Frank Chapman on the Movement for Community Control of Policing

Oct. 28, 2018, 7:42 p.m.
Frank Chapman, activist and author, Field Organizer for the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) was invited to speak to the Northside Friends following their Sunday service on issues of police violence, the movement for civilian control over policing in Chicago and the unique political moment; grass roots organizing having forced the indictment, trial and conviction of CPD officer Jason Van Dyke for the murder of Laquan McDonald. He speaks of what brought him into a life long fight for justice against white supremacy and structural racism in the United States, embodied in the impunity with which police brutalize and murder African-Americans, Latinos and poor people. From his own experience he speaks of what a movement, "the people", can accomplish. And what it means in this moment when for the first time a white policeman has been convicted of second degree murder and sixteen counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, while on duty, for what in deed was the execution of a black child and that, but for the video and its release to the public 400 some days following the shooting, officials maintained was "justified". Stop Police Crimes, SPC, is a project of Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR). Frank's upcoming book, “A Marxist-Leninist Perspective on the Struggle for Socialism and Black Liberation.”, examines the history of Black People organizing and focuses on the mass movements that are going on right now related to Black Liberation, CPAC, and the recent murder trial of Jason Van Dyke, the former Chicago cop that killed Laquan McDonald.

Episode 2018.10. The Circle Doesn't Break Because Life Continues On and On and On

Oct. 28, 2018, 3:29 p.m.
Hostile takeovers lead to our current economic woes. This probably should be a topic I broach next year again, but for now it is just a side piece for a longer talk on a spiritual truth that keeps our national problems reproducing themselves or more appropriately, reincarnating themselves. This will be an episode that reaches deep into your psyche, challenging everything you hold dear, it did for me. I’ve wanted to produce this podcast for a little over a year now, but the ideas just wouldn’t gel, that is until today. interviews Jorge Marti, secretariat of Hands off Venezuela

Oct. 28, 2018, 2:18 p.m.
A Caravan of young women and men, children of all ages is moving from Honduras to the USA marking one historical site of resistance, amidst many sites of resistance against a mounting tide of authoritarian neoliberalism. In this interview with Jorge Marti, secretariat of Hands off Venezuela talks about the election in Brazil, the talks of war against Venezuela if the radical right wing gets elected in Brazil. The incarceration of Lula as a tactic to prevent him from running as leader of the workers' party...Jorge makes clear why we can not make revolution half way, why we must have a program to eradicate the violence of neoliberal capitalism, by eradicating capitalism. The kidnapping of mass discontent by the far right, as they sweep into power its root causes. Why understanding theory is essential to succeed in class struggles that awaken inevitably with the rise of radical right wing governments. This is a time for progressives to be active and engaged. Tune in and attune to the history of resistance, the victories and struggles that have birthed our ideas of democracy and continue to sustain our hope for a better tomorrow for all beings.

#556 -- Human Resources, Part 3

Oct. 27, 2018, 12:33 p.m.
Scott Noble's wide-ranging and fine documentary film of 2010. It's about the many attempts--some fairly successful--to reduce human beings to mere "cogs in the machine"--in order to further increase the wealth and power of the elite. This week's installment shows psychology's "frustration-aggression" principle used as a means of social control. One predictable result of the human frustration "The System" creates is mass murder--as shown in the case of James Huberty. (Continued under "Credits.")

A couple weeks ago Max broke a story about the Canadian Pension Plan's investments in private prisons in the US. We talked to him about that story, about ethical investing, and about where else the CPP is putting their money. Then our interview with Helen from The Certain Days Freedom for Political Prisoners Calendar project. Great project and a great interview. Website for Certain Days: certaindays.org Mailing address for Certain Days: Certain Days c/o QPIRG Concordia 1455 de Maisonneuve West Montreal, Quebec H3G 1M8 Places to buy The Certain Days Calendar in Montreal: Insoumise bookstore; Concordia COOP bookstore; Le Frigo Vert; QPIRG Concordia; Euguelionne Feminist bookstore. Finally, we’ll be airing audio from a demonstration that took place on Sunday October 21 in Montreal against the International Corrections and Prisons Association conference. This conference was hosted by Correctional Services Canada and has been happening all week at the Marriott Hotel on de la Gauchetiere in downtown Montreal. They only know one way to act: build more prisons and have stricter enforcement inside. What's new, hey? This is why we have to keep fighting for prisoners rights. First them, then us, the citizens who stand by and stay silent. Stand up and DO SOMETHING!

Rev. Barber & Al Gore Say Ecological Devastation is Immoral

Oct. 26, 2018, 9:25 a.m.
Ecological Devastation is Immoral with The Rev. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, architect of the Moral Monday protest movement, and Repairers of the Breach, his most recent books include Forward Together: A Moral Message for the Nation and The Third Reconstruction: Moral Mondays, Fusion Politics and the Rise of a New Justice Movement. and Former Vice President Al Gore, currently Chairman of the Climate Reality Project. Author of "An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It" Were heading to Belews Lake, North Carolina, right beside the Duke Energy plant, its smoke stakes spewing coal ash amidst this otherwise bucolic landscape, where we listened to former Vice President Al Gore brought there by the Rev. Dr. William Barber and his Poor Peoples Campaign to highlight one of the four pillars of the Poor Peoples Campaign - ecological devastation that is inextricably linked to the perpetuation of poverty. Earlier this year Rev. Barber announced an effort by faith and moral leaders to carry forward Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s dream of a Poor Peoples Campaign, working across the country to alleviate the triad forces of poverty, militarism, and racism that Dr. King knew were poisoning the country then and still threaten us today. Rev. William Barber noted, the battle for civil rights and the battle for economic rights are two wings of the same word.
