Out of the Woods - Show #356 - 2-4-17
Jan. 26, 2017, 11:46 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
Rules and more rules: Husband lives in Bethlehem but wife and child live in Jerusalem
Jan. 26, 2017, 11:44 a.m.
Interview guest John Atick explains the serpentine procedures, checkpoints, travel times, and driving restrictions involved for visits with his own wife and child. It helps that he's an experienced travel guide! He is interviewed by our colleague Steven Low in Lincoln, MA.
Also, we share two articles of note by Gazan thinkers.
First, one by Haidar Eid, titled "Following Kerryâs âhistoricâ speech we need a diplomacy of resistance." The article remarks on the nonsensicality of John Kerry's December 28 speech in which he lamented the death of the so-called two-state solution for the so-called âIsraeli-Palestinian conflict.â Eid points out that the term "Israeli-Palestinian conflict" is inappropriate where Israel is infinitely stronger than Palestine and occupies and oppresses it. As regards the dead "solution," it would have been inherently racist, preserving apartheid.
Haidar Eid is Associate Professor of Postcolonial and Postmodern Literature at Gaza's al-Aqsa University. The full article is posted at http://mondoweiss.net/2016/12/following-diplomacy-resistance/.
Second, one by Isra Saleh El-Namy titled "Hamas celebrates 29th anniversary amid local and international challenges Middle East." The article remarks on Fatah's continued intransigence in the face of attempts by Hamas to reconcile.
Isra Saleh El-Nameh is a journalist in Gaza. The full article is posted at http://mondoweiss.net/2017/01/celebrates-anniversary-international/.

Jeff Blankfort-NewsOp: US 'Fake News' on Russia, Israel Lobby revisited
Jan. 25, 2017, 11:34 a.m.
Blankfort notes differences in US between first TOTW broadcast in January, 2001, and today, noting that the wars and US military expansion triggered by 9/11 brought forth no national protests as has Trump's inauguration. He refers to what he had planned for previous commentary that had been per-empted by Trump's first press conference.
He begins by pointing out error in Lincoln quote re not being able âto fool all the people all the time,â which is never necessary, just enough of the people most of the time with a supporting media. He gives examples of NPR's playing of this role re the White House generated anti-Russian propaganda which he labels âfake news.â He notes that the political establishment will not tolerate friendly relations with Russia as Trump has proposed and cites McClatchy news report that five US intel agencies have begun investigating a kitchen sink of leads into Russian interference in the US dating well before the leaked report from the Republican and Clinton's British intel agent.
Blankfort cites rare mainstream media critique of first declassified intel report and points to ludicrous claims that Russia tried to undermine Americans' faith in political process and Clinton's reputation, suggesting it would have been fodder for Jon Stewart.
He then notes that the real interferer in US politics is Israel which has been doing it for so long that it's taken for granted and, as latest evidence, cites bipartisan attack on Obama and Kerry for US abstention on UNSC vote on illegal Jewish settlements. He praises his member of Congress, Jared Huffman for opposing House bill blasting UNSC vote as well as Sen. Diane Feinstein who was lone senator making a statement supporting the abstention and how it was ignored by the media.
He quotes Paris-based journalist Diana Johnstone on how the rough treatment by Exxon Mobil chief by Sen. Foreign Relations Com. illustrates exaggeration of oil companies power as contrasted to that of the Zionists and to illustrate Zionist power over the media, Blankfort than quotes Sen. Fulbright, the first big target of AIPAC a half century ago about the latter's power over Congress.
Blankfort explains why Fulbright was targeted; in 1963 hearings he exposed Israels' law-breaking payments to American Zionist Council for pro-Israel propaganda that led Pres. Kennedy to call for Justice Dept. to get it to register as a foreign agent which its lawyers delayed until JFK's assassination and pro-Israel LBJ's taking over the White House was made moot.
He recalls how effort by Grant Smith of IRmep to resuscitate Justice Dept. effort was rejected because it is under as tight a control of Congress and refers to Smith's book, âForeign Agents: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee from the 1963 Fulbright hearings to the 2005 Espionage Scandal.â
He concludes with report on Al Jazeera undercover operation that exposes Israel's efforts to undermine British minister who dares to criticize Israel and its settlement construction.

Dr. Victoria Patterson: It Does Not Require Many Words to Speak the Truth
Jan. 24, 2017, 8:25 p.m.
This week, we continue our discussion with ethnologist Dr. Victoria Patterson. We talk about how the United States treated the Native people of North America initially, and later during the westward expansion. We also discuss the consequences to the Native people when they entered into written treaties with the United States. Not having a written language, they relied on the carefully chosen words they spoke during the treaty negotiations and the words spoken by the representatives of the United States.
If The Dutch Ruled The World
Jan. 24, 2017, 6:51 p.m.
When liberal politicians suggest we look for policy-making inspiration from social democracies in Europe, the automatic reaction from some corners of the political scene is something like "well, then, move to Sweden!" or "Love it or leave it!" But today, reflecting upon the millions of women, men, and children who participated in the historical march over the weekend, its pretty clear that advocating for change is part of why we do love it. There is no reason that we can't take lessons from other systems in our collective pursuit of a more perfect union, not to mention a more healthy environment. This week on Sea Change Radio we take a peek at how the Dutch do things. Host Alex Wise speaks with two American MikeFawcettenvironmentalists based in the Netherlands to get their perspective on Hollands environmental policies and practices. Michael Payne, a wind energy and bicycle advocate, and Mike Fawcett, the founder of Farm Zero discuss the cultural, economic, and financial keys to Dutch sustainability.
Naomi Klein: Change the System, not the Climate
Jan. 24, 2017, 5:36 p.m.
Naomi Klein is best known for her book: This Changes Everything, Capitalism versus the Climate. She wrote: ... itâs not about carbonâitâs about capitalism... [and] we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.
An important document towards building a better future is the Leap Manifesto. It calls for a restructuring of the Canadian economy and an end to the use of fossil fuels. The Leap Manifesto was initiated in the spring of 2015 at a two-day meeting in Toronto. Among those who wrote it were representatives from Canadaâs Indigenous rights, social and food justice, environmental, faith-based and labor movements. And Naomi Klein gives a summary of the manifesto in this program.
