From Brexit to Presidential Campaigns: It is Time to Build Progressive Movements
June 28, 2016, 8:04 p.m.
Glen Ford argues we should take heart from the evident crisis of the capitalist elites that has led to the Brexit referendum. The European Union is a cartel that places heavy demands on its members and takes total advantage of less wealthy countries and of former colonies. Britain's leaving should be seen as an opportunity for the socialist movement. In the US Bernie Sanders has attracted a following that he hopes to bring into the Democratic Party, however there are many signs that the new militant forces that grew from Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter are not easily controlled and that now is the time to build new social democratic parties to transform the country.
American Nuremberg - The U.S. Officials Who Should Stand Trial for Post-9/11 War Crimes
June 28, 2016, 7:17 p.m.
To this day the people of the United States have no accounting of what has been done in our names in the so-called war on terror. But we are left with ongoing misery for literally millions of people, destabilized regions in the Middle East, South East Asia, North Africa and blow-back and spill over into Europe. And it is extraordinary how a small group of political leaders could have created such ongoing expanding devastation and has not been held responsible in any way.
Rebecca Gordon writes that for the sake of the victims of the war on terror we need real accountability for American war criminals. Her book, American Nuremberg, published by Hot Books at Skyhorse, NY-City, went into distribution in April 2016.
Rebecca Gordon teaches philosophy at the University of San Francisco. Her prior book: Mainstreaming Torture, was based on her PhD thesis in Ethics and Social Theory from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.
UNIFOR Local Launches Campaign to Save Historic GM plant
June 28, 2016, 6:57 p.m.
Local 222 of UNIFOR is ramping up its public campaign to get a commitment from General Motors to build a new product in Oshawa. The company is refusing to comment, while at the same time making plans to open plants in Mexico and China. GM received $10.8 billion from the Canadian and Ontario governments and was saved in the 2009 bailout, but has not hesitated to reduce the workforce and cut wages and benefits. UNIFOR and the community are determined to have a plant with a new product and a workforce with a secure future.

Rwandan Refugees Should Not Be Transferred to Rwanda.
June 26, 2016, 10:11 p.m.
A Canadian court recently concluded that a Rwandan national, Mr. Seyoboka, who has been accused by the Rwandan government of crimes in the bloody events of 1994, can be removed from Canada to face charges. But David Jacobs, who handled several cases at the International Tribunal for Rwanda, argues that there is ample evidence from multiple sources that the Kagame government in Kigali has no respect for international norms of justice and has a reputation for ruthlessly dealing with all opposition, internal and external. Mr. Seyobokaâs life would be in danger and he would certainly not receive a fair trial.

Proletarian God: Building the Socialist Future Part 4
June 26, 2016, 11:38 a.m.
In part four of Back in the USSR's discussion of my book Proletarian God: Building the Socialist Future, I turn my attention to the construction of a socialist economy. Self-determination for working class people can only be secured through working class control over the means of production, and the abolition of the tyranny of market forces and the profit motive. It means the construction of an economy based on planning and the primacy of human needs. This has been done before, it is being done now, and it can and must be done in the future. Indeed, socialism is the only way to guarantee human survival in the face of the devastation that capitalism has inflicted on this planet.
