Rebecca Leber on the Dawn of Solar Protectionism
Jan. 30, 2018, 4:52 p.m.
I don't know about you, but whenever I see a headline that the Trump Administration has made a new announcement, I generally assume that it's bad news before I even read the article. This week on Sea Change Radio we dig deeper into one of those recent headlines, and see how bad the news actually is. The decision to impose a 30% tariff on solar panels and solar cells coming from overseas is a move that leaves most renewable energy advocates apoplectic. While some might point out that imposing the tariff could give an advantage to US-based solar component producers, many believe that the overall impact of this tariff will be to slow the expansion of solar power and to extend our reliance on fossil fuels further into the 21st Century. The Trump Administration points to the news that Chinese solar manufacturer, JinkoSolar, is building an American factory as "proof" that the tariff is the right move. But is this simply a straw-man argument? We discuss the ramifications of the change with Mother Jones environmental reporter Rebecca Leber and delve into the best and worst case scenarios of the policy decision. We also get Leber's insight into the political future of EPA head Scott Pruitt, who is appearing before the Senate this week for an oversight hearing.
Daniel Ellsberg - The Doomsday Machine (ONE of TWO)
Jan. 30, 2018, 2:51 p.m.
Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame has another revelation to make. In 1961 he consulted for the Department of Defense and the White House and drafted Secretary Robert McNamaraâs plans for nuclear war.
In 1969 Ellsberg copied the top secret documents along with those pertaining to the war on Vietnam. Ellsberg's attempts to publish the nuclear war papers were stymied by the loss of his copies and the refusal by 17 publishers who told him that nobody was interested in a book about nuclear war. The Doomsday Machine was finally published in December 2017.
Now, in the context of Trump's threats to North Korea, the question of what it means for the rest of the world if one or more of todays super powerful nuclear weapons were to be used is rising to top priority. Convincing evidence shows that even a small nuclear exchange will instantly kill millions and a larger exchange would endanger the rest of the hemisphere by nuclear winter.
Ellsberg spoke at Town Hall in Seattle on January 9, 2018. He was recorded by Mike McCormick of Talking Stick TV and KEXP radio.

And we discuss what countries can do independently and as regional blocs to defend themselves against the threats to their economies from offshore secrecy jurisdictions.

Jan. 29, 2018, 8:04 p.m.
Jerry Dias, Prez of UNIFOR, has been telling everyone that UNIFOR had to leave the CLC in order to rescue UNITE HERE(Toronto hotel workers) from the clutches of an undemocratic American union.
But he did not provide any evidence to back his case and did not submit the matter to other unions. The Canadian Labor Congress is now going to have reassert the rules and principles for inter-union relations that can protect and promote solidarity.
