Fighting the Debt Crisis in Puerto Rico

Antonio Carmona Reis, a social science professor at the University of Puerto Rico, a militant with the Association of University Professors and a pro-independence activist.
Puerto Rico has a poverty rate approaching 50 percent, and a public debt that amounts to over $20,000 dollars per inhabitant. With its poverty rate, more than double that of the United States poorest state Mississippi Puerto Rico had serious long-term economic problems that, like its current massive public debt, have been historically papered over. Most of the media attention on Puerto Ricos debt has focused on technical issues relating to the solvency of municipal bonds and austerity measures. Ignored is the history of how U.S. policies have resulted in more than three and a half million Puerto Ricans being affected by its colonial status. The bottom line is that Puerto Rico is the United States colony, that it decided to take by force 117 years ago, and has since treated like a resented orphan it has consistently undernourished politically and economically. Puerto Ricos current fiscal crisis is, in this sense, really a crisis of American colonial policies.
Meanwhile amidst the poverty and debt, the hedge fund vultures and Wall Street banks and lawyers are circling Puerto Rico. They, are, sensing a fiscal death spiral they can feed off and care little about the consequences for millions of residents as they manipulate a financial system devoid of any social conscience. The board appointed to oversee Puerto Ricos debt restructuring is turning the islands recession into a depression, of a magnitude seldom seen around the world. Unemployment, already at 12.4 percent, is soaring. The plan, which puts the creditors interests above those of the islands economy and people, has created a debt/death spiral and growing resistance to it by Puerto Ricans who are suffering under its yoke.

This weekâs Global Research News Hour digs into the Hanford Nuclear site in Washington State,where a tunnel collapse on Tuesday May 9th exposed to the atmosphere some of the most dangerous and toxic radiological material on Earth!
Officials claim the damage has been re-mediated and have ended site-wide emergency they declared that day. They claim no workers were injured due to the collapse and that there was no radiological release as a result. But can we believe them?
We speak to Tom Carpenter, Executive Director of the Seattle Washington based advocacy and watch-dog group Hanford Challenge. He explains some of the history of this site which has produced the majority of the plutonium for nuclear weapons during the Cold War era. He details what he has been told by workers since the incident. He also outlines the risks posed to the public interest by compromised oversight bodies.
We speak to self-identified Earth activist Mimi German, founder of Radcast.org and active with the anti-nuclear advocacy group No Nukes Northwest. She believes the accident may have been worse than officials will acknowledge and highlights radiation readings and other contradictory indicators leading her to believe that there is a cover-up of what really happened.
Susannah Frame is the award-winning investigative reporter who broke the Hanford tunnel collapse the morning it happened. She brings updates (as of May 11 at 3pm PDT) as to the status of the site, why the accident happened and what is and should be done to protect the public and the environment.

Today we focus on Omar Barghouti, one of the founders and current leaders of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. The BDS movement has enjoyed enormous success throughout the world, so much so that it has become the target of the Israeli propaganda machine. Stopping the BDS movement has become a major goal of Israel's legislation strategy in the United States, both at the national and state level, including Massachusetts. Anti-BDS legislation is currently pending at the State House, while Israel has been providing all-expense-paid propaganda tours to legislators.
At the moment, Israel has silenced Omar Barghouti by arresting and detaining him and slapping him with a gag order. Thus today it seems fitting that we feature his voice, his published words, and his fearless campaign for justice for Palestine. His actions are playing an enormous role in isolating Israel and portraying it truthfully as a pariah nation. Obviously, Israel's assaults are impeding his travels throughout the world, speaking, organizing, and promoting the BDS movement.
And BDS is working. If it were not, Israel would not be going all out to stop it.
We present a message on this by Haider Eid, professor and journalist who writes from Gaza. Following that, some spoken and written words by Barghouti himself.
After this episode was aired, Barghouti finally got released and allowed to travel to the USA; three weeks down the road, we'll have him again.
