Out of the Woods - Show #353 - 1-14-17

Jan. 5, 2017, 8:33 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Journalist Mohammed Omer on Gaza; two-state illusion finally buried -- by Trump!

Jan. 4, 2017, 5:39 a.m.
Our featured speaker today is Gazan independent journalist Mohammed Omer. He spoke at the Middle East Forum at the Center for Middle East Studies at Harvard University. On this occasion, he is introduced by Harvard Professor Sara Roy. Omer paints a stunning portrait of the reality of Gaza in this presentation (including power point illustrations our listeners won't see), but was really driven by his compelling narrative. But first, some commentary on Trump and the vaunted two-state solution/illusion: "Donald Trump has the capacity to mete out a mercy killing to all the empty formulas, to let the air out of the “peace process” balloon and to finally kill off the walking dead known as the two-state solution." So writes journalist Gideon Levy, columnist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. He continues: "If only the president-elect of the United States will keep his word. We must now pray for the health and well being of Donald Trump, and hope he does not go back on his big promises to Israel. After he moves the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, preferably to the eastern part of the unified capital, we must hope that his election will also bring about a change in U.S. policy toward the settlement enterprise. "I write these words without a trace of irony. If Trump gathers up the courage to make such a change, then he will contribute more than any of his predecessors, more enlightened than he, to reaching an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. ..."

Prof. Lonnie Thompson: Melting of the High Mountain Glaciers of the World

Jan. 3, 2017, 6:03 p.m.
This is a re-broadcast and partial update of one of the most appreciated and also rare programs by TUC. This program will be followed by two updates with Dr. Thompson. Thompson issues a warning that the mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically within the last twenty years. He is the leading expert on glaciers with 30 years of on location research. Thompson saw one of the first ice cores that was recovered from a glacier when he was in graduate school. He was fascinated by the amount of data on earth history, past climate and world changing events that can be read from these ice cores and made the exploration of ice his life's work. He teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences and is Senior Research Scientists at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State University. In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007 to issue this warning. Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded the event for the AGU. This is the only other audio or visual record of this amazing talk. Recorded 12/12/2007

We learn about the logistics of this undertaking, compare it to offshore wind projects in Europe, and ponder the future of similar endeavors under a presidential administration that is openly hostile to wind power.

#461 -- Haiti: The Shape of Things to Come? (R)

Jan. 2, 2017, 4:57 p.m.
Third World people are intentionally kept poor so that our rich "investors" may become still richer. British journalist JOHANN HARI argues this case, using Haiti as example. MICHAEL PARENTI (early 1990s) concurs, with examples from Haiti and elsewhere. I suggest that the U.S. is now being pushed down the same road as Haiti. And comedians BOB AND RAY offer a comic look at a domestic company that has adopted a Third-World business model: The Great Lakes Paper Clip Company.
