eric the Blacksmith discusses American history with Al Aric and Theo. Current events are interspersed. Explore the nooks and crannies of suppressed information as the book âHologram of Libertyâ by Kenneth Royce is reviewed and its bibliography examined.
