Each broadcast of Radio Thrift Shop features an improvised playlist from DJ Frederick's music library.

Democracy in America
In 1831, a 25 year-old Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, trained as a lawyer, and preoccupied with democracy, came to the US to study this new political scheme. Alexis de Tocqueville and his traveling companion, Gustave de Beaumont, arrived at Newport, RI, in an America comprised, then, of 23 states and 13 million people. They stayed for nine months, and then returned to France at which time de Tocqueville began his epic poem entitled âDemocracy in America.â At a time then when slavery was an economic base in the South, and abolitionism was beginning to thrive in the North, America had three frontiers: geography, industry, and democracy. In this program of Radio Curious, weâll be talking with Alexis De Tocqueville, through the person of Chautauqua scholar, Dick Johnson.

Rupert Read - This Civilization is Finished: So what is to be done? TWOof TWO

In October 2019 the global movement of Extinction Rebellion, that started in the UK, will be one year young. They credit the experiences of Gandhi, the US Civil Rights Movement the School Strikes of High school students and carefully designed their goals and strategy. On their web site <rebellion.earth> they say that âWe are facing an unprecedented global climate emergency. The government has failed to protect us. and we are using civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance to protest against climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse.â
One of their strategies is for speakers, such as Rupert Read, to travel across the country and lay out the science of climate change and what role people can assume to prevent or mitigate climate disaster.
In part one of his talk Rupert Read explained why in his opinion the Paris Climate Agreement is already failing - in spite of the extraordinary fact that all but one country, the US, are part of it. Rupert Read continues the list of actions we can take now, among them: Deep adaptation - Holding Action and Rebellion. At all Extinction Rebellion lectures and town halls there is much time set aside for discussion and Q and A. This program includes some of them.
Rupert Read was recorded at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, UK, on Nov. 7, 2018. He is teaching philosophy at the University of East Anglia, UK and he is a long time Green Party politician. His most recent book is: This Civilization is Finished, Conversations on the end of Empire - and what lies beyond. It is a conversation between Rupert Read and Samuel Alexander - with a postscript by Helena Norberg Hodge.

As summer draws to a close this week on Sea Change Radio, we take a dip into the archives. First, we speak to Ian Power, an assistant professor at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, who is working on a breakthrough in manufacturing a CO2-absorbing mineral called magnesite in a fraction of the time that it forms in nature. We discuss his teamâs research, learn about the methods they used, and talk about this unusual mineralâs potential to fight climate change. Then, we hear from Kendra Ulrich, a Senior Shipping Campaigner at Stand about the downsides of the cruise industry. Ulrich tells us about the hazards presented by enormous cruise ships that float into some of the planetâs most fragile ecosystems, the diesel fumes that harm the lungs of the shipâs crew and passengers, and the greenwashing that the cruise-lines have used in response to allegations of environmental irresponsibility.

Dr Aviva Chomsky is a professor and the coordinator of Latin American Studies at Salem State College. She has previously been a professor at Bates College and a faculty research associate at Harvard University, specializing in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. The eldest daughter of linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky, she has a longstanding interest in Latin American cultures and histories which she traces to the year she spent working for the United Farm Workers union in 1976-77. Her six books and many articles explore, among other questions, the history of immigration, labor, globalization, and social mobilization in Latin America and in the United States.
She speaks to us about her âHer latest book They Take Our Jobs and 20 Other Myths about Immigration, she dismantles common assumptions and beliefs underlying statements like Iâm not against immigration, only illegal immigration
