Acquitted at UN Tribunal, the Rights of Tom Moran's Client Have Not Been Restored

May 24, 2016, 10:30 p.m.
At the so-called “Government Two” at the UN Tribunal for Rwanda Prosper Mugireneza and 3 others were faced every charge from conspiracy to commit genocide to extermination, but with the vigorous defense work of Tom Moran and Cynthia Cline, Mugireneza was acquitted of all charges. In light of the prosecution theory of a government conspiracy to commit genocide, the outcome should cause all commentators to revisit their notions of the 1994 Rwandan events. But another issue is why the rights of Mugireneza and the others have not been restored. They remain in legal limbo in Arusha, Tanzanian, facing an uncertain and perhaps dangerous future.

"Treat Us As Human Beings" - Palestinian Students Speak on the "Right To Education"

May 24, 2016, 10:24 p.m.
The 2016 Right 2 Education campaign just finished a national tour of the U.S. Two college students speak of their experiences trying to gain an education that is relevant and culturally meaningful while under occupation by the Israeli government which controls their curriculum, limits the building of schools, access to classes and frequently fails to protect children from the attacks of religious extremest who terrorize Palestinian communities in a campaign to expand the illegal settler collonies in occupied Palestine. They describe the various means that Israel has used to interfere with their education and the origin of the Right 2 Education Campaign. "The Right to Education Campaign is a grassroots Palestinian movement that seeks to document, research and raise awareness about the issues facing Palestinian students, teachers and academic institutions under Israeli military occupation. Demanding unimpeded access for all Palestinians to their academic institutions, the Right to Education Campaign opposes Israel’s illegal occupation and attacks on Palestinian educational rights. The campaign also seeks to build an international movement in support of Palestinian students, teachers and educational institutions. The campaign is jointly run by four West Bank universities: Birzeit University in Birzeit, Al-Najah National University in Nablus, Hebron University in Hebron and Al Quds University in Abu Dis. These branches of the Campaign both collaborate on major projects and work on issues particular to each university. Currently, the four branches are working to establish roots in other universities both in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The right to education is a basic human right and fundamental to human freedom. The United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that ‘everyone has the right to education’ (Article 26, 1948). The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ratified by Israel in 1991, states that ‘Education is both a human right in itself and an indispensable means of realizing other human rights’. However the Israeli military systematically obstructs education in the West Bank and Gaza, which violates the human rights of individuals and also impedes the development of Palestinian society." Robin McDowell: Exposing Modern Slavery

May 23, 2016, 4:32 p.m.
Human slavery. Many of us think of it as a terrible chapter of US history that ended in the 19th century. But, according to the United Nations, slavery is a modern reality for roughly 27 to 30 million human beings living, right now. Our guest today on Sea Change Radio is Associated Press reporter, Robin McDowell, who, along with three colleagues, recently won a Pulitzer Prize, for her team’s exposé of slavery practices in the Southeast Asian seafood industry. Not only did this investigation receive the highest honor in journalism, it alerted consumers of how we are contributing to the practice by eating slave-produced seafood, and, most importantly, it precipitated the rescue of 2,000 slaves who are now living free after years and even decades of bondage. McDowell breaks down the details of how she and her colleagues uncovered the story, some of the horrors they encountered along the way, and how it sparked action to dismantle similar operations in the region.

Crossing the Void: A call to Nauru

May 23, 2016, 5:40 a.m.
The Australian Government has done its best to silence the voice of refugees who have arrived by boat. They have isolated them on remote islands and tried to rob them of their humanity. Thanks to technology these people are able to break through the barrier and use their voices to cross the void. I spoke to Arash a refugee from Iran. He is living in Nauru in a detention centre. He sleeps in a tent with somewhere between 30 and 40 people. http://autonomousactionradio.com/2016/05/23/crossing-the-void-a-call-to-nauru/

#429 -- Potpourri 4 (Resisting the Oligarchs)

May 22, 2016, 7:50 p.m.
A bit of this, a bit of that--all loosely connected by the theme of how the Powers That Be wield their power in practice. Includes comic satire by The Final Edition, a new song by David Rovics, and thoughts on Trump and the media by KD. The real story about Trump, KD argues, is not his personal failings or his unsound policies. The real story is how the US oligarchs--and their mouthpiece, the media--work to destroy politicians who are not reliable servants of the oligarchy.
