Out of the Woods - Show #404 - 1-6-18

Dec. 29, 2017, 6:06 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

TB 171229 Truth & Reconciliation 2X

Dec. 28, 2017, 6:30 p.m.
This week’s radio show falls on a 5th Friday — meaning that it is time for the Thunderbolt’s Greatest Strikes, wherein I comb through the archives to find the best of the best! (Fasten your seatbelts…) For this week’s show, we reach all the way back to 2013 — those halcyon days of Barack Obama and fascism that was at least somewhat sane. First we feature a discourse on one of the many journalists and whistle blowers that were persecuted by our former president, i.e. Barrett Brown — then we air one of the very early Irony of the Week pieces — and for the feature piece this week we present solutions as we contemplate the Truth and Reconciliation process, which could provide one of the paths leading toward peace on Earth. Truth and Reconciliation is a real thing. There is no pie in my sky. Looking behind the headlines. Exposing the lies. Making fun of dumb-asses. Listen to the Thunderbolt at your own risk.

Mumia Abu-Jamal's New Book "Have Black Lives Ever Mattered?"

Dec. 28, 2017, 4:47 p.m.
Have Black Lives Ever Mattered? A Book Party Curated by author Mumia Abu-Jamal with Mumia Abu-Jamal Dr. Gerald Horne, author of over 30 books on radical Black history Pan Africa, MOVE and International Concerned Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal Johanna Fernandez, Professor of History, Baruch College of CUNY Ash Williams, activist/Charlottes Uprising organizer Immortal Technique, special performance The nations best known political prisoner, Mumia Abu Jamal, told supporters that his new book,Have Black Lives Ever Mattered?" reflects the peoples struggles in the invisible sectors of American society. In a righteously angry collection of commentaries and essays, Mumia Abu-Jamal, an acclaimed incarcerated author and intellectual asks: Have Black Lives Ever Mattered? "Mumia Abu-Jamal's painstaking courage, truth-telling and disinterest in avoiding the reality of American racial life is, as always, honorable," says Alice Walker. In his new book Have Black Lives Ever Mattered?, author and activist Mumia Abu-Jamal explores this question, spanning from the late 1990s to 2017. Each essay explores the violence of policing and the criminal legal system, whether from a historical perspective or through the stories of people who have died by the hands of police. In the first essay, "Hate Crimes," Mumia questions the legitimacy of the idea of hate crimes, pointing out that police are never charged with a hate crime when they brutalize and kill Black and Brown people. His essays discuss the murder of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, the killing of Tamir Rice by Cleveland, Ohio, police officer Timothy Loehmann, and what the aftermath of these slayings reveals about how the United States views Black people. His conclusion is perfectly summed up in the first two lines of his October 2015 essay titled, "Tamir Rice of Cleveland" -- "Question: When is a child not a child? Answer: When it's a Black child." Listen to Mumia, himself as he spoke at his book launching about some of the issues he engages with in "Have Black Lives Ever Mattered?", and commentary about police violence and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Youll also hear then from one of the greatest African- American authors and historians in the country, Dr. Gerald Horne, and the extra-ordinary activist Pam Africa.

Zero Mass Water: A New Source for H2O

Dec. 28, 2017, 10:43 a.m.
In our household we do our best to avoid buying bottled water - we're keenly aware of what those darn plastic bottles are doing to the environment. Instead, we just drink our tap water - it's safe and delicious, because we live in San Francisco, and our water is sourced from the magnificent Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. But not everyone in the United States can rely on their tap water to be safe. The horrifying reports of lead-tainted water in Flint, Michigan and other locations across the United States are a stark reminder of the inadequacy of local water infrastructure. What alternative do communities like that have? Our guest today on Sea Change Radio believes he has an answer. Zero Mass Water CEO and founder, Cody Friesen has launched a product called Source which uses special solar panels called hydropanels to transform humidity in the air into enough drinking water for most families to live comfortably. Friesen describes how his company's technology works (even in arid climates), how much it costs, and what it could mean for populations who rely too heavily on bottled water.

The Balfour Legacy Conference's Panel on Intersectionality

Dec. 27, 2017, 8:21 p.m.
We finally wrap up our coverage of the Balfour Legacy Conference held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on November 11th, 2017, today featuring an extraordinary panel on intersectionality…the relationship of all human rights struggles with each other and the power of that recognition. The first to speak on the panel is Matowin Monroe, co leader of the American Indians of New England. She is also lead organizer for the Indigenous Peoples Day which works to get communities to recognize Indigenous People’s Day in lieu of Columbus Day, as was done by Cambridge in 2016. Matowin is followed by Gabriel Camacho whose parents emigrated from Mexico in the 1990’s. Gabe has served on the boards of a myriad of Latin organizations, and currently is the Immigration Programs Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee. The next panelist to speak is Carl Williams, currently a staff attorney with the ACLU of Massachusetts, and former defense attorney for the Roxbury Defenders. He is active with the National Lawyers Guild, and is a Lecturer at the Northeastern Law School. The final speaker is Nadia Ben-Youssef, a lawyer and human rights activist and the first US representative for Adalah, the legal center for Arab minority rights located in Haifa, Israel. She is now developing Adalah’s US advocacy strategy to shape American discourse and influence US policy and practice in Palestine/Israel. This is the FIFTH of five consecutive shows covering the conference "Balfour’s Legacy: Confronting the Consequences," held on November 11th at the First Parish Church in Cambridge MA.
