Out of the Woods - Show #360 - 3-4-17

Feb. 24, 2017, 4:21 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

TB 170224 Cold Steel Arms 2X

Feb. 24, 2017, 3:36 a.m.
This week’s archive radio show starts right off with the Toothless Old Grandpa stealing my microphone! (So where the hell else would we end up?) After I steal it back, I first present both the problem and the solution to Ted Nugent! Then, we conduct a study on how false flags are used to promote fascism — and then the Toothless Old Grandpa explains to the citizens of Chicago why they have nothing to worry about! (However: I suspect that his salty old tongue was firmly ensconced within in his toothless old cheek whilst he was doing so…) Next, we encourage all of our listeners to go F-%@# yourselves! Really! After that (if you’re still listening, that is) we nuance evil by illuminating the fact that most of these folks are not so much evil at heart as they are merely adapting to their environment — just like any successful species does! If you find yourself in an environment that lavishly rewards incredibly vile behavior whilst simultaneously severely punishing honorable behavior — well — what’s an adaptating species to do? The Toothless Old Grandpa then surprises us yet again by taking us to Greenland, where he provides a graphic example of how destroying communities also destroys people. Finally — for the Grand Thunderbolt Finale — we hurl a high-voltage Thunderbolt at the American foster care system! (It deserves it! Believe me!) As usual — I’m betting that this week we have a LOT of stuff that you didn’t know about. As usual — you listen to the Thunderbolt at your own risk! ..

As a counterpoint to this vintage sci-fi, two other interesting thinkers: a 1974 recording of Ivan Illich on the dangers of mechanising food production while a dependent population are stabulated (housed) in sterile concrete, followed by an introduction to the outrageous ideas of the psychonaut John C. Lilly in particular his dystopian vision of the Solid State Entity.

A Conversation between two greats, Amira Hass and Chris Hedges

Feb. 23, 2017, 12:55 p.m.
Our feature presentation today is a conversation with the remarkable Israeli journalist and prolific author Amira Hass, who writes for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Among her prominent books: Drinking the Sea at Gaza: Days and Nights in a Land Under Siege (1999) and Shifting Sands: Jewish Women Confront the Israeli Occupation, 2015 Updated Edition (2010/2015). Her works are celebrated by the pro-justice community in Israel and worldwide. We have featured her at least twice on This Week In Palestine. Unsurprisingly, she is loudly criticized, condemned, and smeared by the racist pro-Zionist community. That conversation is with Chris Hedges, renowned author and journalist who has written for the New York Times and many other publications. His recent books include Unspeakable (2016) and Wages of Rebellion (also 2016). Bestsellers include Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2010) and American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America (2008). Our parent show, Truth and Justice Radio, has featured him at least 10 times. The conversation takes place on Hedges' RT television news program, On Contact. Before that, we discuss recent developments relating to Israel's program of land theft. To steal vast tracts of Palestinian farmland, Israel frequently invokes "temporary" “military” or “security” reasons, purportedly allowed by The Hague Regulations. Use varies, but frequently it becomes an Israeli settlement. On the hope-building side, a somewhat different strategy is being tried in a court challenge of Israel's abuses of "temporary" justification, asserting that it has now "expired" (even though it was phony from the beginning), and land must therefore be returned to its Palestinian rightful owners. Predictably, on the hope-killing side, Israel's "leaders" have decided to short-circuit the effect of any court decision favorable to the original land owners quite simply, by passing and implementing a new law that declares all previous "temporary" seizures now permanent!
