#486 -- A Sad Heart At the Supermarket (R)
June 25, 2017, 11:42 a.m.
Why is supermarket shopping so tiring and depressing? Maybe it's the constant vigilance required to prevent your getting fleeced.
KD contrasts the supermarket's celebration of deception, swindling, and bad faith (all legal) with the eccentric charm of the small shops of Pittsburgh in the 1970s.
Adding to the critique of corporate agro-marketing are two short talks by JIM HIGHTOWER and a song by DAVID ROVICS.
War Against the People: an interview with Israeli activist Jeff Halper on his book
June 24, 2017, 6:53 p.m.
Todayâs entire edition of This Week In Palestine consists of our interview with anthropologist, author, activist, and co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, Jeff Halper. Jeff explains the material in his book, War against the People: Israel, the Palestinians and Global Pacification. The book is a frightening examination of the Israeli weapons and "security" development industry. The original broadcast of this interview was on 3/27/2016. We are repeating it now, slightly edited, because we believe the book's findings are extremely important and well worth more study.
We see that Israel's highly developed military and "security" component has made it a prized partner for oppressive nations around the world, of course most notably the United States. Palestine, and especially Gaza, are freely treated as a coveted laboratory, where Israel can test its lethal gadgetry without compunction. This enables Israel to boast that the weapons it sells are field-tested. Israel has partnered with U.S.-based weapons component developers, receiving credit for its wondrous small battlefield technology, helping governments make "war against the people" as well as creating high-tech jobs. Israel trains and militarizes U.S. police. Apartheid, gross injustice, illegal toxic settlements, house demolitions -- who cares? It's all done in the service of the capitalist markets our "leaders" love.
Trump Huffs and Puffs, but Cuba and the Real World Remain Standing
June 24, 2017, 2:45 p.m.
To satisfy Republican political hacks in Miami, President Trump has given an ignorant speech about reversing US policy on Cuba (and defying a world which is tired of American hubris).
Bolender makes the point that despite the bluster, most of the new friendlier aspects of policy, which came late in the Obama presidency, will actually remain in place. But Cuba, which has taken note of Trumpâs tone, will plan accordingly.
Welcome to New York, Oscar Lopez Rivera
June 24, 2017, 2:04 p.m.
Welcome to New York, Oscar! / Bienvenido a Nueva York, Oscar!
Puerto Rican independence activist Oscar Lopez Rivera, recently released from prison after 35 years, much of which was spent in solitary confinement was cheered as the Mandela of Puerto Rico before a packed house at Hostos College, and well bring you highlights of the tribute. Rivera, didnt miss a beat after his decades behind the walls as a political prisoner, but rather seemed buoyed by his experience and certainly the ebullience of the crowd and immediately sounded the drum beat of resistance to the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, PROMESA and the Acts imposed junta.
He spoke in pained tones of the austerity budget that burdens the populace and denounced the wealthy elite turning Puerto Rico into their playground. He proclaimed loudly and proudly his ongoing resistance against the colonization of Puerto Rico. Before his numerous supporters he stood, an undaunted freedom fighter intent to support the Puerto Rican people in struggle against the most pronounced manifestations of colonial exploitation and for independence.
The night was filled with poems such as by acclaimed poet Martin Espada, folkloric music and dance performances which filled the auditorium with love for Oscar Lopez Rivera and imbued all in attendance with the spirit of liberation and self-determination.

Meanwhile, the Syrian and allied forces are successfully fighting to reestablish the territorial sovereignty of the country.

Exception to the Rulers or Gatekeepers for Empire? Independent Media's Failed Coverage of Syria
June 23, 2017, 10:03 a.m.
This week's Global Research News Hour probes the problematic coverage of Syria by Western media, including supposedly independent media outlets like the popular Democracy Now.
Our first guest, journalist Vanessa Beeley, shares her research on the White Helmets, and her reporting from Alleppo, and denounces the clear bias and omissions relayed by the West including Democracy Now.
Daniel Borgstrom, a self described fan of Democracy Now talks more about the problematic coverage of Syria and other issues that inspired him and his Veterans for Peace group to distribute an open letter and petition targetting Democracy Now.
Finally, independent journalist Bob Feldman presents some of his research on the elite foundation funding of establishment left media such as Democracy Now and the mechanisms by which 'inconvenient information' can be deleted from public discourse as a result.

Mohammed Salwaha's Palestinian House of Friendship
June 22, 2017, 8:49 p.m.
In the city of Nabulus in the West Bank of Palestine, a linguistic professor by the name of Mohammed Salwaha founded a project following the signing of the Oslo Accords, to prepare the Palestinian people for the democratic state they thought was promised by the Accords. Although the democratic state never came, the project called the Palestinian House of Friendship has flourished with a broadened mission and a new purpose.
Mohammed Salwaha spoke at a fundraiser for that project in Cambridge a few weeks ago, and his speech is the focus of our first presentation today.
Our concluding part is an interview with Columbia University Historian, Rashid Khalidi, conducted by Nadar Hashemi, political scientist at the University of Denver concerning the Palestinian political leadership, where is it, how has it succeeded or failed, where is it goingâ¦questions we are all asking these days.
