Striving to save the soul of Israel, his country: a conversation with human rights attorney Michael Sfard
Feb. 28, 2018, 11:22 a.m.
Again this week we have an original feature presentation that will fill our entire time. Israeli human rights attorney Michael Sfard spoke at the Harvard Hillel Society in Cambridge, and we were there to record it for This Week In Palestine. Sfard is one of those rare attorneys obsessed with a passion to represent those in society being abused by the systemâ¦which in his society is the Palestinians. But he is quick to say that in so doing, he is also striving to save the soul of his country, Israel. Only a just society for everyone is acceptable to him, and that is what he strives to achieve. Michael Sfard is the author of the recently published book, The Wall and The Gate, which examines the ethics and challenges of legal work for human rights. Recounting key cases and issues, Michael Sfard lays bare the reality of the occupation and exposes its surreal legal structures. With emotional force and penetrating analysis, he offers both a moral reckoning with the occupation and a blueprint for a hopeful future.
The presentation is in the form of a conversation with two in the Harvard Community⦠Arthur Applbaum of Harvard's JFK School of Government, and Harvard undergraduate Isabel Slavinsky. Each will ask Michael Sfard questions which will stimulate the conversation. We begin with a question from Professor Applbaum.
Jeff Halper on a framework for a truly democratic, inclusive, one state
Feb. 28, 2018, 10:42 a.m.
Now that the mythical two-state "solution" is clearly dead, Israeli anthropologist and activist, Jeff Halper, co founder of the Israeli Coalition Against House Demolitions, is working with a group of Palestinians and Israelis to develop a possible framework for what a truly democratic, inclusive, one state could look like. He spoke to a group in Bremen, Germany, where he outlined what this unique group has come up with for this new democratic one state vision. Excerpts from this speech are today's feature presentation.
Over the next several months we will continue to follow the efforts of this Palestinian/Israeli working group as they continue to forge a consensus for a way forward in the consideration of a truly democratic, inclusive one state solution.
You too should be involved in this discussion. The status quo is unsustainable, immoral, and destructive beyond measure. While its main victims are Palestinians, it hurts us all. As this show's original founder, the late Sherif Fam, memorably said each week, "Get involved! Get involved!"

Terrorists prolong Ghouta agony
Feb. 28, 2018, 9:56 a.m.
Phil interviews Rick Sterling about the situation in East Ghouta. Rick Sterling describes, from personal experience, the regular targeting of civilians inside Damascus by terrorists who overran East Ghouta, a suburb of that city, in 2013.
Hundreds of Damascenes have been killed by the terrorist bombardment, and Sterling draws a comparison between the hullaballo created by Western corporate media over the liberation of Aleppo in 2016, and East Ghouta today.
Finally, Sterling points out that the current UN ceasefire does not apply to terrorist groups allied to Al Qaeda. Sterling reminds us the the Syrian government practices a policy of reconciliation with Syrian "rebels." Non-Syrian "rebels" were bussed out of Aleppo at the end of the fighting in 2016.
The US is playing a spoiler role in North-East Syria, trying to play off Kurds against Turks. It is preventing Syria from recapturing all of its territory, and drawing out the length of the war.

Michael Parenti: Superpatriotism and the Importance of Being Number One
Feb. 27, 2018, 4:07 p.m.
What does it mean to love one's country? Why is it so important to be number one? In this sharp and funny speech MP dissects the uses of patriotism.
That was the introduction to a Michael Parenti talk given in 1988, at the end of the Reagan administration. That talk became a TUC Radio program and 2004 book published by City Lights. Superpatriotism: How hype, fear, and mindless flag-waving are supplanting informed debate and commitment to democracy.
Now, in 2018, so many years later, slogans such as: America First, America the Greatest Country on Earth are having a powerful come back. Resistance to Superpatriotism - even if it is simply remaining seated or taking a knee during the national anthem at a sports event, can draw a hateful response from those who Parenti was concerned about a generation ago.
Michael Parenti received his PhD in political science from Yale. He is the author of 23 books and many more articles. His works have been translated into eighteen languages.
He grew up in an Italian-American working-class family in NY City. His PhD. from Yale would have guaranteed him a career in academia. He knowingly gave up that chance when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam and was arrested. He decided to become an independent author, lecturer and activist.

Can the Malta Financial Services Authority possibly be âfully equipped and free from conflicts of interest to perform its supervisory dutiesâ?
Tomorrow Never Knows: Daniel Kirk-Davidoff
Feb. 27, 2018, 12:06 p.m.
How far into the future should we be planning when it comes to the environment? 20 years? 100 years? These are vital questions with which scientists, politicians and futurists are grappling, as our icecaps melt and our seas rise. This week on Sea Change Radio, we delve into the moral dilemma policymakers face today with Daniel Kirk-Davidoff, Assistant Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland. The starting point for our conversation is a soon-to-be-published paper comparing the timescale of methane versus CO2 emissions. We touch upon the science of these two greenhouse gasses, examine how long-term environmental planning and short-term planning might conflict, and try to better understand what 100 years really means.
