Michael Lynk - Annexation in the Air

Jan. 23, 2019, 5:56 p.m.
Professor Michael Lynk describes how the Israeli occupation of West Bank and its total blockade of Gaza has caused terrible conditions for Palestinians in these areas. Israel's occupation does not meet the legal obligations of occupying countries in terms of its decades-long duration, and persistent violation of human rights. Further, Israel's planned eventual annexation of the occupied territories and its de facto annexation of Jerusalem are forbidden under international law. Professor Lynk will be speaking on these issues in Hamilton on January 31 at McMaster University at 12:30pm noon (room TBA) and at Barton Stone/Mount Hope United Church at 21 Stone Church Rd. at 7:00pm. See hcsw.ca for details.

Coleen Rowley on Mueller, Comey and Russiagate

Jan. 23, 2019, 1:09 p.m.
Rowley began the interview with comments from her June 6, 2017 article for Huff Post and Consortium News, "No, James Comey and Robert Mueller Aren't Heroes," exposing information about them that the liberal media has tried to bury in its pursuit of Trump, such as Mueller's behavior post-911 after downplaying intelligence submitted to the FBI before the attacks and his silence over Cheney's successful efforts to link Saddam Hussein to 911 despite knowing it was false, leading 70% of the public to believe that was true and justification for the war. Rowley points out than one of the major problems in Washington is that of the “revolving doors” through which key government officials go and in and out jobs in the private sector, most of which have connections to the arms industry and that this applies to both Mueller and Comey, the latter having been a senior official at Lockheed Martin, it wouldn’t have chosen Mueller, the consummate insider. In two years of his investigations and indictments, she points out, nothing has been proven linking the Russians to Trump’s victory. The election of Trump, she points out, has turned everything upside down with the liberals who once could be counted on to be antiwar are the most hawkish now, for example, in Syria, while the majority of Republicans seem less so, with the notable exception of the “Never Trumpers,” such as Lindsay Graham, Marco Rubio, and the neocons tied to the Military-Industrial Complex like Bolton who have been able to infiltrate the Trump White House, She attributes that largely to party loyalty and partisanship on the part of Trump’s base which remains reluctant to get involved in foreign entanglements such as Syria and has backed his criticism of NATO and the UN, and US involvement in both organizations. Rowley points a finger at the media for much of the country’s problems and divisions since, in its race for viewership, listenership, and readership and the profits the most outrageous produce, it produces unsubstantiated stories like Paul Manafort’s alleged visits to Julian Assange and Trump having told Cohen to lie to the Mueller investigation and more recently, the incident at the Lincoln Memorial which appeared in the media, totally distorted, before all the facts were known. How Americans relate to that story will depend on their perspectives to begin with but it clearly exacerbates the divisions within the country that can’t be blamed on the Russians. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/conflicts-of-interest-and-ethics-robert-mueller-and_us_5936a148e4b033940169cdc8

Jeff Blankfort:News/Op:US:The Serial Sovereignty Violator

Jan. 23, 2019, 1:02 p.m.
I begin by regretting the absence of a Swift, Carroll, or Twain to write about these times and go from that to describing the hypocrisy and amnesia that pervades the US exemplified by the failure of the media to mention the interference of both Democrats and Republicans in th3 1996 re-election campaign of Russian president Boris Yeltsin. I mention the Mueller investigation, ostensibly intended to expose Russian interference, having resulted in 18 convictions, none of which had to do with influencing the election of Trump and that the indictment of 14 Russians as the hackers of the DNC and Podesta emails will never be challenged in any court and was shaky from the get-go. I go from there to citing Bill Clinton insider Dick Morris's description of his role in Clinton's efforts to make sure Yeltsin was re-elected as Russia's president in 1996, credit for which was also claimed by Republican operatives in Time of that year which made it their cover story with Yeltsin's image on the cover with an American flag lapel. I then briefly examine the interventions by the US in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras that have been the primary cause of immigrants from those countries seeking asylum on our borders and conclude with a report of this weekend's exchange of missile fire between Israel and Syria, foreshadowing another a broader war with Iran which is Washington (and Israel's) goal.

Joseph Brodsky- A Book of Poems Next to Every Bible

Jan. 22, 2019, 9:06 p.m.
A Part of Speech, Less Than One, To Urania, Marbles, & Watermark Joseph Brodsky, a winner of the Noble Prize, was the United States National Poet Laureate in 1991. Born in what was then Leningrad, Soviet Union, he grew up in a communal apartment, and was very active in language and literary pursuits. In 1963, a Leningrad newspaper denounced Brodsky, calling his poetry pornographic and anti-Soviet. He was interrogated and twice put in mental institutions. His papers were seized. He was arrested and indicted on the charge of parasitism. In a secret trial, he was called a “pseudo-poet in velveteen trousers,” who failed to fulfill his “constitutional duty to work honestly for the good of the motherland.” Yet no fault was found in the content of his poetry. One of the more interesting comments Joseph Brodsky made as a guest was that there should be a book of poetry in every hotel room, right next to the Bible. He said that he didn’t think that the telephone book would mind. Joseph Brodsky died on January 28th of 1996, a world-class poet. Originally Broadcast: November 18, 1991

The Military's Big 'Carbon Footprint'

Jan. 22, 2019, 7:32 p.m.
We interview Tamara Lorincz, of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace. Tamara is a PhD student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ontario, where she focuses on the impacts on the environment and on climate change of the world's military forces, especially the US military, which has the largest single carbon footprint in the world. She notes the climate change protocols signed at the Paris climate talks exempt the carbon contributions caused by the armed forces of all countries from being counted in calculations of global CO2 production. Tamara also strongly opposes the role of the Canadian government in the illegal war against Syria.

WildAid CEO Peter Knights

Jan. 22, 2019, 4:13 p.m.
Have you ever seen one of those ads with a celebrity like Jackie Chan or Leonardo DiCaprio beside a beautiful, rare animal? If so, there’s a good chance it was promoting a WildAid campaign. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with the CEO of WildAid, Peter Knights, about the organization’s mission to protect endangered species. We explore the challenges of trying to globally ban the trade of ivory, discuss the methods they use to curb the demand for rare animals (particularly in China), and hear an update on the status of the totoaba, a rare fish whose bladder is sometimes referred to as “aquatic cocaine” because of the astronomical price it fetches on the black market.

Mary Oliver

Jan. 22, 2019, 12:28 p.m.
When the poet Mary Oliver passed in her 83rd year on January 17, 2019, the huge response revealed her as one of the most popular writers of our time. That despite her refusal to be famous or rich, and the rare interviews she gave. She wanted her poems to speak for themselves and came up with titles such as Owls and Other Fantasies, The Leaf and the Cloud, Wild Geese and the Truro Bear. A dear friend wrote to me: “I can’t think of a contemporary poet who better than Oliver expresses such depth of feeling and thought about the natural world, and what it is to experience earth as an animal in the web of life. And I like the fact that her work is accessible and has reached a large audience.” Mary Oliver’s poems arrived where I now live on the edge of a meadow in Oak and Madrone woodlands in Northern California, as I am trying to read and understand the unprecedented changes of the last 20 years in the ecology around me. Mary Oliver gave two of her rare readings at the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They are a family foundation dedicated to support contemporary artists and writers, and rural indigenous communities. Among the poems Mary Oliver is hears reading on this program are: The Fish, Wild Geese, One-hundred White Sided Dolphins on a Summer Day, I Found a Dead Fox, and Who made the world? Her many immensely popular books include: Red Bird, A Thousand Mornings, Dog Songs, and Blue Horses.
