The Taxcast: October 2018

Oct. 25, 2018, 10:11 a.m.
we speak to Nicholas Shaxson about his new book The Finance Curse: How Global Finance Is Making Us All Poorer released alongside new research from the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute on the true costs of the City of London’s oversized finance sector to the British economy – £4.5 trillion in lost economic output over a 20 year period – that’s equivalent to £67,500 for every person in the UK, not far off $90,000. This research has serious implications for oversized financial centres everywhere. Also, we discuss the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the hypocrisy of the ‘west’ and corruption of democracy by dark money and national and international security threats not only from Russia, but also from China and, the most overlooked – the United States.

Sonic Cafe #109/Corporations Are People Too

Oct. 25, 2018, 8:30 a.m.
We’re the Sonic Café. Hey welcome, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode one hundred and nine. So do you work to live? Or do you live to work? This time the Sonic Café exams the often complicated, stressful realities we confront in our day-to-day working lives. Once on the clock most of us enter a world of life sucking deadlines, mind numbing meetings and sometimes-questionable ethics. Where the only objective that really matters is the bottom line. And the only person that really matters is the corporation itself. Because after all, corporations are people too, right? And though each job seems to hold such promise at the start, struggles between management and the rank and file often result in a not so pleasant conclusion in the end. Listen as the Sonic Café presents a trio of career ending movie clips from Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, Russell Crowe from the Insider and we’ll listen in as Jimmy quit his one hit wonder gig from That Thing You Do. All that wrapped in an eclectic music mix we’ve pulled from over 40 years including Lee Dorsey, Green Future, the Kaiser Chiefs, Thunderball, The Animals and of course much more. All just ahead, from that little café on the coast where it’s always easy to punch in, but not so easy to punch out, we’re the Sonic Café.

Out of the Woods - Show #447 - 11-3-18

Oct. 25, 2018, 5:08 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

16 Shots and a Cover-Up - Movement for Community Control of Police in Chicago

Oct. 24, 2018, 11:02 a.m.
Press Conference to announce next step in the campaign to end police impunity for killing and brutalizing Black and Latino youth in Chicago. The Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) ordinance would do that. Alderman Rosa announces his plan to force the legislation out of the Public Safety Committee, where it has been bottled up by Mayor Emanuel's minions, to a City Council floor vote by invoking Rule 41. CPAC is a element of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression's campaign in coalition with others to win community control over the Chicago Police Department that, following the murder of Laquan McDonald and its cover up, helped force the release of the video of CPD officer Jason Van Dyke shooting the teen 16 times; caused merchants the loss of a billion dollars of Black Friday sales when it marched on Michigan Avenue to get the attention of Chicago's elites who were too comfortable with the racist status quo; forced Van Dykes indictment for murder where he was found guilty in a jury trial; forced removal of the corrupt former Cook County States Attorney Anita Alverez when she was defeated by Kim Fox; and ended the political career of Mayor Rahm Emanuel in Chicago in part for his attempted cover up of the murder just ahead of his election to a second term. Speakers include SEIU Local 73, Chicago Teachers Union, Mariel Johnson, mother of police torture survivor Michael Johnson, candidates for alderman, community justice activist and a candidate for City Clerk who notes that 20 million dollars in civil judgments against CPD Jason Van Dyke had been authorized by the Mayor and City Council prior to the murder of Laquan McDonald.

IPCC Report October 2018 - Only 12 years left to save ourselves

Oct. 23, 2018, 6:32 p.m.
Even though the October 8, 2018 release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report was meant to jolt humanity into action to bring down carbon dioxide releases within 12 years to avoid global catastrophe - a stunned silence fell upon most of the world media. Two scientists, who have been on TUC Radio before, are imploring us to notice that the IPCC's report is not urgent enough. They are Professor Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Polar Ocean Physics, Cambridge University; and Professor Kevin Anderson from the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research, University of Manchester. My thanks go out to Stuart Scott, with the United Planet Faith and Science Initiative and Amy Goodman of Democracy Now for giving them a voice. First is Professor Peter Wadhams, interviewed by Stuart Scott on October 11, 2018, on the United Planet Faith and Science Initiative. Next is Professor Kevin Anderson, interviewed by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. They spoke on October 9, 2018

Washington Post's Greg Sargent on the American "Uncivil War"

Oct. 23, 2018, 3:15 p.m.
It’s election season. To say that the political atmosphere is polarized understates the wormhole into which the US has fallen. We have a president who tells easily disprovable lies without compunction, and a party of elected officials who line up behind him, drafting off his autocratic slipstream. This week's guest on Sea Change Radio is Greg Sargent, longtime opinion writer for the Washington Post and author of the popular blog, The Plumline. His new book is "An Uncivil War: Taking Back Our Democracy In An Age Of Trumpian Disinformation And Thunderdome Politics." We discuss the mess that is the state of this country's politics, try to understand one party’s justification for voter suppression tactics, and examine the role of the media in shaping our opinions. Then, we dig into the Sea Change Radio archives to hear from political advisers Becky Bond and Zack Exley who remind us of the many things we can all do to pitch in as the election nears.

Your Life is Their Toy - Part 11

Oct. 23, 2018, 1:16 p.m.
Health and life are man's most precious possessions; and anxiety to preserve them is natural. It is not surprising, therefore, that they have been exploited since time immemorial. Every age has had its charlatans, quacks and medicine men. Much in the same measure as social organization has attained its highest pitch in the present era, the exploitation of health and life today has reached its zenith. Never before in history has there arisen such an extensive conspiracy about the problem of public health of entire nations, involving well-organized, opposing political and commercial groups. The consequence of this welter of exploitation is the sacrifice of human comfort, happiness, health and life. --Emanuel Josephson, 1941, "Your Life is Their Toy."
