Cheeze Pleeze # 660

Feb. 22, 2017, 4:42 p.m.
We'll "sing along with mitch" as it's been awhile since we have, Cartoon icons Rocky and Bullwinkle made a cast album and we'll play some of it, while a veteran comic sorta sings a sad song. It's an unusual roller coaster of cheezified emotions this week.

Karel van Wolferen on Ukraine, Chomsky, anti-Russian Hysteria

Feb. 22, 2017, 12:57 p.m.
Blankfort continues interview with Van Wolferen from 2/8/17 about his article, “Karl Rover's Prophecy,” in Unz Review in which he cites Rove's bragging to interviewer, Ron Suskind, of the Establishment's power to create “realities: that people will believe in. Today, he examines US orchestrated coup in Ukraine on its third anniversary notes that the conditions in today's Ukraine provide nothing to celebrate. He sharply criticizes European leaders who sheepishly follow US lead on Ukraine and NATO—an ongoing menace--pointing out that a qualification of today's European leaders was that earlier in their career they allowed themselves to become dependents of the US in making their foreign policy. Van Wolferen expresses dismay and surprise that it is liberals who have taken the lead in America's Russia bashing and dismay at what happened to the European Left after millions had turned out to protest the Iraq War in 2003. He again questions those with the capability of doing so, to speak out regarding the most influential event of this millennium, the attack on the World Trade Center, and the unwillingness of the intelligentsia to question the government's untenable “official narrative” because of fear of job loss and/or reputation. He cites Noam Chomsky, in particular, who is worshiped internationally by the Left for his efforts to discourage inquiries into controversial topics, such as 9-11 and the JFK assassination, telling them where they can and cannot go. He points out, significantly, that when foreign intellectuals visit the US, with government approval, many are sent to visit Chomsky who is cited as an example of dissent being permitted in the US. He also speaks of his frustration when his reporting on the war of the Khymer Rouge on the people of Cambodia was countered in the West by Chomsky's statements that the accusations against the regime of Pol Pot were US propaganda, a mistake for which Chomsky has never apologized.

Jeff Blankfort: News/Op: Liberals Hypocrisy re Russia

Feb. 22, 2017, 12:28 p.m.
Blankfort opens noting this is 3rd anniversary of success of US orchestrated coup in Ukraine, when Yanukovich fled Kiev, then attacks NPR for pushing non-stop for confrontation with Russia as it did for war on Iraq. He then goes on to rip Michael Moore, Bill Moyers and the liberal organizations and websites that are demanding, like them, a special commission to investigate alleged Russian meddling in US election: Common Cause, Common Dreams, AlterNet, Color of Change, Move On, quoting Moore's tweets and Moyers article in The Populist, reminding listeners that Moyers was a loyal LBJ press secretary during the bombing of Vietnam and has never apologized. Blankfort asks how these liberals can believe US intelligence which has been telling nothing but lies to the public since WW 2, and asks why they did not call for a special commission to investigate the intelligence behind the war on Iraq and call for prosecution of those responsible. Then, he PLAYS three clips. The first (4:10) is the secretly recorded phone conversation between Dep Sec of State Victoria Nuland and US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoff Pyatt, about who should be the next Ukraine prime minister, two weeks before coup succeeds. The second (2:05) has John McCain and Lindsay Graham speaking to Ukranian soldiers last December, calling on them to go on offensive against Russia. The third (2:46) is former congressman and presidential candidate, Dennis Kucinich, speaking on Fox News against the warmongers pushing for a new Cold War. ALL OF THESE ARE “MUST LISTENS.”

Michael Parenti: Fascism, The False Revolution, TWO of TWO

Feb. 21, 2017, 8:56 p.m.
The overwhelming response from those who heard part ONE of this program was disbelief - how can an analysis made in 1995 be so relevant for 2017! In this conclusion Parenti addresses: How western capitalist states have cooperated with Fascism as they saw Fascists as bulwark against communism. He reminds us that US corporations such as Dupont, Ford, GM, ITT, had factories in fascist Germany and after the war collected money from the US tax payers for damages incurred in Allied bombing raids. Parenti says that we might do well to stop thinking of Fascism as either or condition. To insist that you don't have Fascism until every vestige of constitutional government is destroyed and the jackboot is on our necks is to overlook the antidemocratic manifestations in many "democracies". There is Fascism in the pin striped suit - he says. When the power of capital is untrammeled, Parenti says, all of us are at risk. The environment, the sacred forests, the creatures of the sea. The real burden to society are not the poor but the corporate rich we can no longer afford them. This talk was recorded before a standing room audience of 1,200 in Berkeley, CA, on September 23, 1995. Parenti grew up in a working class Italian part of New York City and earned a PhD in political science from Yale.

