US Imposing Junta to Rule Puerto Rico

July 10, 2016, 7:14 a.m.
US Imposing Junta to Rule Puerto Rico with Rafael Bernabe, candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico for the Partido del Pueblo Trabajador (PPT) 2012; professor and director of the Federico de On s Hispanic Studies Center at the University of Puerto Rico at R o Piedras; economist; and who has published three books including Puerto Rico: Crisis y Alternativas Just in time to celebrate the Declaration of Independence by the 13 colonies which came together to form the USA,, Congress passed and Pres Obama signed The Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, or PROMESA, which established an independent control board or Junta de Control Fiscal, as it is locally known. It will be responsible for managing Puerto Ricos spending and debt recovery with sweeping powers to run Puerto Rico s economy. It also imposes a retroactive stay on litigation from the territorys creditors against Puerto Ricos government and includes a provision that could lower Puerto Rico s minimum wage for workers 25 and younger below the current federal minimum of $7.25. The bill was opposed by progressives including Senator Bernie Sanders, who said [W]e are taking away virtually all of the political and democratic rights of the people of Puerto Rico. We are treating them as an absolute colony. While the legislations supporters say it will help the island cope with its debt crisis by allowing an orderly restructuring of its $72 billion debt, critics say it is a reversion to old-style colonialism that removes democratic control from the people of Puerto Rico. They say that this colonial junta is nothing but a glorified collection agency for the hedge funds and the vulture funds and will call for further austerity in an economy reeling from a long term depression instead of ways to fix the broken economy which led to the debt in the first place. In Puerto Rico, students, union members, politicians and environmentalists have launched a series of protests against the bill, including marches and a protest camp outside the U.S. Federal Court in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Plus Bernie Sanders speech against "colonial" Puerto Rico bill PROMESA Sen. Bernie Sanders harshly condemned what he called the "colonial" Puerto Rico bill PROMESA on the Senate floor on June 29

Out of the Woods - Show #327 - 7-16-16

July 8, 2016, 2:05 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

He has been the general editor for Research in Political Economy since 1977, and edited the 2008 volume The Hidden History o 9/11. Despite Aggression and Threats from West and Ethiopia, Eritrea Stands Firm and Serves its People

July 7, 2016, 7:44 p.m.
Thomas Mountain has recently attended a conference of Eritreans in Germany, highlighting the fact that in countries around the world patriotic Eritreans express support for their home country and interact with representatives of the government, much to the chagrin of Washington and Addis Ababa who scheme against the Eritrean state. In June Ethiopia sent troops into Eritrea but they were beaten off. At the UN western powers concocted a “human rights” motion against Eritrea that was so full of holes and drew such ridicule that it failed at the UNSC. Mountain emphasizes that Eritrea, while poor, delivers on the basic needs of its people, while staying out of the clutches of imperialism.
