What is left out of Most Black History Discussions
Feb. 25, 2016, 11:31 a.m.
On the occasion of Black History Month, Norman Richmond of âUhuru Radioâ talks about racism in sports and film, touching on the new film âRaceâ(Jesse Owens in the Berlin Olympics) and âBlack Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolutionâ. Missing from the Panther film is the fact the organization had a socialist program and internationalist outlook.
Norman remembers when more truthful films were made, citing âBlack Jesusâ which starred the great athlete and actor Woody Strode in a story based on Patrice Lumumba.

Sahioune provides an update on the key areas of combat in these days before the Russian-US cease fire agreement goes into effect. He reports on the loss of a fine journalist and friend
who has been killed by the terrorists who lately have begun to hit targets for sheer propaganda purposes to divert attention from their losses. A most important point in Steveâs commentary is that the Kurds fighters near the Turkish crossing zone are Syrians and part of the struggle to preserve the territorial integrity of their country.

Changes In Segregation Since 1952
Feb. 23, 2016, 6:50 p.m.
In May, 1954 the United States Supreme Court unanimously declared, âsegregation in public education is a denial of the equal protection of the laws.â Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, was a leader of many that gave strength and support to the initial struggles for equal civil rights and equal access for all people regardless of skin color. Now 62 years later the concept of affirmative action admission policies for racial equality in public universities continues.
In this 2004 archive edition of Radio Curious we visit with Dr. Elizabeth Allen, now a Professor Emeritus of Nursing at the University of Michigan. As a high school student in 1957, Dr. Allen was one of the first African-American students to integrate the West Virginia high schools. Later she was a Captain in the U.S. Army as Combat Nurse in Viet Nam, prior to obtaining a Masterâs Degree and Ph.D. in nursing and becoming a professor of nursing at the University of Michigan.
This is the first of a two part series recorded in April 2004, in commemoration of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, recorded in late April 2004, Dr. Elizabeth Allen and I began our visit with her description the changes in racial segregation between 1954 and 2004.
Dr. Elizaeth Allen is an avid romance reader and recommends any book written by Linda Howard. She also recommends âThe Price of Loyaltyâ by David Suskind with former US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill.
This interview as originally broadcast in May 2004.
Tim Dickinson: Sunshine State In The Dark
Feb. 23, 2016, 6:03 p.m.
Think about the sunniest states in the U.S. Florida, the place that calls itself "the sunshine state" is sure to come to mind. Indeed, the solar industry considers Florida to be the state with the third greatest rooftop solar potential in the country. So the place must be almost totally off the grid at this point, right? Well, no. Florida boasts only 9,000 homes with solar rooftops, while New York, a state with a similar sized population, and a much less hospitable weather profile, has 25,000. What is going on with Florida? Do people there just really like to pay more for their electricity, or, is it something else? Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Rolling Stone reporter Tim Dickinson, who has just completed an excellent piece of investigative journalism on Florida and the role the Koch brothers play in thwarting the use of the world's most renewable and abundant power source.
Fukushima, Five Years Later - Arnie Gundersen
Feb. 23, 2016, 5:45 p.m.
As of February 2016 Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Associates is on a one month speaking tour of Japan to assess the status of the cleanup. He arrives at a crucial moment. Even though polls show that at least 70% of Japanese do not want the nuclear power plants reopened that were shut down 5 years ago, the Abe government is determined to put many of them back on line and has begun the process. And to make things worse the Japanese government is planning to burn plutonium mixed with uranium in their aging reactors, a practice that has been abandoned in the US due to the high risk.
This program includes a phone report from the ghost towns around Fukushima and an in depth analysis of the collusion between the electric power industry, banks and government in Japan
In 2008 Gundersen's wife Maggie formed the non-profit Fairewinds Energy Education. Their website features videos and pod-casts as well as blog posts on current events, expert witness reports on nuclear safety issues, a book list, media coverage and much more. http://www.fairewinds.org/
As a young man Arnie Gundersen believed in the promise of nuclear power. He was a licensed reactor operator and managed and coordinated projects at 70 nuclear power plants in the US. However he became increasingly more aware of the high risks while at the same time observing serious safety breaches. He spoke out and became a whistle blower. After 20 years as nuclear engineer and executive, Gundersen was fired from his job in 1990.