Steve Early on Remaking an American City

Feb. 21, 2017, 8:42 p.m.
The power and success of local political action to meet the needs of a community is revealed in the book “Refinery Town:  Big Oil, Big Money and the Remaking of an American City.” Written by Steve Early, with a Forward by Senator Bernie Sanders, “Refinery Town” describes the political change in Richmond, California, that began in 2000. Richmond was a largely working-class city of 110,000 people, with one of the highest per capita homicide rates, and twice the average jobless rate. Early tells the story of the community organizing that successfully raised the minimum wage, challenged evictions and home foreclosures, and sought fair taxation of Big Oil. In this case, the Big Oil is the Chevron Oil Company, which owns and operates a Richmond refinery, one of the largest oil refineries in California.   Steve Early, formerly a community organizer, activist, lawyer, and union representative, and now the author of “Refinery Town,” visited with Radio Curious by phone on February 20, 2017, from his home in Richmond. We began our conversation as he described Richmond’s transformation.

The role of 'Human Rights' in building consent for intervention

Feb. 21, 2017, 8:15 p.m.
Phil remembers Bob White, and discusses the role of 'human rights' organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, in delegitimizing governments targeted by Washington. Conlon and Taylor refer in particular to Amnesty International's latest 'report' on Syria, which was not based on fact. 'Progressives' need to show self-respect and question the incendiary rhetoric coming from opaque, government-funded entities headquartered in Washington and London.

Teens Sue U.S. Gov't over Climate Change

Feb. 21, 2017, 5:39 p.m.
What do a 13 year old in Louisiana, a 14 year old in Oregon and a 16 year old in Hawaii all have in common besides possibly the number of hours a day they spend on Instagram? Actually, these teens are among a group of 21 very serious youth plaintiffs who have leveled a legal challenge to climate change policy. This week on Sea Change Radio, we break down Juliana v. U.S., a landmark case wherein children are suing the US government for allowing dangerous CO2 levels to permeate the atmosphere and disrupt the future environment. Our guest is Philip Gregory, the lead plaintiff attorney on the case, who breaks down the timeline of the proceedings, the potential impact it could have both in the U.S. and overseas, and the role former Exxon Mobil CEO and current Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, has in the case. Historically, lawsuits have been an effective way to move what appear to be intractable policies and practices. Could this group of young people topple the protective wall the government has built around the gas and oil industry? And if they do, what Instagram filter will they use when they post their victory?

Washington, which is in political turmoil, still presses to impose an armed presence in Syria. But Syria with the help of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, is winning strategic battles. Though new President Trump and Erdogan of Turkey insist they will move to take territory from the sovereign state of Syria, the chances they will succeed are being reduced. Syria has proven stronger than all the Western pundits believed.

Max Blumenthal on Palestine's Rebellion, Israel's Fascism

Feb. 20, 2017, 1:48 p.m.
Our feature presentation today is an interview of Journalist and author Max Blumenthal conducted on Telesur by Abby Martin. Like many of our broadcasts, we found this on YouTube, and like most of Blumenthal’s presentations, it is loaded with personal observations and analysis from the ground, from Israel, and the West Bank and in this case also Gaza where he was during the last Israeli bombardment of that region in 2014. If you watch this interview on YouTube, you'll witness video outtakes of Israel’s subjugation of the Palestinian people. The video ends showing an Israeli military tank rolling into the Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem. Over a loudspeaker system an Israeli soldier shouts the following, which is translated from the Arabic: “People of Aida Camp. We are the occupational army. You throw stones and we will hit you with gas until you die, the children, the youth, the old people. You will die. We won’t leave any of you alive. We have arrested one of you, he is with us now, we took him from his home, and we will slaughter and kill him while you watch, if you keep throwing stones. Go home or we will gas you until you die. Your children, your families, everyone. We will kill you. Listen to me, all of you go home. It’s better for you.” The video ends with the sound of a rifle shot. Before that, We begin with a portion of an interview with Electronic Intifada founder Ali Abunimah, conducted on Al Jazeera English last December 26. Abunimah responds to the UN Security Council’s resolution condemning the continuing Illegal development of settlements on occupied Palestinian land. You will remember that the United States unexpectedly abstained on the vote, much to the consternation of Netanyahu. And afterward, in light of all of the hideous wrongs that Donald Trump's thugs are cooking up, we comment, and quote an article by Palestinian journalist Nadia Elia, on resisters' growing awareness of intersectionality.
