Incoming EPA Chief: Fox In The Henhouse

Jan. 10, 2017, 4:05 p.m.
When someone sues an organization repeatedly and then gets put in charge of that agency it's a pretty classic example of the fox guarding the henhouse. Welcome to the bizarro-world of the Trump Administration where the fossil fuel industry's favorite son, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, is poised to run the Environmental Protection Agency. The appointment of a climate change denier like Pruitt to run the EPA affirms, as NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen has put it, that "the US government is officially done with being evidence-based." On this week's Sea Change Radio, Mother Jones reporter Rebecca Leber gives us a closer look at the new head of the EPA, what his appointment means politically, what the repercussions could be for the climate and how states may be able to protect the environment locally.

Nurses Prescribe: Reject HHS Nominee Price

Jan. 8, 2017, 6:37 p.m.
Nurses Union Plea to Senate: Reject Butcher Price, Poised to Decapitate Health Care Access if Confirmed as Health and Human Services Secretary with Deborah Burger RN, Co-President, National Nurses United ("NNU") National Nurses United the nations largest nurses union is calling on the Senate to reject the nomination of Representative Tom Price, Donald Trumps choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. citing Prices plans to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, support for privatization, opposition to reproductive rights for women, and proposals to reduce federal support for Medicaid: Our union represents registered nurses. They are that canaries in the Coal Minethe ones who see the effects of the horrific priorities of this nation. They see people all the time who are continuing to suffer from the ongoing consequences of a health care system thats based on the ability to pay and profiteering and not on patient need. The Price nomination will make that crisis for so many people far worse because of his history and the philosophy that he represents, which is basically further transference of our health and security to a profiteering, private-focused health care systemto further deny proper health care services to millions of Americans. NNU spokesperson Having said that the NNU will talk about the ways we can demonstrate a change of direction by showing a real aggressive advocacy for working people, and a move away from the priorities of Wall Street, which includes the corporate health-care industry, who profiteers off of people being in pain and sick. ************************* Plus Sanders Hammers Republicans on Health Care During a recent speech on the Senate floor about health care , Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) lambasted Congressional Republicans on their upcoming proposals to repeal The Affordable Care Act without any plan on how to replace it .This combined with their plans to reform (i.e. cut) Medicaid and Medicare. would devastate the U.S. health care system

Jan. 8, 2017, 12:12 p.m.
Harvard climate scientist James G. Anderson interviewed by Dale Lehman. This week, Anderson lucidly explains why "global warming" is a bad term to use (it understates the problem's breadth and severity). He makes short work of the claim that climate change is natural, not man-made. And he has interesting things to say about the ozone layer ... the Kyoto Protocol ... and why electricity is overwhelmingly the best fuel, not only for transportation but for heating too. Plus a song by David Rovics.
