Phantasms of Freedom, Part 5

Feb. 27, 2019, 9:55 a.m.
How well do we know the history of our nation? As for our Founders, what is fact? What is myth? While we have been told we are free, we face an increasing onslaught of laws, edicts, and proclamations governing our lives as American citizens. We have been told that “we need to get our Constitution back.” Do we truly need to do that? We are, during every election cycle, given a “choice.” But is it a real choice? Or a Hobson’s choice? Were our Founders the godlike, towering figures we were taught? Were they above reproach? Or were they human beings, subject to the same avarice, temptations and lust we all are? What were their motivations in starting this country? Were they benign in nature, inspired to offer their fellow countrymen “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?” Or were there other instincts at play? Was the Constitution truly designed to be the bulwark of freedom? Why were the Articles of Confederation jettisoned? Who were the Anti-Federalists? Why did they get such short shrift by history? What was the worth of the Founders? Were they Everymen? Or rich elites? The answers, when explored from an “unofficial” vantage point, may surprise you. Listen along as Eric the Blacksmith discusses American history with Al Aric and Theo. Explore the nooks and crannies of suppressed information as the book “Hologram of Liberty” by Kenneth Royce is reviewed and its bibliography examined.

Your Life is Their Toy - Final

Feb. 27, 2019, 6:46 a.m.
Health and life are man's most precious possessions; and anxiety to preserve them is natural. It is not surprising, therefore, that they have been exploited since time immemorial. Every age has had its charlatans, quacks and medicine men. Much in the same measure as social organization has attained its highest pitch in the present era, the exploitation of health and life today has reached its zenith. Never before in history has there arisen such an extensive conspiracy about the problem of public health of entire nations, involving well-organized, opposing political and commercial groups. The consequence of this welter of exploitation is the sacrifice of human comfort, happiness, health and life. --Emanuel Josephson, 1941, "Your Life is Their Toy."

Kevin Anderson: Talk to the Oxford Climate Society, ONE of TWO

Feb. 26, 2019, 7:01 p.m.
On Jan 25, 2019, Professor Kevin Anderson, the chair of energy and climate change at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) at the University of Manchester spoke at the Oxford Climate Society. He is one of the rare academics with a background in mechanical engineering even worked on oil platforms as a young man. I addition to producing peer reviewed research he engages with European governments on issues ranging from shale gas, aviation and shipping. He also brings a strong sense of justice and equity into his recommendations on how to prevent climate chaos. He said that it's twenty-eight years since the IPCC’s first report on climate change and over a quarter of a century since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Now, in 2019, and with the benefit of hindsight, we can trace our voyage of abject failure – and with humility learn lessons for charting an alternative low-carbon course. Kevin Anderson also said we need to explore how academia has abdicated its responsibility to hold government to account, choosing instead to be complicit in maintaining a facade of mitigation

Home Is Where The Heart Is: Tiny Houses and Homelessness

Feb. 26, 2019, 4:52 p.m.
Shelter is on the first rung of renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow‘s hierarchy of needs. And yet, as a society, we have not cracked the code for how to house people in a way that is equitable and sustainable. While millions consume cubic acres of carbon heating and cooling their McMansions, others combat housing insecurity on a daily basis. This week on Sea Change Radio, we discuss two different facets of the housing puzzle. First we take a look at the tiny homes movement with two builders, Fatih and Deniz Saat. They describe what the target customer base is for their Lilliputian locales, their design inspiration, and how these itty bitty domiciles could potentially transform communities of the future. Next, we hear from San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman to learn about his unique journey into politics and to talk about the issue of homelessness in America.

Woodbine, Onaje Ph.D. — Black Gods of the Asphalt Part Two

Feb. 26, 2019, 3:54 p.m.
The transcendent experience of street basketball is the topic of two conversations with Onaje X. O. Woodbine, author of “Black Gods of the Asphalt: Religion, Hip-Hop, and Street Basketball.” Woodbine grew up in the inner-city of Roxbury, Massachusetts, became a skilled street basketball player and attended Yale University on a basketball scholarship. After two years as a star player on the Yale team, he chose a different life path and quit. After graduating from Yale, Woodbine earned his Ph.D. in religious studies from Boston University. His book, “Black Gods of the Asphalt” presents a social-anthropological view of this inner-city sport where coaches often assume the role of father, mentor and friend. He contrasts the lessons learned on the street basketball courts, with those learned at the predominantly white basketball courts and locker rooms of Yale University. Onaje Woodbine visited with Radio Curious by phone on August 13, 2016, from his home in Andover, Massachusetts. In part one we discussed his experiences growing up and playing on the basketball courts in the inner city and how that differend from the Ivy League schools he later went to. In part two, we began our conversation when I asked him to explain the ethnographic research and methods he used in making his book, “Black Gods of the Asphalt.” The book Dr. Onaje Woodbine recommends is “Jesus and the Disinherited” by Howard Thurman.

Feb. 26, 2019, 10:43 a.m.

Any questioning or assertion of facts by unauthorized individuals or organizations draws the wrath of the RPF authorities. Mr. Mbonyumutwa and others are challenging the bullies through the justice system and demanding respect for their rights.
