Oscar Lopez Rivera on U.S. Colonialism After Hurricane Maria

March 3, 2018, 4:10 p.m.
Oscar Lopez Rivera on U.S. Colonialism After Hurricane Maria Oscar Lopez Rivera has been called the Nelson Mandela of Puerto Rico. Indeed, like the South African legend, Rivera was imprisoned for his anti-colonial activism and spent decades in prison. But in January 2017, after serving 35 years of his 70-year sentence, President Barack Obama, as one of his last acts in office, commuted Riveras sentence. In May 2017 Oscar Lopez Rivera was a free man. Oscar Lopez Rivera has become a symbol of resistance to people the world over and became one of the longest serving political prisoners in the world. Among those who spoke out for his release were Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Pope Francis, Senator Bernie Sanders, playwright Lin Manuel Miranda and others. Organizers of the 2017 National Puerto Rican Day Parade designated him as the National Freedom Hero. Recently Lopez Rivera sat down with Building Bridges Mimi Rosenberg, to discuss his frustration and anger with the American government, detailing how Puerto Ricans have been treated since the Caribbean island became an unincorporated territory of the United States in 1898. He lamented that Puerto Ricans are still a colonized people 120 years later, Lopez Rivera said, Puerto Ricans didnt ask for citizenship; we didnt want it. Since being colonized, Puerto Ricans havent been treated as humans; we have been marginalized, exploited and used by the United States who wanted our sugar cane and to create military bases. Lopez Rivera said there are two things he knows how to do best- struggle and work. He stated multiple times that he has never advocated any form of violence and this fight for independence must be an act of love. People who love freedom and justice should care about Puerto Rico, Lopez Rivera emphasized. We have the potential to be a free nation, but its up to us. We will struggle and do what needs to be done. Lopez Rivera also spoke at length about Hurricane Maria and the humanitarian crisis taking place. Although it struck September 20, 2017, there are still more than 400,000 people without power. More than 550 residents were killed, and others are still missing. Maria is considered the worst natural disaster to ever strike the area.

TB 180302 Universal Basics

March 1, 2018, 8:03 p.m.
This week’s show starts off with a message from those two beloved All-American cultural icons — and yes — I can only be talking about Britney Spears and Timothy Leary! Then we get lost in time as Big Brother seems to be arriving several decades late. Next, I provide a short update on this radio show itself, and then we describe the “Martha Mitchell Effect” (which is not as crazy as it sounds). Next, we contemplate the nature of whatever it is that is ‘trickling down’ upon us from the 0.1% — and for the feature piece this week we describe the many benefits that would accrue from implementing a concept known as the “Universal Basic Income” [UBI]. That’s not as crazy as it sounds either. Very important information disguised as bad jokes set to crazy music. Only in The Thunderbolt!

Sonic Cafe #76/The Illinois Concert

March 1, 2018, 8:16 a.m.
The evolution of radio continues here at the Sonic Café. I’m your host Scott Clark, welcome to episode 76. That was the Barenaked Ladies with One Week, there hit from 1998. A tune so packed with pop culture references we just had to play here at the Sonic Café where we’re all about pop culture, intelligent, eclectic music and comedy. This time our music mix is pulled from 46 years. Listen for Bowling for Soup, The Whitest Boy Alive, Nirvana, Blossom Dearie, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Byrds and more. Plus comedian Jim Gaffigan explores bowling… which according to Jim, is the only sport that has an ash tray built right into the equipment. So yean, and finally the Sonic Café presents Eric Dolphy on solo bass clarinet playing, God Bless The Child, recorded at a University of Illinois concert in 1963 by the campus radio station. Forgotten for decades, the concert tapes were discovered and finally released on CD in 1999 as The Illinois Concert. We find this fascinating for two reasons. First, that college students we’re digging great jazz like this at the time… and second, because we believe you can never get enough bass clarinet, and wonder how different our world would be today if more people felt the same way. So yeah, all that and more just ahead from that little café in the Pacific Northwest, that brings you the most bass clarinet possible… we’re the Sonic Café.
