The average US resident heads out to the grocery store 1.6 times a week, and over the course of a year uses well over 1,000 plastic shopping bags there - bags which, on average, are used for a mere 15 minutes but will stick around on the earth for hundreds of years. This weekâs guest on Sea Change Radio, Catherine Homsey, is fed up with the status quo and has changed her food shopping habits to better reflect her values. She gives us insight into the plastic habit of food retailers, talks about what to do about it, and tells us of her particular annoyance with Trader Joeâs, the popular grocer that was once her favorite.

The material for this program literally landed on my doorstep with a personal challenge - would TUC radio and you who have listened over time be open to hearing arguments that there is no evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections?
Given the speaker, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who I met and recorded before, beginning with the opposition to the war on Iraq; and given the expertise of the group of colleagues around him, the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, VIPS; and given that this group expressed their doubts about Russian interference already in December of 2016; and given that no major TV or print media have given them a voice - I picked up the challenge and am giving Ray McGovern and his colleagues this space and time and hope that you might find his arguments and evidence as intriguing as I did.
Ray McGovern served as a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the administration of John F. Kennedy to that of George H. W. Bush. His duties included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the Presidentâs Daily Brief to Ronald Reaganâs security advisers from 1981 to 1985.
In January 2003, McGovern co-created Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) to expose how intelligence was being falsified to âjustifyâ war on Iraq. VIPS remains active to this day.

A Fightback is Growing Against GM Plant Closings in US and Canada

GM announced plant closings in the US and Canada this past December. Autoworkers on both sides of the border and their wider communities responded with anger and organized protest. In this New Year, real plans are emerging from the affected plants and their affiliates. Slogans such as, "Seize the Plant, Save the Planet" and "Make Detroit/Oshawa the engine for a green new deal."
The companies have taken drastic, callous steps to protect their profits. Now it is time for workers to think big and take dramatic steps to protect their jobs and improve their wages and conditions. Electric cars, perhaps?

Of course, as Stephen reminds us, the United States always falsified its own 'free-market' success story by hiding the fact the public has paid all the bills for research and development, while turning over the benefits to private companies (who reap the profits). What is looming into view is the superior development model of China, which shares the benefits.

Josh Ruebner, Policy Director at the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, is followed by Lamis Deek, Palestinian civil rights attorney in New York City.
We see this repression in a myriad number of forms. For example, Trump's cutoff of the U.S. share of UNWRA funding; ending bilateral "humanitarian" assistance from AID; closure of the PLO office in Washington DC; transfer of the U.S. Embassy from TelAviv to Jerusalem; and the dissolution of the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem. Ruebner explains why this last slam may be the most significant of all. Ms. Deek expresses her admiration of the Palestinian protesters at the Gaza apartheid fence. They continue protesting in spite of a continuous rain of death-dealing US-made dumdum bullets, all approved by the Trump administration.
But first: Having failed to pass its unconstitutional anti-BDS legislation in the open, the Israel Lobby and its allies in Congress are conniving surreptitiously to have it added to the must-pass congressional omnibus spending bill, where it will get no debate. [Post-show note: it appears that this "must-pass" bill, whether poisoned this way or not, did NOT pass when it "must," thus triggering Trump's notorious government shutdown.]
The ACLU has seen an updated version being considered for inclusion in the spending bill. While Capitol Hill offices claim the First Amendment concerns have been resolved, this is nonsense. Knowingly supporting BDS could result in criminal financial penalties of up to $1 million. Were this legislation to pass and survive review by the new Supreme Court, federal officials would have yet another new weapon at their disposal to chill and punish activity supporting the rights of Palestinians.
