interviews Bruce Gagnon from the Global Network

Feb. 10, 2019, 5:03 p.m.
Latin Waves host Sylvia Richardson interviews Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and publisher of a blog called Organizing Notes. They speak about how the US is risking international security by pulling out of nuclear treaties, how this happened under Bush and is now intensifying under the Trump administration. How these policies not only put ourselves at risk of endless wars but also rob the treasury of much needed money for social programs and large visionary projects like the New Green Deal. Every tax dollar that gets spent on the military industrial project is one less dollar for social betterment programs.

Cato, Letter No. 7

Feb. 10, 2019, 7:29 a.m.
Cato's final Letter No. 7 mentions the Senate's close ties to the Presidency; that conflicts of interest will rear their heads, and render impotent any checks and balances applying to treaties and impeachments. Cato is also concerned that the new Congress will have control over the circumstances of their own elections. As a result of this, through manipulation, there will be limits to its subserviency to the people. Cato provides historical examples of the dangers of fully enabling politicians and bureaucrats to positions of authority. He warns that caution should be the rule when entrusting any government with power. Cato is concerned that the new government will travel down a similar road in time, and asks his countrymen to consider the implications.

The effects include the degradation of our culture, economy, politics, and freedom--and of the planet's ecosystem. As Hedges sees it, the only sane response is concerted nonviolent resistance

The Ominous Parallels - 5

Feb. 8, 2019, 4:35 p.m.
Political parties and ideologies collide and collude to form the “New Germany.” The German mentality rejected intellectual analysis and the plodding debates of individuals that characterized parliamentary government. Instead, it demanded organic unity and a state embodying the principal of authority. It rejected all talk of rights as mere Western selfishness. What it cherished was duty and self-sacrifice for The Fatherland. Values such as faith, family and the need for church schools were promoted to guide the young and to immunize them against evils of radicalism. The 1909 elections at the Weimar convention envisioned a New Republic that would represent a sort of compromised peace between Capitalism and Socialism, which meant the acceptance of individual rights and a powerful state, one strong enough to ensure that citizens exercised their rights in the service of the community. It meant the sanctity of private property and the socialization of monopolies It meant the rejection of egalitarianism and a large-scale redistribution of income to benefit the poor. Sounded great, didn't it?

No to U.S. Orchestrated Coup in Venezuela!

Feb. 8, 2019, 2:08 p.m.
No to U.S. Orchestrated Coup in Venezuela! No to Trump Imbuing Himself with the Power to Decide the Leader of a Sovereign Country! WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS? with Marc Weisbrot, is co-director with Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research and is President of Just Foreign Policy, a non-governmental organization dedicated to reforming United States foreign policy. and Kevin Zeese, a lawyer and political activist who has worked on a wide range of issues beginning with ending the war on drugs and mass incarceration, including helping to organize the 2011 Occupy encampment in Washington, DC at Freedom Plaza. He currently serves as co-director of Popular Resistance. "There is a great provocation led by the U.S. empire now in Venezuela. There's no doubt in the world that it's President Donald Trump who wants to impose a de factro, unconstitutional government. It's a coup in Venezuela against the people and democracy" said duly elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro So far only a handful of them--Senator Sanders and Representatives Khanna, Gabbard, Ocasio-Cortez, Lee, and Omar"have spoken out against Trumps policy, and some--such as Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Adam Schiff"have actually supported Trump. We need to send an urgent message now to the Democrats in Congress telling them to speak out against the U.S. orchestration of a coup in Venezuela. The U.S. has a long and sordid history of supporting coups in Latin America and they always turned out horrible for the people: Guatemala in 53, Chile in 73, and Honduras today. The U.S. has been trying to overthrow the Maduro government in Venezuela for years (hint: Venezuela has the worlds largest oil reserves). Our experts dissect the role of the U.S. as architect of economic sanctions that have devastated the country's economy, creating a humanitarian crisis of food and medicine shortages, widespread poverty, and mass migration. The coup attempt must be condemned, and U.S. interventions for regime change in sovereign countries categorically rejected.

Who Guards the Guardians? Newsguard, the Integrity Initiative & Other Threats to Independent Press

Feb. 8, 2019, 1:12 p.m.
This week's Global Research News Hour investigates some of the post 2016 mechanisms being implemented to restrict dissident news and analysis in the name of fighting fake news and 'foreign interference' in political affairs. Whitney Webb, author of a major expose on a neocon backed 'news rating agency' called Newsguard comes in to provide background on why independent media sites should be concerned about this organization. Our next guest, Patrick Henningsen, geopolitical analyst and founder of 21st Century Wire, expands on this 'Fake News Patrol' Trojan Horse by discussing social media partnerships with less than wholesome entities like the Atlantic Council, introduces listeners to something called the Integrity Initiative headquartered in Great Britain which continues the mission of protecting democratic processes from Russian influence, and points to the hazards he sees in a Canadian government initiative proposing to protect elections from foreign (Russian) meddling.
