December - Snowy Owl Irruptions
Oct. 17, 2016, 4:02 p.m.
Unprecedented numbers of snowy owls have been turning up in Wisconsin and other parts of the eastern U.S. over the past few years. And bird-watchers eagerly anticipate their arrival. Why do they come south in the winter? And why so many in recent years? Get the details when you listen to our podcast.
December - Mammals M-A-D in Winter
Oct. 17, 2016, 3:59 p.m.
To survive a Wisconsin winter, animals either migrate, adapt, or die â or MAD, and they have found ingenious ways to do so. A few migrate, others retreat to their dens, lower their body temperature and slow their heart rate and respiration. Beavers wait out the winter in their lodges eating the food theyâve hoarded in the warmer months. Snowshoe hares change the color of their coats to blend in with the winter snow. Every mammal species has a winter story to tell, and all of them are remarkable!
December - Irruptive Finches
Oct. 17, 2016, 3:56 p.m.
To survive a Wisconsin winter, animals either migrate, adapt, or die â or MAD, and they have found ingenious ways to do so. A few migrate, others retreat to their dens, lower their body temperature and slow their heart rate and respiration. Things get exciting for birdwatchers in Wisconsin when food scarcities in Canada send birds like white-winged crossbills, purple finches and pine siskensâwhich donât normally winter this far southâinto Wisconsin. Listen in and learn what an âirruptionâ is and why they happen.

The real Syria Civil Defense works to save lives, Boris Johnson's White Helmets are a propaganda device.
Oct. 16, 2016, 6:44 p.m.
Mainstream media have their marching orders: build a propaganda campaign to vilify the Syrian government, and promote false âheroesâ representing the terrorists who have refused all attempts for a peaceful resolution.
Vanessa Beeley has been to Syria and is one of the very few journalists to report on the work of the legal and internationally-recognized Syria Civil Defence. Their very existence gives the lie to the name-stealing civil defence organization, backed by Boris Johnson, using the public relations moniker the âWhite Helmets.â

Anarchist, Antifascist, and Antiracist Goth, Darkwave, and Coldwave (mostly) plus Sean Swain on Clownx
Oct. 16, 2016, 12:32 p.m.
This week on the show we decided to take a musical interlude, and I thought we would try something slightly different from what we normally do. Since it's getting all autumnal and halloweeny, it seemed appropriate to settle in with some tunes that reflect that mood, and perhaps get spooky. What I'm trying to say is that I went through and found anarchistic, antifascist, antiracist goth, darkwave, and coldwave mostly, some of which may not be explicitly those things but are at the very least liked by anarchists, antifascists, and antiracists.
A HUGE SHOUTOUT to Margaret Killjoy, who generously collaborated with me on this playlist. Check out their publication Graceless: A Journal of the Radical Gothic for more information on matters anarcho goth. Here is our show today, I hope you enjoy it.
Before the music, I'd like to announce that this week, October 15th thru 22nd, marks the week of renewed action for the Prison Strike. This is a struggle which is still very much alive and flourishing, and it is so so important for folks who are putting their lives, safeties, and sanities on the line to not feel abandoned or alone.
On that tip, there is an all day letter writing event happening today in downtown Asheville's Prichard Park until 6pm. There will be food provided by Food Not Bombs, and it's asked that folks bring any stamps they can get their hands on. This event will specifically include information on how to write to those most affected by the Prison Strike, let's show folks that we have their backs!

Phyllis Bennis: Ending the Many Wars in Syria
Oct. 16, 2016, 11:48 a.m.
After Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debated sharp disagreements on U.S. policy towards the Syrian civil war in their debates, Middle East analyst Phyllis Bennis presents a series of talks at Massachusetts colleges and universities on âEnding the Many Wars in Syriaâ.
Among the questions she addresses: Is the war in Syria a civil war? Is it a proxy war between the US and Russia ? Is it also a proxy war between Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey? Can ISIS be reined in? Should Assad go? Or stay? Should the US âdo moreâ? Or is it already doing too much by arming and training rebel groups? What will be the likely outcome of the current cease fire negotiations? How can such a complex set of wars be settled by diplomacy? What solutions should the US peace movement support?

Journalists Rula Jebreal and Philip Weiss on the bias of American media as regards Israel/Palestine
Oct. 15, 2016, 1:57 p.m.
In this one-hour edition, we take on the bias of American media on the presentation of news and analysis concerning the Israel/Palestine issue. We do so by tapping the words of two very special journalists.
First up is Palestinian journalist, author and screen writer, Rula Jebreal (sometimes cited as âRual Jebrealâ). She was fired successively by Italian TV, Egyptian media, and MSNBC, in each case for doing her job honestly. She explains this and more in a recent interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. Then we'll hear her keynote speech at the recent Washington DC conference on the Influence of Israel. Rula's website is rulajebreal.com.
We finish with a presentation made at that same conference by veteran journalist Philip Weiss, co-founder of Mondoweiss.net. He takes on the New York Times.

The Countrys Racial Wealth Divide
with
Dedrick Asante-Muhammed, Director of the Racial Wealth Divide Initiative at the Corporation for Enterprise Development
Racial and economic inequality are the most pressing social issues of our time. In the last decade, we have seen the catastrophic economic impact of the Great
Recession and an ensuing recovery that has bypassed millions of Americans, especially households of color. A new report looks at the country's racial wealth gap, finding that if current public policies stay the same, it will take more than two centuries for black families to accumulate the same amount of wealth that white families have today. For the average Latino family, it will take 84 years. Building Bridges will focus on the essential role that wealth plays in achieving financial security and opportunity.
