Out of the Woods - Show #419 - 4-21-18

April 12, 2018, 4:47 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Gareth Porter on John Bolton's Plotting War on Iran for Israel

April 11, 2018, 1:06 p.m.
Gareth Porter, author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare (2014) discusses and elaborates on critical issues raised in his 3/22 article on The American Conservative, “The Untold Story of John Bolton's Campaign for War with Iran” which dates back to the war on Iraq in 2003, when, while technically working as undersecretary of state for Colin Powell, he was secretly working for Vice-President Dick Cheney and meeting, against State Dept. rules, with Mossad director, Meir Dagan, to get the US to attack Iran. Porter connects Bolton to the obtaining of a phony cache of material contained on a computer, supposdly exposing an Iranian nuclear weapons program, to the MEK, an Iranian terrorist group that had connections to Mossad. Porter notes the influence of Zionist megabillionaire and major donor to Trump, Sheldon Adelson in getting Bolton into the White House and influence, in general on Trump's Middle East policies. Changing subjects, Porter speaks about the likely false flag episodes in Syria and the UK, noting that he was one of those who exposed the false story of the supposed Syrian sarin gas attack against a Syrian town a year ago, but he made a point of correcting the notion that Def, Sec Mattis was speaking of that attack when in Feb. he said there was no evidence of sarin in another attack. Regarding the declaration and insistence by the UK government that Putin was personally behind an attack with a nerve agent on a former Russian double agent in Salisbury the deadly effects of which turned out to be highly exaggerated, Porter suggests that the attack might have been the work of Mossad that makes good use of conflict in the region.

Jeff Blankfort News/Op: Syrian False Flag? MBS in US, UK False Flag?

April 11, 2018, 12:36 p.m.
I begin by comparing Bolton's going to the White House with shooter Nicholas Cruz being invited to Stoneman Douglas High with his AR-15. After a reference to my later interview with Gareth Porter regarding Bolton, I point out that election of Trump and Syrian war have made terms like left and right and dove and hawk meaningless and point to Fox's Tucker Carlson's questioning whether Syria had used chlorine gas in Douma while Glen Greenwald accepts it and how Carlson points to the strange timing of both attacks, coming just after Assad had received positive news, a year ago that there would be no move to depose him and, just recently, that Trump would pull US troops from Syria. Blankfort cites James Mattis's comment in February, also quoted by Carlson, that there was no evidence that Syria used sarin gas in the attack that elicited a US attack a year ago or that sarin gas was even used at the time. (Note: In the subsequent interview with Porter, he pointed out that Mattis's comment had been misinterpreted and referred, instead, to another attack). I then spoke about the role of the AIPAC spawned pro-Israel think tank, the Wash. Inst. For Near East Policy (TWI) which had been involved from the beginning in backing the Syrian opposition and its creation of the Fikra Forum to engage Arab democrats in efforts to “democratize” region without identifying itself as the source on Fikra's FB page. I then point out the hypocrisy of the United States and its total disregard for the people of Yemen which took the form of leading US moguls and philanthropists, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, Oprah, and four presidents, meeting with Saudi war criminal Mohammad bin Salman on his triumphal tour of the US which made the cover of TIME. I then explore the contradictions in the story of Russia allegedly using a deadly nerve agent to kill an ex-spy in the UK which turned out to be not so deadly and conclude with Israeli officials excusing an Israeli soldier who shot a Palestinian in Gaza who presented no threat while planning to prosecute the soldier who filmed it.

The Empire doubles-down on war in Syria

April 10, 2018, 7:33 p.m.
Phil interviews Rick Sterling of the Syria Solidarity Movement about the liberation of Eastern Ghouta. Sterling debunks the White Helmets' accusation that the Syrian government used chemical weapons in the town of Douma. The White Helmets, and the "Syrian rebels" in general, according to Sterling, are comparable to the Contras created by the USA in the 1980s to overthrow the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua (1979). Currently, he adds that the war-hawks in control of the USA, despite their debacles in Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, seem determined to maintain their illegal occupation of Syria, and are pursuing a policy of confrontation with Russia.

Rev. Leo Woodberry on Climate Justice

April 10, 2018, 7:16 p.m.
How does one cultivate environmental activism in the deepest of red states? Is the current situation in the White House dividing Americans further, or expanding the progressive tent? This week on Sea Change Radio, we discuss these issues and more with the Reverend Leo Woodberry, a nondenominational pastor from South Carolina who is thoroughly committed to fighting climate change. Rev. Woodberry talks about his upcoming ten-state Climate Justice tour, the upsides and downsides of raising awareness of climate change in the South, and the overlap between the Civil Rights and environmental movements as we mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Does the U.S. Support an Apartheid State in Israel? Dr. Virginia Tilley

April 10, 2018, 3:13 p.m.
As this program goes out to broadcast in early April 2018, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have embarked on what they call the "Great March of Return". In their thousands they walk toward the electric fence that has kept 2 million Gaza residents penned in for more than a decade. They plan to sit in a tent-city, until Nakba day, on May 15. That day marks the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe” – when the marchers, their parents or their grandparents, were forced to flee their homes upon the creation of the state of Israel. Israeli soldiers killed 17 Palestinians and wounded more than 1,500 others in the first few days. Analysts on US media such as Democracy Now, as well as noted Israeli journalists call the country an Apartheid state. The same analysis had been made just a month earlier by Dr. Virginia Tilley. She spoke on March 2 ,2018, at the National Press Club in Washington DC at the annual conference organized by the Institute for Research Middle Eastern Policy and the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.
The theme of the conference was: The Israel Lobby And American Policy. Speakers such as human rights attorney Noura Erakat, Haaretz columnist Gideon Levy, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson and many others explored the different ways in which a powerful Lobby for Israel, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, steers the flow of donations, foreign aid and weapons to Israel. They also warned that the Israel Lobby might succeed again in causing the US to launch a war against Israel's perceived enemies in the Middle East. Dr. Virginia Tilley is professor of political science at Southern Illinois University. She has conducted research in Central America, Israel-Palestine, post-apartheid South Africa, and Oceana. Dr. Tilley is also the co-author, with Prof. Richard Falk, of a 2017 report commissioned by the U.N.’s Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia titled “Israeli Practices towards the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid.”
