#573 -- Robert Fisk and Chris Hedges

Feb. 23, 2019, 8:09 p.m.
In separate talks, two fine journalists discuss current affairs--ROBERT FISK and CHRIS HEDGES. Different in style, they are alike in their hatred of lies and propaganda, their command of recent history--and their disdain for Trump's presidency. Fisk discusses the war in Syria, Iran, Putin, Trump, and the flood of propaganda in the media. Hedges discusses how social justice requires economic justice and also effective means of nonviolently overturning established power. Plus a song by Yikes McGee.

Former IDF soldier Eran Efrati speaks out on policing and the Deadly Exchange program

Feb. 22, 2019, 8:57 p.m.
Eran Efrati reports that he left the IDF because he objected to what it does. He spoke in great detail recently in Boston on policing and the U.S.-Israel Deadly Exchange. The Deadly Exchange consists of American and Israeli police visiting each others' countries, all expenses paid, nominally by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other captured but supposedly respectable NGOs, but ultimately borne by U.S. taxpayers, to learn their counterparts' "best practices" and "up-to-the-minute security measures." That's why we're seeing more military weapons, more surveillance, more "terrorist" rhetoric, and more fascism from the cops whose job is to protect us. ADL's involvement appears designed to earn the approval of those who haven't yet learned that ADL was taken over by the Israel-can-do-no-wrong claque. It's no longer a Jewish-oriented civil rights organization. Now it's using its muscle to support and defend the state of Israel, decreeing that any criticism of Israel or its murderous policies is "antisemitic." Eran also explains the U.S. military's procedure in giving away "surplus" tanks, bombs, drones, weapons systems, heavy riot gear, etc., to local police departments. (They must actually use it within a year, or it goes back.)

The Politics of Immigration

Feb. 22, 2019, 7:01 a.m.
The Politics of Immigration with Jane Guskin and David L. Wilson have been writing since 1990 about immigration, labor, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Their articles have appeared in Truthout, NACLA Report on the Americas, MRZine, The Huffington Post, and other publications. For over twenty years, they co-edited Weekly News Update on the Americas, an English-language bulletin covering grassroots news from Latin America. Guskin also edited a companion publication, Immigration News Briefs. The Politics of Immigration authors brilliantly interrogate this urgent subject that defines our time. Guskin and Wilson ask and answer dozens of crucial questions roiling the nation, ranging from why do people migrate and what are their impacts on U.S. society, to what are the contours of U.S. immigration law and what should a sensible 21st century policy look like. We desperately need to put aside false information about immigrants, to see them as we see ourselves with honesty and compassion. Guskin and Wilson give powerful meaning to the slogan No Human Being is Illegal. Guskin and Wilson will talk about why are people in other countries leaving their homes and coming here? What does it mean to be illegal? How do immigration raids, prisons, and border walls impact communities? Who suffers and who profits from our current system"and what would happen if we transformed it? Well go beyond soundbites to tackle these concerns to provide effective tools to confront current stereotypes and disinformation

Sonic Cafe #126/Try Our Burma Shave Smoothies

Feb. 21, 2019, 8:41 a.m.
Sonic Café. That’s music from Dave Porter pulled from the Better Call Saul soundtrack. So how you doing? I’m Scott Clark, welcome to episode 126 of the Sonic Café. This time we pull our music mix from 12 genres, including one we call Burma Shave. Now Burma Shave may sound a bit unusual, but we feel it’s the only genre that comes close to classifying the music of Tom Waits. So listen for Tom, plus Robert Palmer, Fitz & the Tantrums, Concrete Blondes, Led Zeppelin, Bob Welch and more. Then later the Sonic Café presents British funny man Jimmy Carr, captured from a gig in Montreal. Jimmy hits us with a rapid-fire barrage of one-liners in a very tight set. I counted 20 in all. So hold on for that. And finally, the Sonic Café welcomes our newest sponsor. Listen for a word from Shady Acres, an exclusive condo development just for divorced, rich people… live like a one-percenter, come to Shady Acres. All that and ahh some other stuff too. So crank up the volume and enjoy the ride from that little café on the Pacific coast, where we feature 2 for 1 Burma Shave smoothies, each day, during happy hour. We’re the Sonic Café.

Sting performed scenes from the award-winning musical, "The Last Ship," for Oshawa GM workers. A great deal can be learned from the spirit and tactics of the shipbuilders, whom Sting knows so well.
