Time to Grow Up about Syria Propaganda

Jan. 28, 2016, 9:21 a.m.
Reporting and social-media posts about the Syrian village of Madaya are designed to elicit an emotional response and build support for military intervention in Syria. Reality on the ground there, and elsewhere in Syria is ignored. Agitation about Madaya is propaganda in its purest form - telling part of the truth in order to obscure a larger picture. Falsehoods were definitely spread about Madaya, and citizens in the West need to start asking questions about the stories and reporting surrounding Madaya and other Syrian villages. That is, if we are serious about breaking the cycle of war propaganda justifying intervention in Iraq, Libya, Syria, and elsewhere.

Parry points out the failure of neocon warmakers to be held to account for Iraq war allows them to continue exerting power through CFR, Brooking, etc. He points out that US led efforts on regime change have destabilized Europe as well as Middle East and North Africa. Traces neocon infuence back to Reagan and their involvement in Iran-Contra and much more.

World Radio Day 2016: Live Coverage of the Napa Earthquake in California

Jan. 26, 2016, 9:41 p.m.
World Radio Day is an international annual celebration of radio, why we love it and why we need it today more than ever. Their February 2016 events are focused on emergency broadcasts. Here is a TUC Radio special documentary for the occasion. This is part of the story of a community that has built their station in response to a devastating fire in their own signal area at the Point Reyes Peninsula - determined to be ready for the next emergency. KWMR in Point Reyes Station has been on the air since 1995 with a rich offering of music and public affairs. But - more than most other community radio stations they have built infrastructure, trained staff and volunteers specifically to respond to emergencies. They coordinate with all the local emergency services to be able to help in times of need. At 3:20 am on a Sunday morning in August 2014 a 6.0 earthquake hit Napa County, less than an hour north of San Francisco. At least 15,000 residents lost power and most of them also lost the use of cell phones and internet. With many cell phones now reduced to an expensive flashlight people located their radio - and heard only pre-programmed music from all commercial stations - with one exception, KWMR, a small, non-commercial, community radio station far away from the epicenter. You will hear some of the call-ins to the station that were recorded that night and an interview with the station engineer Richard Dillman. Alert for radio stations: This is an inspiring model and blueprint for any radio station considering building an emergency response system in their signal area.

Jan. 26, 2016, 5:20 p.m.
When we try to visualize the Arctic, we usually think of ice as far as the eye can see. But, unfortunately, that's changing. This week's guest on Sea Change Radio, author Roy Scranton, gives us a first-hand glimpse into the rapidly melting polar cap up North. Scranton, who recently took a cruise through Greenland and Northern Canada for a piece published in The Nation magazine, presents us with the many challenges we face as this vast region undergoes vast transformation. Then, host Alex Wise and Scranton discuss Scranton's book, Learning How To Die In The Anthropocene, and how his time as a U.S. soldier in the Iraq War gave him a unique perspective on climate change and environmentalism.
