#481 -- The Empire Turns on its Citizens (R)
May 21, 2017, 7:44 p.m.
Two short talks by journalist/essayist Chris Hedges on the bad effects of empire at home.
As empires buckle under their own weight, the harsh measures of control they use to subjugate countries abroad are turned on their own citizens. We see the evidence all around us: government spying on everyone, economic plunder, militarized police, trumped-up charges against dissenters, and the world's largest prison system.
The goal of the repression is to crush dissent and opposition, says Hedges.
Why is the Jewish United Fund financing Islamophobia?
May 21, 2017, 6:34 p.m.
Presentation on campaign to expose unacceptable behavior by the Jewish United Fund (JUF), a charitable organization which claims to speak and act on behalf of the Jewish community.
From program:
The Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago contributed nearly $1 million to the Islamophobia Industry from 2011-2014, and received millions from leading funders of Islamophobia in the same time period.
Come learn about #DefundIslamophobia (video here and report here), a campaign we launched a few weeks ago to force the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago to stop contributing to and accepting funds from the Islamophobia Industry, what the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as âa large and evolving network of Islam-bashing activists.â
Stephanie Skora and Lesley Williams of Jewish Voice for Peace will be joined by Deanna Othman of American Muslims for Palestine-Chicago and Terri Johnson of the Center for New Community!
Not only do the JUF's financial ties spread the ideologies that enable promotion of anti-Muslim policies such as the current administrationâs desired Muslim Ban, they also align with the JUFâs support for repression of Palestinian human rights both in Palestine and here in the U.S.!

BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti speaks at Harvard
May 21, 2017, 12:43 p.m.
Omar Barghouti, co-founder and leading voice of the Palestinian BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement, spoke to a full house at Harvard following his long period of detention by the Israeli military. He was finally able to do his United states speaking tour which had been postponed due to his arrest.
We feature his main address and as much of the question and answer period as time will allow. The Q&A may be a bit difficult to follow because the moderator took 3 questions at a time, and then let Barghouti answer them. We hope you will be able to follow the flow, especially as he responds to some challenging questions from Zionist students.
The best explanation of why Barghouti was imprisoned and and stuck with travel restrictions: Israeli government leaders are concerned that BDS is working. They would prefer to continue abusing Palestinians with long-accustomed impunity.

National Union of Metalworkers: Fighting Political Corruption and Building a Socialist Movement in South Africa
with
Irvin Jim, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the biggest single trade union in South Africa. He is a strong critic of the ruling African National Congress, which he accuses of failing to implement the 1955 Freedom Charter.
The Metalworkers union sees much of the leadership of the ANC as supporting a "post-Apartheid neoliberal capitalist South Africa with South African and multinational corporations and the South African white political community" . Jim suggests that NUMSA is a union whose goal is the creation of a "Socialist Republic of South Africa" . The mission is to convince society that capitalism has failed and a new worker-centered economic dispensation is required. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is planning to form a political party to fight for the abolishment of capitalism The newly launched trade union grouping in South Africa " the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) " promises to be a voice for the growing numbers of unorganized and marginalized workers in the country.

Palestinian historian Joseph Massad speaks at Harvard during Anti-apartheid week
May 19, 2017, 12:48 p.m.
This week we feature the voice of Palestinian historian Joseph Massad who spoke at Harvard University during Anti-apartheid Week as part of a series of events sponsored by the Harvard Palestine Solidarity Committee. Joseph Massad is Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University.
This talk was followed by a robust Q&A session, from which we shall hear one exchange. It is from a student concerned that should the walls come down in Israel, and 5 to 6 million Palestinian refugees return to inhabit historic Palestine and should Fatah and/or Hamas come to power, what would happen to the Jewish population? We conclude with that question and its answer.
