Woodbine, Onaje Ph.D. — Black Gods of the Asphalt Part Two
Feb. 26, 2019, 3:54 p.m.
The transcendent experience of street basketball is the topic of two conversations with Onaje X. O. Woodbine, author of âBlack Gods of the Asphalt: Religion, Hip-Hop, and Street Basketball.â Woodbine grew up in the inner-city of Roxbury, Massachusetts, became a skilled street basketball player and attended Yale University on a basketball scholarship. After two years as a star player on the Yale team, he chose a different life path and quit.
After graduating from Yale, Woodbine earned his Ph.D. in religious studies from Boston University. His book, âBlack Gods of the Asphaltâ presents a social-anthropological view of this inner-city sport where coaches often assume the role of father, mentor and friend. He contrasts the lessons learned on the street basketball courts, with those learned at the predominantly white basketball courts and locker rooms of Yale University.
Onaje Woodbine visited with Radio Curious by phone on August 13, 2016, from his home in Andover, Massachusetts. In part one we discussed his experiences growing up and playing on the basketball courts in the inner city and how that differend from the Ivy League schools he later went to. In part two, we began our conversation when I asked him to explain the ethnographic research and methods he used in making his book, âBlack Gods of the Asphalt.â
The book Dr. Onaje Woodbine recommends is âJesus and the Disinheritedâ by Howard Thurman.

Rwandan-Belgians Insist On Their Rights, Resist Slander and Intimidation.
Feb. 26, 2019, 10:43 a.m.
The government of Rwanda insists on an official narrative about the events leading up to the 1994 fighting, and massacres of civilians. Any questioning or assertion of facts by unauthorized individuals or organizations draws the wrath of the RPF authorities. And the policy extends abroad, where Rwandans living in Europe find that speaking their truth can bring harassment and intimidation.
Mr. Mbonyumutwa and others are challenging the bullies through the justice system and demanding respect for their rights.

#573 -- Robert Fisk and Chris Hedges
Feb. 23, 2019, 8:09 p.m.
In separate talks, two fine journalists discuss current affairs--ROBERT FISK and CHRIS HEDGES. Different in style, they are alike in their hatred of lies and propaganda, their command of recent history--and their disdain for Trump's presidency.
Fisk discusses the war in Syria, Iran, Putin, Trump, and the flood of propaganda in the media. Hedges discusses how social justice requires economic justice and also effective means of nonviolently overturning established power.
Plus a song by Yikes McGee.

Former IDF soldier Eran Efrati speaks out on policing and the Deadly Exchange program
Feb. 22, 2019, 8:57 p.m.
Eran Efrati reports that he left the IDF because he objected to what it does. He spoke in great detail recently in Boston on policing and the U.S.-Israel Deadly Exchange.
The Deadly Exchange consists of American and Israeli police visiting each others' countries, all expenses paid, nominally by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other captured but supposedly respectable NGOs, but ultimately borne by U.S. taxpayers, to learn their counterparts' "best practices" and "up-to-the-minute security measures." That's why we're seeing more military weapons, more surveillance, more "terrorist" rhetoric, and more fascism from the cops whose job is to protect us.
ADL's involvement appears designed to earn the approval of those who haven't yet learned that ADL was taken over by the Israel-can-do-no-wrong claque. It's no longer a Jewish-oriented civil rights organization. Now it's using its muscle to support and defend the state of Israel, decreeing that any criticism of Israel or its murderous policies is "antisemitic."
Eran also explains the U.S. military's procedure in giving away "surplus" tanks, bombs, drones, weapons systems, heavy riot gear, etc., to local police departments. (They must actually use it within a year, or it goes back.)
