Blowing the whistle on the U.S. drone program

July 21, 2016, 2:33 p.m.
Christopher Aaron worked for the CIA on the U.S. drone program. After a while, he began realizing how wrong it is and quit. Finally, he gathered up his courage and began speaking out publicly, despite little or no protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act. In a program titled Drones: Killing Innocents and Stoking War, he spoke 5-5-2016 at the Cambridge Public Library, Central Square Branch (Cambridge, MA). He took care to avoid revealing so-called classified information. Nonetheless the story Christopher tells is riveting, and it clearly calls for action.

Press Conference - Police Accountability through Civilian Control

July 20, 2016, 10:08 a.m.
Alderman Carlos Rosa of the 35th Ward announces his support for the Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) Ordinance that would place control of the Chicago Police Department under an elected board of civilians with the power to end police impunity, re-write the police rule book, submit CPD's budget to the City Council and approve contracts with the police unions. Frank Chapman of the Chicago Alliance to End Racist and Political Oppression and CPAC organizer speaks about the campaign. He is followed by Reverend Catherine Brown who was terrorized at gun point by two Chicago police and Mark Clements who as a juvenile was tortured into a false confession during the years that Commander John Burge was torturing blacks into confessing to capital crimes. Clements raises the failure of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to protect children under its supervision from police sexual misconduct and torture and calls for an extension of the Statue of Limitations, as was done for children abused by Catholic priests, to allow victims now coming forward to obtain justice.

Which Way Now for Erdogan?

July 20, 2016, 6:42 a.m.
Bangash talks about Fethullah Gulen and some of the other key figures who were likely involved in the effort to seize power from President Erdogan of Turkey. Clearly the Turkish leadership is now in a political dilemma. Erdogan has demanded the US turn over Gulen but the US shows no intention to do so. And the suspicion is that the US and Saudi Arabia want to get rid of Erdogan, who has shown a willingness to get along with Russia and perhaps “normalize” relations with Syria. The stakes are very high, but it should not be long before we know which direction the Turkish leader will take.

Are we getting smarter or dumber, or both?

July 19, 2016, 4:58 a.m.
According to the "Flynn Effect" humans are getting smarter and smarter. We know more than we ever did and score higher on IQ tests than our parents. But the number of geniuses is falling, as is mental speed, as measured by response-tests. What gives? Dr. Michael Woodley, interviewed here by Frank Salter, finds evidence that the English were smarter 100 years ago than they are today, based on response-test data collected from 1904. Dr Woodley concludes that our genetic potential is falling, perhaps due to the relaxation of Darwinian selection over the last century.

Who's Counting - Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics (TWO of TWO)- ARCHIVE

July 18, 2016, 8:01 p.m.
The film, "Who's Counting" traces Marilyn Waring's quest to explore how the fate of women and of the earth are irrevocably tied up with the deadly pursuit of economic growth. This film was a secret favorite for those who looked for an intelligent explanation of the connection between economics and war. Marilyn Waring was only 22 when she was first elected to the New Zealand Parliament. Re-elected three times she soon became chair of the prestigious Public Expenditures Committee, the sole budget, appropriations, and public accounts committee of Parliament. This segment is about war. Under the GDP accounting system war is the biggest growth industry of all. When John Maynard Keynes and Richard Stone invented the GDP formula during WWII they explicitly designed is as a system of: "how to pay for the war". This British system was imposed on the world in 1953. No country may be a member of the UN, deal with the IMF or World Bank unless they do their national accounting based on the GDP" And some say that unlimited growth along with globalization has driven the wars and environmental destruction of the past 60 plus years. In spite of the magnitude of the problem with Growth and GDP accounting there is an encouraging aspect. If a global system can be designed by two economists, Mr. Keynes and M. Stone, and if it can get imposed - not so long ago - in 1953 - it is possible and necessary to design a different system and set a date for change in the near future.
