Noam Chomsky: Racing to the Precipice (ONE of TWO)

May 2, 2017, 5:39 p.m.
Within days of the public posting in early April 2017 of his one hour speech the downloads for YouTube alone exceeded 100,000. Noam Chomsky spoke with such critical passion and urgency that this talk should have the widest possible distribution - so TUC Radio will carry it as well. It is a combination of a no holds barred critique of the Trump administration on climate change and nuclear danger. The reason why this March 23 speech has become so popular - I believe - is that it not only brings into focus the looming danger - that can sometimes feel overwhelming - but puts it into context of history, global justice, indigenous rebellion and equity. Chomsky investigates the reasons for our failure to address climate change, which he calls: the most awesome challenge (with possible exception of nuclear) that we are facing today. And in this part one of the talk he paints a picture of the US under Trump, virtually alone in the world heading actively for destruction, while most of the rest of the world is attempting to ward off catastrophe. Noam Chomsky spoke at the MIT Starr Forum on March 23, 2017. He was introduced as an American philosopher, historian, social critic, and political activist. He is Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has worked since 1955, and the author of over 100 books.

The Bret Stephens Debate: 50 Shades of the Grey Lady

May 2, 2017, 12:55 p.m.
Is the New York Times enabling a debate that most rational people think is long over? The latest conservative pundit to be hired by the New York Times has progressives and environmentalists concerned. Bret Stephens, a Pulitzer Prize winning "opinion journalist" from the Wall Street Journal made his first splash onto the op-ed page of the Times recently with a controversial piece entitled "Climate of Complete Certainty." In this editorial he asserts that climate science should continue to be debated, despite a preponderance of credible evidence sounding the alarm for immediate action. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with two PhDs with differing responses to Mr. Stephens's perspective and place at the Grey Lady. First, we're joined by Joe Romm, the founding editor of Climate Progress, who is critical of the new hire. Then, we hear from psychologist Pamela Paresky who, as a friend of Stephens, thinks that his brand of climate action denialism could actually be a catalyst for productive dialogue that might ultimately bring conservatives over to recognizing the threat of climate change.

Diana Johnstone on French election

May 1, 2017, 9:20 p.m.
Phil with Diana Johnstone discusses the first round of the French presidential elections. Key to the topic is the role reversal between the left and the right - it is now the right who claims to stand for the 'majority,' and the 'left' that calls for wars and interventions. There is more to history than the rise of Nazism. Concealed under 'anti-fascist' politics is support for disastrous policies of economic globalization, which immiserate French workers. At the same time, the social-democratic 'left' in France supports the EU, the expansion of NATO towards Russia, and the rise of open Nazi fascism in Ukraine. In echoes of the U.S. election, global liberals told leftist candidate Melenchon not to run, so that the 'left' could run lacklustre neo-liberal Macron against France's conservatives. Just what we need - another Hollande / Clinton.
