Pollster Khalil Shikaki on Measuring public opinion in both Palestine and Israel as it relates to the peace process

Jan. 21, 2019, 1:36 p.m.
Today we hear a presentation by social scientist and pollster Khalil Shikaki. He is professor of Political Science and director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah, Palestine. Since 2005 he has also been a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. This Week In Palestine recorded this presentation at Harvard University. For over 25 years he has been measuring public opinion in both Palestine and Israel, especially as it relates to the peace process, with a focus lately on opinion concerning the so-called two-state solution. This is a power point presentation which puts us, as radio audience, at a bit of disadvantage. But his research findings are clearly articulated, making our audio recording relevant for broadcast. Though nominally Palestinian, Shikaki does not advocate justice for Palestinians. He observes that the "two sides" currently disagree, as demonstrated by his group's opinion polls, not mentioning the oppressor-oppressed relationship. Then he presents the hypothesis that this disagreement can be "solved" by positing the now-impossible "two-state solution" and adding sufficient additional provisions to gradually change enough opinions and thus achieve majority support from "both sides." He also assumes that each "side" would honor the agreement fully and equally! Early on, he dismissed the views of the allegedly measured minority who want one democratic state. Despite all of his distinguished titles, a question arises about Shikaki's bona fides. At least one of us here at Truth and Justice Radio views him as a charlatan and turncoat, which is not unusual in the Harvard environment.

Jan. 20, 2019, 8:19 p.m.
Today we have for you a program recorded at Harvard Law School exclusively for This Week In Palestine. It is an exploration of international law as it relates to the US/Israel occupation of Palestine. Of course international law applies to all signatory countries, although the US and Israel, when they decide that the law should not apply to them, have no problem flouting it, about which you will soon hear. The speaker is Jamil Dakwar of the ACLU, introduced at a student sponsored event at the Harvard Law School.

Your Life is Their Toy - Part 19

Jan. 20, 2019, 11:06 a.m.
Health and life are man's most precious possessions; and anxiety to preserve them is natural. It is not surprising, therefore, that they have been exploited since time immemorial. Every age has had its charlatans, quacks and medicine men. Much in the same measure as social organization has attained its highest pitch in the present era, the exploitation of health and life today has reached its zenith. Never before in history has there arisen such an extensive conspiracy about the problem of public health of entire nations, involving well-organized, opposing political and commercial groups. The consequence of this welter of exploitation is the sacrifice of human comfort, happiness, health and life. --Emanuel Josephson, 1941, "Your Life is Their Toy."
