Could Trump ditching JCPOA blow back in his face? Be good for Iran?

May 9, 2018, 4:39 p.m.

Hizbollah Won Lebanon Election Because It Resisted Israel, Defended Syria.

May 9, 2018, 4:02 p.m.
Western media is tied in knots trying to explain the political success of Hizbollah. But it is no mystery as Hizbollah has over the years proven able to resist Israeli incursions into Lebanon, and has also stood up to attempts by Saudi Arabia to undermine the democratic order and sovereignty of that country. Zafar reminds that Canada falsified a public statement by Hizbollah leadership to label it a "terrorist" organization. The so-called 'democratic west' should mend its ways.

Sasan Fayazmenash on Trump, Iran, Sanctions and Europe

May 9, 2018, 12:45 p.m.
We begin by discussing Sasan Fayazmenash's response to Trump's scripted departure from the JCPOA, his repetition of the mantra that Iran is the leading sponsor of state terror, pointing out the role of the Saudis and US, saying that Trump mixes truth with lies, e.g., Iran does support Hezbollah and Hamas, but it has never supported Al Qaeda or the Taliban and nearly went to war with the Taliban before 9/11. He speaks about the importance of Trump having replaced McMaster and Tillerson with John Bolton and Mike Pompeo and elaborates on the history of Bolton's activities on Israel's behalf going back to the Iraq wars. He notes that Bolton had spoken before the MEK, the Mujahedeen Khalq, when it was listed as a terrorist organization and that Trump's new lawyer, Rudy Guiliani had done the same. He points out that Netanyahu's “dog and pony show” a week ago designed to prove to the world that Iran was violating the JCPOA was intended for Trump and included nothing new and that much of appeared to be material taken from a computer allegedly discovered shortly after the beginning of the war on Iraq that purported to contain the plans for an Iran nuclear weapon, the story of which has since been discredited. He then examines the likely effect of renewed sanctions, based on what had been in force earlier and the underplayed significance of secondary sanctions against countries and companies that attempt to do business with Iran, pointing to the apparent loss of a $16 billion contract with Boeing to replace Iran's aging passenger plane fleet announced this morning. The same sanctions would apply to efforts of Air Bus to get Iran's business because some of its parts are manufactured in the US. What the Europeans who wish to do business with Iran will decide to do is open to question and even if they wish to seize the opportunities for trading with Tehran are appealing, if having to choose between the US and Iran, which will eventually be the case, they will inevitably be forced to genuflect to Washington. If you think Obama was much better, tune in and also learn that the difference between US relations with North Korea and with Iran is not just because one has nuclear weapons and the other hasn't but because No. Korea is not on the map of Israel's targets.

Jeff Blankfort/NewsOp Trump's Gift to Israel, Big $$$ Zios

May 9, 2018, 12:16 p.m.
I begin my noting that Trump announced US pullout from JCPOA standing in front of portrait of George Washington who warned Americans against “passionate attachments” to foreign countries, pointing out the attachments shown by Trump, his big money backs and Congress for Israel. I mention that Trump begins with familiar mantra that Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism and destabilizer of the region, pointing out that this is nonsense and evidence for Trump's accusations against Iran is either non-existent or flimsy, that much of what he refers to occurred in Lebanon 35 years ago when Hezbollah had just been formed in resistance to Israeli occupation. I note that the US is the only major Western country that considers Hezbollah to be a terrorist organization and that it and its allies were the big winners in Sunday's parliamentary elections which the US media has ignored. I then return to Trump and point out his billionaire Jewish backers have been well paid for their contributions to Trump and that Jerusalem mayor is planning to name a square next to the new US Embassy in his honor. I then quote extensively from an article by the former commander of US forces in Europe, including NATO, retired Admiral James Stavradis and JINSA's Michael Makovsky calling for the US to go all out for Israel against Iran, including changing the 10 year $38 billion arms gift from Obama to Israel by giving them ALL of the weapons virtually right away since Israel is under threat from Iran. I finish by reporting on a US law that makes it a punishable offense for any US official or employee to speak publicly about Israel's possession of nuclear weapons and Grant Smith of Irmep's unsuccessful effort to challenge the law in court. In other words, folks we are all living under some form of Israeli occupation or control, however you want to describe it.

The Life and Times of Utah Phillips (ONE of TWO) Archive - updated

May 8, 2018, 5:52 p.m.
May is the month for the folk singer, labor organizer, storyteller, activist and poet Utah Phillips. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 15, 1935, he died in Nevada City, CA, on May 23, 2008. From the archives of TUC Radio - this is a celebration of his life and an account, in his own words, of how he became an activist. "The golden voice of the great American Southwest", Bruce "U. Utah" Phillips came to the Unitarian Fellowship Hall in Berkeley on May 18, 2004, to talk about his life.

Phillips parents were union organizers in the 1930s. When he left home to join a road crew in Yellowstone Park the older workers, who played guitars, taught Phillips how to turn his ukulele chords into guitar chords.

As a soldier during the war on Korea, Phillips continued to find refuge in music and helped to form a band. After he returned to the United States he befriended Ammon Hennessey at the Joe Hill House for Transients and Migrants. Hennessey convinced him to become a pacifist and to use music as a political weapon. Come back for the second part of this one hour talk when Utah Phillips remembered the founding of the Poor People’s Party for children, working with the Mormon Church, the Black Panthers and Judi Bari, and how he became involved with the Folk Singers movement.

Randy Olson: "Don't Be Such A Scientist"

May 8, 2018, 4:26 p.m.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what if the picture is a bar graph with a bunch of statistical notations? It may be worth a thousand words, but only to a handful of people. In the context of climate change, that's clearly not enough. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, is Randy Olson, a marine biology professor turned filmmaker and author whose book “Don’t Be Such A Scientist” makes the case that scientists can and should be better communicators, especially to regular (non-scientist) folk. Olson draws what he considers to be an important distinction between narration and storytelling, attempts to explain the mystifying ascendancy of Donald Trump, and gives us examples of what does and does not work in messaging scientific knowledge.
