Nev Hyman: Shelter From The Storm

Many people living in Pacific nations, like Vanuatu, Indonesia, and the Philippines, struggle to find adequate shelter, a challenge compounded by the elevated risk of structure-destroying cyclones. Meanwhile, miles off their coasts, plastic waste floats in the ocean, contaminating the marine food chain and threatening the world's largest ecosystem. Our guest this week is Nev Hyman, an avid surfer who saw these two seemingly unrelated problems and devised a solution. His company, Nev House, uses recycled plastic to build low-cost, fire- and cyclone-resistant, solar- and water sanitation-equipped houses for people living in developing nations. He tells us about how Nev House partners with charities to actualize their business model, how he feels the emergency shelter system should be streamlined, and how this small company will upcycle 3 million tons of plastic waste over the next four years.

In November of 2015 the Boston University chapter of students for Justice in Palestine held a conference featuring Middle East scholar, author and activist, Mouin Rabbani,and author and professor, Norman Finkelstein who have just authored the above-mentioned book together. Last week we heard Mouin Rabbaniâs presentation where he focused on Palestineâs moving from the suffocation of the Oslo peace process to a strategy of more reliance on the United Nations and the international community in search of support for ending the Israeli occupation. He stressed that any resolution of the conflict will depend on Palestine getting their political house in order, and recognition, secured in International Law, to their right of return to their land and property. Finkelstein's prior books include âMETHOD AND MADNESS: The hidden story of Israelâs assaults on Gazaâ; âOld Wine, Broken Bottleâ; âKnowing Too Muchâ; âWhat Gandhi Saysâ; âThis Time We Went Too Farâ; "The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering"; "Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict"; and "Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History."
Much to the consternation of the Zionist elites, Finkelstein is Jewish. He continues to withstand harsh attacks for his forthright position.
You may be surprised to hear today that he supports the so-called Two-State Solution.
