Indivisible: Sam Ball and Joan Blades on the American Creed

March 6, 2018, 6:16 p.m.
Can't we all just get along? That's the hope of Sam Ball, the director of the new documentary film, American Creed, which tells a story of the American Dream, our nation's patchy history of advocating for equality, and the great red/blue chasm in this country. This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise speaks with Ball, alongside Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn.org, who's featured in the film. American Creed, which aired across the country recently on PBS, was made in partnership with Pulitzer Prize winning historian David M. Kennedy, and former Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice. A wide swath of American voices are amplified in the film, including that of Blades, who talks about the idea behind her latest non-profit startup, Living Room Conversations, and the ambitious concept of getting Americans to actually listen to one another across ideological difference. We discuss the film, look at the problem of polarization in the U.S. and debate the merits of listening to one another in a world where facts, science and math no longer seem to matter to far too many.

Both Syria and North Korea Resist U.S. Hegemony

March 6, 2018, 3:22 p.m.
Despite the Olympic moment, the U.S. is going to pursue its policy of trying to bring regime change in North Korea through intimidation. The U.S. follows the same policy toward Syria. Their propaganda strategy involves wild claims of Korean-Syrian collusion to produce chemical weapons. Western media repeats the allegations. North Korea was founded by patriot guerrilla fighters, who were our allies in the war against Japan. Yet the closest partners of the West today in South Korea were Japan's collaborators. Go figure.

East Ghouta will be liberated like Aleppo

March 5, 2018, 8:42 p.m.
Vanessa Beeley identifies the extremist groups holing up in East Ghouta. They are known, variously, for putting civilians in cages as human shields against airstrikes, firing guided missiles full of bomblets into Damascus, and targeting schoolchildren just as they are leaving schools. It's a replica of what happened in East Aleppo. The same terrorist factions have occupied a city and held civilians as hostages. If Ghouta were a suburb of Toronto, and civilians were being daily massacred and targeted from that suburb, would we tolerate this? Or demand that our government and military forces release the civilians and dislodge the terrorists? Look at Aleppo: After it "fell" to the government, it has been reunited with the country. Everywhere in the city is a hive of activity, as citizens restore their businesses, and put their homes back together. The largest city in Syria is coming back to life, just as Western 'reporters' lost interest in the city. Meanwhile, the crimes that 'rebels' committed against Syrians in Aleppo are ignored. Western NGOs describe Al Qaeda terrorists as feminist freedom fighters, but Syrians know better. And they won't be listening to Western humanitarians ever again. Beeley also dismantles the myths behind the current 'ceasefire.' Al Qaeda and affiliates never agreed to the ceasefire.

Who was Julius Caesar, a dictator or a populist? And who really was Brutus, who murdered him on the Ides of March? A young hero or a participant in a deep seated conspiracy? This intriguing lecture by the noted author, speaker, activist and scholar Michael Parenti provides surprising new insights and parallels to today that are both shocking and amusing. This rebroadcast is part of the very popular series on what Parenti calls Real History, an intriguing reading of a surprisingly large number of all too familiar stories. Parenti spoke about his Pulitzer Price nominated book: The Assassination of Julius Caesar, a people's history of ancient Rome. Rojava, Italy, Brisbane, with Love

March 5, 2018, 3:57 a.m.
In this episode we have two great interviews. One being with Claudio Lucatelli,, an Italian man who fought in Syria. The other with President Donald Trump. We've also got plenty of great music and BAD COP NO DONUT. Claudio is an Italian journalist and media activist. After working in the Middle East he decided to return and join the People’s Protection Unit (YPG) fighting in Rojava against ISIS and others. Also to help the revolution which is building a new autonomous region. Claudio has returned to Italy where he is speaking to us from his home town. In this interview I wanted to ask some basic questions about why he decided to go to Rojava, and how his experience has informed his politics back home in Italy.

#522 -- The Other America

March 4, 2018, 9:29 p.m.
A very good but little-known late speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. "The Other America" was delivered at Stanford University (California) on April 14,1967--10 days after his great (and somewhat better-known) speech, "Beyond Vietnam." Here King goes beyond mere "civil rights" and speaks forcefully on the larger issues of growing economic inequality and an out-of-control Military-Industrial Complex.

Comet Doom - Past And Future?

March 4, 2018, 8:04 p.m.
Did a comet strike the Earth 12,800 years ago, causing global wildfires and an age of cooling? Scientists dispute whether that happened. Dr. Joanne Ballard is a co-author of two new papers with evidence that it did happen. Comet expert Mark Boslough says the science behind this hypothesis is flawed. I close with my own impressions of the science, the believers, and why all this matters a lot for our future. After all, the next comet strike can come at any time. Radio Ecoshock 180307

He was a professor at American University for many years and traveled extensively advising on economic matters all over the world. He is best known for his work on participatory economics with Z Magazine editor Michael Albert. Robin speaks to Latin Waves host Sylvia Richardson about the barriers to change moving forward, how not to repeat the failures of the past and how we as progressives needs to unite under a common program moving forward if we are to beat Trump. How marching forward under the banner of a "New Green Deal" and "Universal Basic Income" could ignite the imagination of the populace in achieving Justice for the people and saving ourselves from catastrophic climate change. We can have 100 percent employment and a clean healthy environment and we have the know how and expertise already to make it happen, our struggle is one with the fossil fuel industry and their political allies.

The securitization of Africa via AFRICOM

March 3, 2018, 9:36 p.m.
McMaster PhD candidate Khaled Al-Kassimi joins the program to discuss his article about the creation of AFRICOM, the U.S. "Africa Command." It clashes with local structures and methods. Khaled argues that the U.S. increasingly views all African affairs through a securitization framework, one that places U.S. agency above African, in line with previous conceptions of U.S. exceptionalism.
