Hyatt, Chef Chad -- Mushrooms: Selection and Preparation For a Safe and Yummy Meal

Oct. 30, 2018, 2:35 p.m.
Mushrooms-What they are, how to locate them and how to cook them is the topic of this edition of Radio Curious. Our guest is Chef Chad Hyatt, who after leaving a ten year career as an engineer realized that cooking was this true passion, and became a classically trained chef.  As part of this transformation he focused on mushrooms and sought out new techniques and traditional ethnic recipes from all over the world to apply to mushrooms. Chad Hyatt, is the author of “The Mushroom Hunter’s Kitchen.” This book provides over 100 easy to follow detailed mushroom recipes, some of which we discuss in this interview.  And for that reason you might want to be prepared to take notes of some of Hyatt’s comments.  The Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club will present a Mushroom Delight Dinner at the Caspar Community Center on Saturday, November 10, 2018.  Chef Chad Hyatt will be in charge.  For further information go to mendocinocoastmushroomclub.org. When Chef Chad Hyatt and I visited by phone on October 28, 2018, from his home in Santa Clara County, California, we discussed mushrooms, what they are, how to cook them and how to safely forage wild mushrooms.  We began our conversation with a focus on general details of cooking, and started when I asked him to expound on the opening sentence in his book, “Great food is all about the details.” The book Chad Hyatt recommends is “Homage to Catalonia,” by George Orwell, based on Orwell’s experience in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. This program was recorded on October 28, 2018.

Made In The Shade: Erik Hoffner on Agroforestry

Oct. 30, 2018, 1:09 p.m.
Occam’s Razor is a principle that tells us that the simplest solution to a problem tends to be the correct one. Farmers around the world are abiding by this philosophy in droves by practicing agroforesty, an ancient agricultural technique that supports biodiversity while simultaneously sequestering carbon. This week on Sea Change Radio, we learn all about agroforestry from Erik Hoffner, an editor at Mongabay. Hoffner takes a look at examples of agroforestry efforts around the globe, examines recent investments into the sector and shows how it stacks up to large, industrial agricultural systems. As you’ll see, sometimes the best answers are right under our noses the whole time.

White Helmets: A US-UK Propaganda Asset

Oct. 29, 2018, 7:32 p.m.
Rick Sterling has been following the White Helmets from the beginning, when they emerged in the midst of the Syrian conflict. The White Helmets were set up by James Le Mesurier, on a contract with the U.K. government. Their main purpose is PR and propaganda, to demonize the Syrian government and promote Western support for regime change in Syria. The propaganda are lies: White Helmets aren't neutral, and they aren't unarmed. They also called for a "no-fly-zone" in Syria, a prelude to invasion. Now Hollywood has joined in: Turkey and other foreign funders produced a documentary for Netflix. Canada is deeply invested in the group, and is bringing hundreds of them 'home.' This is amazing, considering that Holland has decided to end funding to the White Helmets because they operate in collusion with terrorists, and do not account for the distribution of money. Thankfully, we have people like Rick Sterling and Eva Bartlett to uncover the White Helmets and their myths, like the "Omran" story.

Frank Chapman on the Movement for Community Control of Policing

Oct. 28, 2018, 7:42 p.m.
Frank Chapman, activist and author, Field Organizer for the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) was invited to speak to the Northside Friends following their Sunday service on issues of police violence, the movement for civilian control over policing in Chicago and the unique political moment; grass roots organizing having forced the indictment, trial and conviction of CPD officer Jason Van Dyke for the murder of Laquan McDonald. He speaks of what brought him into a life long fight for justice against white supremacy and structural racism in the United States, embodied in the impunity with which police brutalize and murder African-Americans, Latinos and poor people. From his own experience he speaks of what a movement, "the people", can accomplish. And what it means in this moment when for the first time a white policeman has been convicted of second degree murder and sixteen counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, while on duty, for what in deed was the execution of a black child and that, but for the video and its release to the public 400 some days following the shooting, officials maintained was "justified". Stop Police Crimes, SPC, is a project of Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR). Frank's upcoming book, “A Marxist-Leninist Perspective on the Struggle for Socialism and Black Liberation.”, examines the history of Black People organizing and focuses on the mass movements that are going on right now related to Black Liberation, CPAC, and the recent murder trial of Jason Van Dyke, the former Chicago cop that killed Laquan McDonald.

Episode 2018.10. The Circle Doesn't Break Because Life Continues On and On and On

Oct. 28, 2018, 3:29 p.m.
Hostile takeovers lead to our current economic woes. This probably should be a topic I broach next year again, but for now it is just a side piece for a longer talk on a spiritual truth that keeps our national problems reproducing themselves or more appropriately, reincarnating themselves. This will be an episode that reaches deep into your psyche, challenging everything you hold dear, it did for me. I’ve wanted to produce this podcast for a little over a year now, but the ideas just wouldn’t gel, that is until today. interviews Jorge Marti, secretariat of Hands off Venezuela

Oct. 28, 2018, 2:18 p.m.
A Caravan of young women and men, children of all ages is moving from Honduras to the USA marking one historical site of resistance, amidst many sites of resistance against a mounting tide of authoritarian neoliberalism. In this interview with Jorge Marti, secretariat of Hands off Venezuela talks about the election in Brazil, the talks of war against Venezuela if the radical right wing gets elected in Brazil. The incarceration of Lula as a tactic to prevent him from running as leader of the workers' party...Jorge makes clear why we can not make revolution half way, why we must have a program to eradicate the violence of neoliberal capitalism, by eradicating capitalism. The kidnapping of mass discontent by the far right, as they sweep into power its root causes. Why understanding theory is essential to succeed in class struggles that awaken inevitably with the rise of radical right wing governments. This is a time for progressives to be active and engaged. Tune in and attune to the history of resistance, the victories and struggles that have birthed our ideas of democracy and continue to sustain our hope for a better tomorrow for all beings.

#556 -- Human Resources, Part 3

Oct. 27, 2018, 12:33 p.m.
Scott Noble's wide-ranging and fine documentary film of 2010. It's about the many attempts--some fairly successful--to reduce human beings to mere "cogs in the machine"--in order to further increase the wealth and power of the elite. This week's installment shows psychology's "frustration-aggression" principle used as a means of social control. One predictable result of the human frustration "The System" creates is mass murder--as shown in the case of James Huberty. (Continued under "Credits.")
